SPANA’s goal is to improve the welfare of the world’s working animals through transformative approaches that strengthen global systems of support and provide capacity building and policy change as well as training, teaching, and treatment. SPANA celebrated its centenary and launched an ambitious new five-year strategy in 2023.
The world is becoming riskier because of environmental degradation and climate change, increasingly contracted and complex emergencies, and increasing inequality, insecurity, and endemic poverty. However, methods exist to reduce risks and build resilience for the communities with whom SPANA works.
Increasingly, working animals and their communities need strategic support to be resilient in the face of increasingly complex, cyclical, and impactful crises whilst also reducing and mitigating against everyday risks. SPANA’s work aims to reduce risk, build resilience, and respond to emergencies, operating at both the development and humanitarian nexus and the One Health nexus. As such, SPANA aims to increasingly embed resilience approaches into its programmes, ensuring both continuity in the face of regular challenges, and enhancing preparedness ahead of both rapid and slow onset emergencies. When emergencies strike, SPANA also helps working animals with immediate response and recovery activities.
The Disaster, Risk, and Resilience (DRR) and Emergencies Programme Manager will work within our Global Programmes department to develop a comprehensive DRR strategy to guide all our work and will also manage our emergencies programme.

- Leveraging the One Health principles, help SPANA develop strategic partnerships with humanitarian actors to advance:

- Reports to: Programme Head: Just Energy Transition and Natural Resources
- Salary: GBP 37,500-40,000, commensurate with experience and adjusted according to location (the range is aligned to London cost of living; if based in another location, the range will be adjusted down accordingly)

- Contract type: Full time (35 hours/week), 1-year (with possibility of extension)
- Annual leave: 24 days/year
- Start: As soon as possible
About the organization
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre works with diverse allies and partners to put human rights at the core of companies’ business models and end abuse; to support communities and workers in securing their rights and accountability for corporate abuse; and to encourage governments to create the right regulation and incentives to uphold human rights in business. We are a global organization rooted in five continental regions, comprised of a Global Team of 80. Global Team members work with a rich network of human rights advocates in ten languages, and place strong emphasis on our alliances with grassroots organisations facing often profound inequalities of power in protecting their rights. The efforts inform our ability to influence responsible business, investors, and governments for transformative change.
Our work covers the full gamut of human rights in business, with particular focus on three thematic programmes: just energy transition and natural resources; accountable digital technologies; and workers’ rights in global supply chains. These are strengthened by three cross cutting themes: civic freedoms and human rights defenders; corporate legal accountability; and racial and gender justice.
About the position
The Just Energy Transition and Natural Resources programme is focused on advancing human rights in business, in support toa fast and fair transition to clean energy and zero carbon economies. We seek to promote human rights across the renewable energy and batteries value chain. We are focused on mining for transition minerals, the installation of renewable energy where the fast transition is increasingly endangered by companies’ poor human rights record and policies, the lack of investor due diligence, and the absence of adequate regulation. A just transition will be one that, at minimum, ensures respect for human rights, fair negotiations, and shared prosperity with workers and communities.
The successful candidate will help lead strategic research and analysis on the renewable energy value chain from a corporate accountability perspective. This will include generating new insights and propositions for a more just energy transition through the analysis of structural causes of corporate abuse in these supply chains. In particular, the researcher will help us deepen our efforts to embed human rights, and protect and amplify the voices of human rights defenders, as an essential part of the response to the climate crisis, and a core component of the global work towards a just transition. As the Resource Centre expands its advocacy on improving the human rights policies and practices of companies in the renewable energy value chain, the senior researcher will play a key role in supporting:
- Research on community engagement, community equity models and other forms of benefit-sharing – focusing in particular on (i) unpacking cases and recommendations for ‘meaningful engagement’ with communities in the context of transition minerals mining projects, (ii) examples of Indigenous co-ownership and ownership of renewable energy and mining projects;
- Regional teams in their work on local just transitions and evidence of corporate abuses in the context of the current boom of exploration, licensing of transition minerals mining projects;
- Advocacy towards and engagement with investors and their coalitions on our just energy transition messaging and core products - Transition Minerals Tracker, Renewable Energy Benchmark, and investor guidance;
- Development of policy recommendations on the just energy transition from a business & human rights perspective; and
- Representation of the programme in key civil society fora and coalitions.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include:
- Conduct and help manage in-depth research: design and help lead team in delivering high impact research and analyses that assess company abuses, policy, and practice in renewable energy and transition mineral mining sectors, particularly through the team’s core products including the Transition Mineral Tracker, Renewable Energy and Human Rights Benchmark, and resources and guidance for investors. Lead on research and writing of a briefing focused on examples and lessons learnt around engagement with communities in the mining sector. Play a leadership role in identifying opportunities and advancing the Resource Centre’s research beyond its current core products along the renewable energy value chain, including research on transition minerals and value chains, for the theme.
- Develop high quality written and digital materials: Curate and write compelling content for our website and outreach, including reports, blog posts, briefing notes and papers, and articles to be submitted to relevant media outlets.
- Conduct outreach with companies: take up allegations of abuse with company HQs to seek responses to allegations of human rights abuse, conduct follow-up outreach for remedy and build relationships to enhance human rights due diligence;
- Strategically engage with investors and their coalitions on the salient risks of the sector and coordinate workshops, roundtables, and knowledge sharing spaces, bringing together various stakeholders. Sustain and help build our active network of CSO partners and allies.
- Coordinate with BHRRC regional programmes: Work with regional researchers and our global network of external partners to identify cases of impacts of companies on human rights – with a focus on transition minerals, in order to strengthen our research process, and to strategically identify allegations of abuse for deeper-dive investigations and coordinated advocacy globally.
- Track policy and legislation: Keep abreast of, and in some cases participate in, relevant legal and policy developments, including, e.g., legislation regarding mandatory human rights due diligence, critical minerals, and promotion of renewable energy.
- People management and team support: In coordination with the Head of Programme, closely work with and support a team comprised of a researcher and a research assistant, share administrative tasks, and assist with the management and training of staff members where appropriate. <span data-ccp-charstyle="normaltextrun" style="-webkit-user-drag: none;-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; user-select: text;background-image:var(--urlContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2, url(" data:image="" svg+xml;base64,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"='));" border-bottom:transparent;background-position-x:0%;background-position-y:100%'="">Possibility of line managing at least one person.

