JUSTICE is looking for an outstanding criminal lawyer, for a full-time fixed term 12-month contract, with the possibility of renewal, subject to funding. This provides an exciting opportunity for a practising lawyer with a strong research background or academic lawyers keen to engage in high-level policy and law reform work.

We are looking for a lawyer mainly interested in criminal justice, as well as in cross-cutting issues affecting the functioning of the justice system (current cross-cutting projects include work on the state of the rule of law in the UK and AI, human rights, and the law).
 

JUSTICE is at the forefront of work promoting access to a fair criminal justice system for all. The successful candidate will be building on our recent work on racial injustice in the youth criminal justice system and post-conviction decision making, including the parole system and administrative decision-making in prisons, as well as our cross-cutting workstream on the state of the rule of law in the UK. They will also be scoping and setting up a new criminal justice project relating to fraud.

We would like to recruit a bright, motivated person who is passionate about criminal justice system reform, and the promotion of access to justice and fair trial. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team. With excellent interpersonal skills, they will be able to work closely with JUSTICE members, who include senior figures in the legal profession. The post holder will work with our Interim Legal Director to further develop our criminal justice work stream and assist on system-wide proposals for change. This role is focused primarily on England and Wales, though it will touch on UK wide issues and the Scottish criminal justice system from time-to-time.

The JUSTICE team are currently working in a hybrid manner. Staff members have access to office space in London, however, attendance is currently optional. Our staff enjoy flexible working conditions, 27 days annual leave, plus the week between Christmas and the New Year, 8% employer pension contribution and access to an Employee Assistance Programme.

About the opportunity

Fundraising is critical to delivering our mission and ensuring we can support as many children and young people facing disadvantage to open doors to their future.  The Philanthropy Team as a whole has a combined target income for the current year (2023-24) of £1.83 million (growing to £2.35m as our target for next year), of which approximately £850k is from corporate donors and their foundations, £100k is from individuals, and the remaining from trusts and foundations. Internews seeks an experienced Project Director for a four-year European Commission (EC)-funded project to advance the global response to increasing the resilience of at-risk independent media. The Project Director will lead and manage a consortium of four international NGO and academic implementing partners, overseeing and coordinating the design and implementation of a diverse portfolio of activities in multiple countries worldwide, as well as project monitoring and evaluation and a robust learning agenda. Strong skills in project financial management and communications are required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Lead the Inception Phase of the project, working closely with consortium members, the EC, and other awardees to finalize target country selection, select research initiatives, draft the project workplan and monitoring and evaluation plan, and determine country-based activities.

· Maintain a thorough knowledge of key issues affecting independent media (print, broadcast, digital), and a general understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing independent media globally;

· Ensure the project is in compliance with all grant and cooperative agreement rules, requirements and regulations as well as with Internews internal policies and procedures;

· Serve as the primary budget authority over the project, responsible for ensuring all costs charged to the project are allowable, reasonable and correctly allocated;

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage and oversee all project staff.Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

· At least 10 years of experience in media and program development, including senior-level management of personnel and financial administration;

· Donor grant management experience with EU funding and wider donor experience is essential;

· Professional experience in the media sector is an asset; experience managing assistance programs supporting media and/or civil society required.

· Experience as a manager or trainer with professional capacity-building programs for journalists and media outlets an asset.

· Demonstrated knowledge and experience in some or all of the following areas:traditional, digital, and social media; media and internet law and policy; information disorders/ disinformation; and/or sustainability models for media;

· Excellent soft skills, including diplomacy, interpersonal and communication skills, with a problem-solving attitude and as a self-starter who works both independently and as a collaborative team player;

· Willingness to travel regularly to London and Brussels, as well as target country visits;

· Additional language skills are a plus;

· University degree or equivalent experience.

If you are, we are seeking a Trusts & Foundations Officer to be an integral part of the Trusts and Foundations team where you will be responsible for submitting applications to Trusts & Foundations for our services in the UK.

You will be working to deliver our ambitious targets for trust and foundations income for 2024/25 and beyond. The post-holder will help to research and explore new avenues for funding and build a strong pipeline of new donors who have the potential to support the charity. You will be building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders at trusts and foundations and preparing and delivering targeted funding applications to those organisations. You will be able to build upon and develop a compelling case for support for both the services we offer as a whole and for specific projects that reflect our work and values.

Ideally you will be looking to develop your skills with the aim of moving into a management role within the department within the next 2 – 3 years, so this role is to be viewed as a development opportunity.

The purpose of this role is to engage, cultivate and secure support from major gifts, grants, legacies and partnerships across Essex and Hertfordshire which will help shape, deliver and protect our vital life-changing service for the future. In particular it will focus on enabling the vision of EHAAT’s innovative Centre for Excellence.

