Who we are
The Friendly Almshouses is a registered charity based in Brixton, SW9. Founded as the ‘Friendly Female Society’ in 1802, it has provided for women in housing need for nearly 200 years. In 2015 we became a Company limited by guarantee.
This is a very exciting and challenging time for the Charity, as we are about to embark on a redevelopment programme that has been planned for some years. Once completed, the accommodation we provide will meet modern standards and expectations. Currently, we have seventeen residents ranging in age from their mid-fifties to 104. When the new building is completed in 2019 we shall have accommodation for up to forty women. Our residents live in a sheltered community that is supported by the Clerk to the Trustees, a resident warden, and her non-resident deputy.