About Reprieve
Reprieve is a UK charity founded in 1999. Reprieve uses strategic interventions to end the use of the death penalty globally, and to end extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”.
Reprieve works with the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. Thus, Reprieve promotes and protects the rights of those facing the death penalty and those who are the victims of extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”, with a focus on arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial executions.
Reprieve’s main office is in London, UK. Reprieve also supports full-time Fellows, who work as lawyers, investigators and campaigners in the countries in which we work. We work closely with a number of partner organisations in jurisdictions all over the world, who provide access to clients, expertise, knowledge and guidance on specific issues or regions. We work in cooperation with relevant government officials, individual lawyers and human rights defenders, as well as individual, corporate and foundation funders to further the cause of our shared goals.
About this role
The MENA Death Penalty Caseworker will undertake a range of activities in support of Reprieve’s work on cases of individuals on death row or at risk of the death penalty across the MENA region, including casework and investigations into individual cases and the broader death penalty landscape, support to Reprieve clients, and support to partner organisations and lawyers in the MENA region and beyond.
The MENA Death Penalty Caseworker is an integral member of the MENA Team, and will work closely with the Media, Campaigns and Digital, and UK and US Policy teams, and the Directors and Deputy Directors.
Location and salary
This role is a full-time, permanent contract based in our London office. The annual salary is £40,964 full-time per annum, less any required deductions for income tax and national insurance.
Reprieve operates a hybrid working model and we require staff to work a minimum of 40% per week from the London office, and the rest from home. Your presence is important during core office hours, whether remotely or in the office.
Applicants must have the current right to work in the UK.

