About us

Who we are

The Chiltern Society, established over 50 years ago, has 7,000 members and 500 volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and improve the Chilterns for the benefit of everyone. Over the last half century, it has contributed some 500,000 hours of volunteering effort, managed and improved nature reserves and heritage sites, created long distance footpaths and cycleways, including the Chiltern Way, reviewed many hundreds of planning applications and maintained over 2,000 miles of footpaths and bridleways.

The Charity has been through sustained growth having taken over the running of nine conservation sites to add to its existing three; produced walking guides; provided increased effort to protect our footpaths and bridleways; re-engaged in promoting the heritage of the Chilterns; increased its activity and voice concerning several serious threats to the Green Belt across the Chilterns; offered an extensive programme of walks, cycle rides and events. We have engaged additional staff to accelerate our conservation and development programmes and have plans to grow our membership especially its diversity and geography and to be more innovative in our thinking. We aim to be the ‘voice ‘of all those passionate about the Chilterns and our countryside.

The Charity is managed by an Executive Council made up of Trustees and following resignations we are now looking to recruit further Trustees. The role holder will report to the Chair of the Trustees.