This is an exciting time at EHAAT. Over the past two years, a strategy has been devised and initiated to develop major giving as a new stream of funding for the charity. As we enter the next phase of the strategy, this role presents a unique opportunity to build on the initial success of this programme and shape its future, alongside a committed and growing Development Board and a dedicated team, and with the support of the trustees and executive team. At the same time, we are bringing together for the first time other important areas of our fundraising, including legacies, trusts and foundations, and corporate partnership under the leadership of the Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships to build a strong and focused team delivering across philanthropic giving for the charity.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working with senior level prospects and givers in a charitable context, as well as experience across other areas including legacies, trusts and foundations and corporate fundraising. A genuine team player, they will demonstrate strategic thinking, creativity and leadership, to inspire and motivate key individuals and to build strong, long-lasting relationships with the charity. In addition, they will have management experience to unite, develop and lead the team to achieve challenging targets and deliver long term philanthropic goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the strategy to build philanthropic giving at EHAAT in consultation with the CEO, Executive Team, Trustees and Development Board, to support the charity’s objectives and long term aims.
• Deliver a fundraising plan across the Philanthropy & Partnerships team, including major giving, legacies, trusts and foundations and corporate partnerships, to achieve agreed strategic objectives.
• Provide excellent executive support and guidance to the Development Board and the Chair, and take a leading role in building the Board further by identifying and recruiting to its membership and the wider pool of Ambassadors.
• Ensure philanthropic giving to the charity is strengthened through in-depth research, compelling proposals, wellcrafted approaches for gifts and excellent stewardship.
• Deliver regular activity and income reports and participate in the budgeting and forecasting of income in this area.
• Lead and support the Philanthropy & Partnerships team, enabling team members to fulfil their potential and meet agreed objectives through collaborative and shared working.
• Work across the charity to collaboratively create exciting and impactful propositions for funding, impact reports, and stewardship opportunities, in particular relating to the Centre for Excellence.
• Implement and regularly review an effective gift policy and undertake all necessary due diligence prior to accepting gifts, ensuring donations and grants are correctly allocated and used, and conditions met.
• Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of EHAAT's current work and future strategic plans.
• Identify potential relationships and opportunities across the fundraising team, recognising where there is overlap.
• Act as a source of expertise in major gift fundraising for the charity, advising trustees, development board and executive team on managing key philanthropic relationships and partnerships.

All parts of the Church will need to raise funds to implement this net zero plan. In 2024 and 2025, the Church of England is testing and piloting a range of approaches to help churches fundraise for projects. Our feasibility study identified that statutory sources of funding, currently under-accessed will be a new area of opportunity for churches, schools and housing to access.

The Giving Directorate is leading on the strategy to coordinate and support the plans being developed by our dioceses, churches, cathedrals, schools, and departments. In addition, The Giving Directorate and NetZero Programme Team will be engaging with funders at a national level to secure investment for projects.

Job Summary:

As Net Zero Carbon Statutory Fundraising Coordinator, you will work in The Giving Directorate and operate across the whole Church with a focus on supporting parishes and dioceses to access statutory funds. You will share your knowledge and insight to support with identifying, researching and applying to funding from a range of government sources. You will develop and maintain resources, guidance and training and help share best practice across the country, as well as working with regional fundraisers. With a range of projects and fundraising initiatives, the post holder will work collaboratively within The Giving Directorate and with the Net Zero Programme Team, with diocesan colleagues and with church volunteers.

The role:

Main responsibilities

• Develop a national plan to secure statutory funding at parish and diocesan level
• Acting as a central point of coordination between the schools, housing and parish fundraising workstreams to oversee statutory funding
• Working specifically with the Regional Fundraising Officer in the north west cluster of dioceses to identify and support applications to statutory funding sources by parishes
• Working with Net Zero Implementation Manager to support statutory funding applications for clergy housing
• Building capacity in dioceses to support senior staff (incl. Bishops) to use their networks to identify relevant statutory funding opportunities (e.g. mayors, local council leadership, police and crime commissioners etc)
• Supporting dioceses to think creatively about packaging projects up a) between parishes, b) between parishes, schools and clergy housing, c) across deaneries.
• Leading consortia of dioceses to apply for funding if available and supporting applications
• Building a hub of best practice and shared learning which will include designing and delivering training to staff and volunteers at all levels
• Sharing statutory funding opportunities across the Church of England, Net Zero Carbon, Giving, and Fundraising networks and with Cathedrals

The ideal candidate:

To be successful, you will need experience of securing statutory funding for projects and of other aspects of fundraising. You will need to be a very strong self-motivator and initiator as the job requires an ability to work across a wide geographical area on a diverse range of projects. Experience managing projects would also be useful. You will be an excellent trainer and communicator.

Due to the specialist nature of the roles within The Giving Directorate, training will be provided to successful candidates to enable them to carry out their role confidently.