Are you excited to roll up your sleeves and be part of the growth and evolution of a dynamic anti-poverty charity? Are you adept at building relationships and an outstanding communicator? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
As our Fundraising Officer, you will have the exciting opportunity to make a huge difference in improving the lives of people living in hygiene poverty. If you fit this profile and want to use your talents to improve the lives of people across the UK and are interested in remote working opportunities in a flexible organisation with a values-led ethos, we would love to hear from you!
About The Hygiene Bank
Hygiene poverty is not being able to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted. The reality of low income is that it restricts people’s options, leaving us caught between being able to heat our homes, pay the rent, eat, or be clean. It is washing hair, bodies, faces and clothes in the same cheap washing up liquid used for the dishes. It is not being able to replace a toothbrush when needed or sharing a toothbrush because one each just isn't an option. It is having to choose between shaving foam and razors or the transport fare to a job interview.
Hygiene Poverty is the hidden crisis facing the UK. In 2022, The Hygiene Bank published groundbreaking research into the incidence and impact of hygiene poverty. It found that over 3.1 million adults across the country are currently experiencing hygiene poverty and that it is both alarmingly widespread, increasing and disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable. It stops people from participating in society, feeds the mental health crisis and blocks routes out of poverty. It is simply unjust.
At The Hygiene Bank, we believe that everyone deserves to feel clean. That is why our network of projects exists – to give people access to the basics they need.

Job Title: Programmes Officer – based in Liberia & Sierra Leone
Reporting to: Head of Programmes – Sierra Leone & Liberia
Contract Type: Full time (37.5 hours per week)
Principal Location: Monrovia, Liberia with frequent travel across Sierra Leone
Updated: Febuary 2024
Our Organisation:
Street Child believes that every child deserves the chance to go to school and learn. Our projects focus on a combination of education, child protection and livelihood support to address the social, economic and structural issues that underpin today’s education crisis. We partner with local organisations and communities to deliver our locally rooted programmes, using evidence to drive learning and the refinement and scale up of programmes to create maximum impact for the most children at the lowest cost. We pride ourselves on being willing to go to the world’s toughest places where others won’t, including remote, hard-to-reach areas and fragile, disaster-affected states across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Since 2008 we have helped over 1,000,000 children to go to school and learn.
Part 1: Role Purpose:
We are seeking an outstanding Programmes Officer for an exciting opportunity to support Street Child’s programme portfolio in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This role will cut across Street Child’s programming in the region, including a specific focus on the $12.8m Education for Every Child Today (EFECT) Project which aims to enrol 96,000 out of school children in school across West Africa over a 4-year period.
The key objectives of this role are to work closely with Street Child’s federal partners to support the effective implementation of adaptive programming, and to support accurate and timely donor reporting across a range of institutional, trust & foundations, and corporate donors. The ideal candidate will have strong written and excel skills, with experience of MEAL and financial management processes. The role will engage regular, detailed interaction with Street Child’s UK and European fundraising community.
The role holder will work in close collaboration with Street Child’s regional Head of Programmes, based in Freetown, as well as partner Programmes, MEAL and Finance teams to coordinate timely and quality implementation and reporting across the programmes portfolio.
Based in Monrovia, whilst serving a regional brief, the role-holder will be expected to be especially involved in supporting the programmes, and wider life, of Street Child of Liberia. This aspect of the role in particular demands a confident, ‘self-sufficient’ and motivated personality – who is excited by the opportunity and attendant career potential, as opposed to being overawed by the inevitable, multi-dimensional challenges.

- Lead on the consolidation of narrative reporting (low-mid value donors) for a variety of donors within the portfolio.

Programme & MEAL Management – 35%
- Work in collaboration with national partner and cross-country implementation teams across Liberia and Sierra Leone to ensure quality and timely implementation of project activities.
- Work alongside social, enterprise and education teams across both countries to support a joined-up approach to project implementation and MEAL, ensuring relevant data are collected with due care and utilised for project planning, reporting and learning.
- Provide strong support to EFECT programme staff and partners in Liberia & Sierra Leone in programme and MEAL department.
- Alongside colleagues provide training, guidance and advice to partner delivery staff to ensure effective and accurate use of programme documents and tools.
- In liaison with Safeguarding Focal Points monitor safeguarding policies ensuring adequate implementation of policies and procedures, and support to close feedback loops with partners & project participants.
- Provide capacity strengthening to Street Child Colleagues where possible.

- Support on the collation of financial reporting requirements for low-mid value donors.

