About us

Who we are

Exeter is one of the UK's most popular and successful universities with campuses in Exeter, Devon, and near Falmouth in Cornwall. Undeniably, Devon and Cornwall are great places to live: that's why the world comes here on holiday. But forget notions of Westcountry sleepiness: the University is an academic powerhouse ranked among the top 70 fastest growing organisations in Europe and the top 25 in the UK.

The University of Exeter's status as a top 10 university has been confirmed by its ranking in The Sunday Times University Guide. The University of Exeter now ranks 7th in this league table and is also ranked 10th in The Times and 12th in The Guardian. Added to this, Exeter is ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education international rankings.

Despite the current economic pressures on higher education, the University is continuing to expand its staff and facilities. The University has recently completed a capital investment programme worth more than £350 million.

This includes new facilities for Business, Biosciences and Psychology alongside 2,500 new student rooms and a £48 million redevelopment of the heart of the Streatham Campus called the Forum. This gives the University new space for teaching, retail and student services plus an expanded library.

The University traces its origins to the middle of the 19th Century and went through several stages of development before achieving full university status in 1955 when it had just 1,000 students. Exeter now has over 18,500 students, including more than 4,300 postgraduates. There are 4,000 members of staff, employed in six Colleges over three campuses.

Internationalisation of the University's activities is an increasingly important goal: this year international student numbers rose to 4,000 from over 130 countries, on the back of large increases in applications. The University is also forging new partnerships with universities around the world, including China, Taiwan and India.

Exeter offers an exceptionally wide range of opportunities for its students to develop through both academic and management training, one of the UK's largest student volunteering programmes, pre-teacher training and study abroad opportunities. Sport is another strength of the University with a range of excellent new facilities available for use by both staff and students.
