Role Summary

This position provides key support for the policy and research functions of the charity, in addition to collaborating on campaigns and public affairs work. You will be responsible for carrying out primary research relevant to the charity’s policy and research functions. You’ll be monitoring and collating new policy and research materials and contributing to public communications including report-writing, blog posts and social media activity. You’ll be providing input into strategic planning regarding policy and research activities. You’ll connect with researchers and policy people from other charities and from universities. Finally, you’ll be attending conferences and meetings on behalf of the charity.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Policy

• Support the P&RM, DR&PA and CEO in responding to public consultations, advising policymakers and working with national policy and research bodies as appropriate.

• Represent the charity in meetings with policy partners where appropriate.

• Attend policy and research conferences on behalf of the charity, providing feedback to the team on key learning and opportunities that arise.

• Work with the SC&PA and DR&PA to draw up influencing strategies to target key stakeholders on policy priorities.

• Monitor external research that helps our policy work and opportunities for collaboration.

• Work with the SC&PA  to engage campaigners in our policy work.

Research

• Work with the P&RM to carry out research activities relevant to the policy and research functions of the charity; including collating and analysing data, and co-authoring reports for both internal and public purposes.

• Work with the P&RM and the Communications and Marketing teams to produce engaging and accessible communication of research findings for a range of audiences. 

• Monitor and collate new policy and research materials, including research reports, policy documents and media activity. Work with the P&RM to produce internal reports where appropriate and to ensure the charity’s activities reflect and respond to the wider policy and research environment.

• Work with the P&RM on external research projects funded by the charity, including support with assessing the quality of bids by external researchers. 

Across both areas

• Produce social media communications where relevant to policy and research. Work with colleagues across the Research and Public Affairs and Communications and Marketing teams to develop strategies for maximising impact, especially in digital communications.

• Contribute to strategic planning by contributing to staff meetings, producing supporting materials and providing feedback on public affairs.

The postholder will also be expected to:

• attend training courses and develop skills as required, sharing learning with other staff as relevant

• in unusual circumstances, work weekend and / or evening hours, for which time in lieu will be given

• undertake other reasonable work as requested by the P&RM.

What’s the job?

We need someone with high quality research and data analysis skills to join us as our Research and Evidence Manager. You will work with us to plan, design and deliver projects with cross-sector stakeholders, as well as developing reports and other ways to share our findings with members and the wider sector. We need someone who has solid research skills, is a natural collaborator, and can collate and present research in different ways to help us achieve the change that’s needed for Londoners.

This role is crucial in ensuring that we deliver on our ambition to drive a learning culture, where shared data, intelligence and insight leads to better decision-making. This role is initially fixed term for one year, and may be subject to renewal. It reflects our growing commitment to ensuring our work is relevant and responsive to the diverse needs of our members and communities. As this is a newly developed post, we are also looking for someone who can work flexibly and bring ideas to help shape the role, so that it has a lasting impact on the way London Funders works.

So, what sort of work will you be doing? We’ve just committed to a really exciting and crucial piece of research taking place over the next year, where we will work with funders and equity partners to map the current state of funding for equity and justice infrastructure. This will initially focus on London, before we take the approach to cover England and Wales. The work will be used to inform discussions with funders on the strategic development of funding approaches in this critical space. You’ll be leading on the research and developing the workplan in a collaborative approach with our partners.

Alongside this project, your work will explore other aspects of the funding landscape in London and gather insights from across our membership. You’ll work on reports to support our range of thematic networks, and generate new evidence to help inform the work of funders and our partners across sectors. We’re looking for someone who thrives working as part of a small team, as well as working independently, who will suggest solutions to challenges and use their initiative. Someone who wants to help build a better London by taking action on what matters to our city and our communities.

Who are we looking for?

Our ideal candidate would be someone who has experience of running multiple research projects at once with strong project management skills, and direct experience designing and leading both qualitative and quantitative projects. You’ll also need to be able to work with different stakeholders to both co-design research approaches as well as facilitate their engagement in helping us learn from and make sense of the findings.  As such you will need a track record of building relationships in a range of contexts and producing and communicating research outputs in a range of different and accessible formats, including presenting to external audiences.

Whilst we are a small team, we share an office with our friends at Trust for London. There is flexibility about the hours for this role, so it would be available on a part-time or full-time basis (with a minimum of 24 hours per week, or 0.75 FTE). The skills, experience, insights and inspiration you will bring to the role are more important to us, so we'll do what we can to accommodate your preferred working pattern.

The salary is £36,400 per year (or pro rata if you choose part-time) and is a fixed term contract for one year, with the possibility of becoming permanent. Research is a key element in Dementia UK’s strategic aims and runs throughout all our approaches to supporting people with dementia and their families. Our research is focused on care not cure, helping to improve lives and support our Admiral Nurses.

As part of the Research and Publications Team, we are currently seeking a Research Team Administrator to support in the delivery of the Dementia UK Research Strategy.

The team administrator will play a crucial role in providing administrative support to the Research and Publications (R&P) team, aiding in their operational efficiency, research, and development activities. Your responsibilities will include maintaining the research and publications databases, as well as updating and managing the R&P webpages. Furthermore, you will be responsible for managing the team inbox, handling inquiries, and assisting in the management of the team budget. Additionally, you will provide support to team members with their travel arrangements and serve as a liaison between internal and external stakeholders as needed.

The ideal candidate will have previously worked in an administrative role with experience of preparing and drafting meeting papers, taking minutes, and coordinating meetings. Role Description

The Head of Research and Programmes is a new role, leading and overseeing the delivery of our grant-making activity across eye research and social change: delivering first class grant programmes that respond to need as our organisation scales up. The role will lead on key strategic projects and relationships that will increase the Impact of our funding and the value we add to the sectors we work in.  This role will also develop and own an appropriate impact framework to ensure we're able to amplify the work we fund and demonstrate the value of our approach to funders and supporters.