Dear Applicant,
Launched in 2004, Crisis Action is a pioneering organisation that works behind the scenes to enable civil society to respond more effectively to violent conflict. Crisis Action’s unique model and record of impact earned the organisation the 2012 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions and the 2013 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship.
We work through innovative campaigns that shift power towards populations at risk and spur collaborations to ensure the safety and rights of affected people in line with international human rights and humanitarian law. We strive to empower those we work with and provide platforms to those with direct experience of conflicts to tell their stories and speak truth to power. You can watch this video for an insight into our model and find out more about our work from our recent annual reports.
We are international, independent, and not-for-profit, with a diverse global team of about 50 people strategically located in Addis Ababa, Beirut, Johannesburg, London, Nairobi, New York, Paris, and Washington DC. Crisis Action’s Board is composed of respected leaders and sector experts from across the humanitarian, human rights, policy, and business spheres.
We are looking for an exceptional, strategic, and dynamic Communications Director to help drive forward and enhance the impact and effectiveness of our work.
If you’re hungry for a challenge, are creative and passionate about driving change, and experienced in influencing the world’s most powerful people to uphold rights and protect civilian lives, we look forward to receiving your application.
Nicola Reindorp
Chief Executive Officer
Overview of the Role
As Communications Director, you will play a pivotal role in advancing Crisis Action’s unique model of campaigning by driving maximum innovation and impact in our campaigns; communicating Crisis Action’s story in new and compelling ways to our diverse network of partners and donors; and by building allies and creative coalitions globally. We are looking for an exceptional changemaker who is an all-in-one storyteller, strategic communicator, newshound, and mentor, with the ability to ensure maximum innovation and impact in our campaigns and communications for the protection of civilians from conflict.
This is not a typical Communications Director role. We do not want our profile raised: in fact, while keeping us entirely behind the scenes, you will help our campaign teams and partners develop and deliver ever-more creative, strategic, and digitally aware campaigns that can achieve cut-through in a dramatically changing geopolitical landscape.
Our new Communications Director will be a seasoned communications professional with a strong understanding of the media landscape, but also an experienced changemaker with the soul and energy of an activist. You understand how change occurs and have a demonstrable passion and track record for making it happen. You seek and drive excellence but are also unafraid to embrace experimentation and failure. Your knowledge and experience of using a broad range of approaches for influencing decision makers, strong news sense, political instincts, and knowledge of different media markets, including – ideally – established relationships in key outlets and platforms - will be critical in shaping our work and fulfilling our mission to protect civilians affected by conflict.
Reporting to Crisis Action’s Director for Emergency Response, Learning and Innovation, you will lead and support our small but powerful Communications team. While this is a senior, strategic role, this position also requires hands-on implementation. You will have the ability to deliver work through your own team, as well as a complex ecosystem of colleagues, partners, and allies from all over the globe, including many of the world’s largest and most high-profile humanitarian and human rights groups. Therefore, the ability to work with and motivate others across teams, organisations, and time zones will be crucial.
We are looking for an outcome-focused individual who enjoys working in small, flexible teams, leading with rigour, initiative, and a high degree of professionalism. You will be comfortable in a fast-paced but fun and highly supportive environment that is laser-focused on impact. You will need to hit the ground running and be ready to engage with your new colleagues and partners to harness their resources and ambition to deliver effective campaigns.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Develop and implement innovative and impactful campaigns to protect civilians and prevent conflict
A core part of your responsibilities will be working with the Communications team and colleagues from our other offices to lead, strategize, or contribute to the global campaigns that Crisis Action coordinates. You will measure success, capture learnings, mentor colleagues through training, and communicate our behind-the-scenes work to various stakeholders in a way that enhances Crisis Action’s reputation with partners and donors. This will require you to:
-
Ensure timely and impactful communications to key stakeholders such as partners, donors, and board members, including overseeing the coordination, drafting, and editing of the content
-
Working in close collaboration with the fundraising team, coordinate and oversee the vision, design, production, and dissemination of Crisis Action’s annual report
-
Enhance our ways of storytelling to diverse audiences by developing bespoke content on Crisis Action and its campaigns, and training our teams on it
-
Maintain oversight of Crisis Action’s website to ensure it is fit for purpose and updated with the latest campaign and organisational information at all times
3. Contribute to the strategic growth, leadership, and impact of Crisis Action
You will be responsible for consolidating and expanding Crisis Action’s relationships and reputation with our communications and media partners, and civil society network, and for developing and implementing the Communications strategy that aligns with Crisis Action’s overall organisational strategy. As a member of Crisis Action’s Directors Group, you will also play a leadership role on organisational strategy and decision-making, oversight of team performance and well-being. This will require you to:
-
Supervise and mentor the communications team, and any consultants or volunteers that may work with the team or on Crisis Action campaigns