Role Responsibilities:

Overseeing our Grant Programmes

· Driving work in areas where our organisation can add value and meet need, including scoping new potential programmes and partnerships as well as ensuring our current programmes evolve

· Lead on delivering high quality  funding programmes that meet regulatory (AMRC) requirements as appropriate and provide an excellent experience for applicants, both successful and unsuccessful

· Be responsible for the financial management of budget associated with our funding programmes, working closely with the Finance Team

· Lead and manage the programme teams to analyse the external environment, identify unmet need and how we can add greater value in the sectors we work in

· Proactively disseminate insights from our funded research and project partners, gather sector knowledge, e.g. through delivering presentations, networking and representing our organisation externally with other grant makers/philanthropic organisations and sector partners. 

Impact, evaluation and learning

· Work with the Director of Impact and External Affairs to develop and deliver an appropriate impact framework for our organisation, ensuring that we’re able to amplify the work we fund and demonstrate value to our funders and supporters

· Work closely with the Head of Communications and External Affairs to ensure that the narrative around our impact is powerful and consistent

· Initiate and facilitate new partnership opportunities, e.g. for co-funding grants, or for co-creating innovative project ideas for consideration through our funding programmes.

Strategic projects and relationships:

· Act as the primary point of contact for scientific advisors and subject matter experts, supporting the programme managers by providing senior stakeholder and relationship management support, e.g. with funded researchers, institutions, sector partners and potential future partners

· Commission relevant evidence gathering, project or development work to support the evolution of our funding programmes, specifically our focus during 2024/25 on the North East of England .

· Work with fundraising colleagues to provide support and information to develop cases for support, including pitching alongside the fundraising team when required.

· Work closely with colleagues in communications to ensure that the scope and impact of our work is widely understood and communicated

· Lead on specific initiatives to support our research strategy and to enhance our social change funding programme, e.g. developing a network for early career researchers and involvement of experts by experience across our work.

· Lead the team to deliver high quality funding programmes, ensuring that impact is embedded and widely shared

· Provide leadership to the team to support Its ongoing and future development, including creating ways to build skills and expertise within the team

Person specification:

Skills, knowledge & experience

Essential 

· A postgraduate degree in a biomedical sciences, health or social sciences subject or equivalent work experience

· Experience of working in a funder organisation, ideally supporting research or social change programme delivery including patient and public involvement and/or other co-production methods.

· Enthusiastic about vision research with strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret, analyse and summarise evidence, including from technical scientific papers, for a variety of audiences.

· Experience of monitoring, evaluation and learning within a grant making environment, including facilitating opportunities for grantees to come together, either through structured development programmes or sharing best practice

· Proficient in the use of standard IT packages including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and ideally familiar  with Grant Management Systems or able to learn how to use these quickly.

Desirable

· An advanced research degree (PhD) in biomedical sciences, health or social sciences subject or equivalent work experience

· Experience of working directly in or supporting vision and sight loss research or funding programmes.

· Understanding of the wider research and programme funding landscape and initiatives for responsible funding activities

Who are Women’s Aid?

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. We are a federation of over 170 organisations which provide just under 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across England. Centre for London is London’s independent think tank, and a registered charity. As Research Director, you will lead Centre for London’s research team, developing new solutions to London’s critical challenges, securing funding for our work, preparing, publishing and promoting reports, supporting public events, and communicating our work to stakeholders and policymakers. 

As a member of the senior leadership team, you will help develop and implement the organisational strategy; contribute to the development, fundraising and delivery of events and other projects; and promote the ideas of the organisation to build its influence in existing and new public and private arenas. 

The recommendations of your team will make a difference to policy and practice – tackling issues such as housing, poverty and inequality, employment and skills, transport and the public realm, the climate and nature crises, community resilience, and London’s place in the UK and the world. You will be line– managed by the CEO and work closely with the External Affairs and Development teams.

This role would best suit someone with significant experience leading policy research programmes – in a think tank, consultancy, central or local government, academia or similar. You will have a strong understanding of policy in London and the UK, project management skills, and be able to credibly communicate complex ideas to different audiences – in meetings, in writing, through blogs and articles, and in speeches. You will have strong analytical skills, including a track record of qualitative and quantitative research. You will have experience in fundraising, will have managed budgets, and will be confident working with researchers at different stages in their careers. However, we are less interested in what you have done, and more in what you can do.

This is ideally a full-time role; however, flexible working is embedded within our culture. As the Research Analyst you will support the provision and development of UCEA’s pay and workforce benchmarking services and a range of wider employment-related projects. You will have the opportunity to conduct in-depth quantitative and qualitative research, to communicate your findings to members and wider stakeholders. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to keep abreast of issues affecting the full range of employers across the HE sector.

You will communicate complex information clearly, both in writing and verbally. You will analyse sector data, e.g. Higher Education Statics Agency and ONS, and build and maintain benchmarking dashboards. This requires current intermediate level R skills, or clear aptitude for learning R to intermediate level, and intermediate or advanced Excel. Experience of using survey software to collect, analyse and report on bespoke quantitative surveys is essential.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre works with diverse allies and partners to put human rights at the core of companies’ business models and end abuse; to support communities and workers in securing their rights and accountability for corporate abuse; and to encourage governments to create the right regulation and incentives to uphold human rights in business. Our work covers the full gamut of human rights in business, with particular focus on three thematic programmes: just energy transition and natural resources; accountable digital technologies; and workers’ rights in global supply chains. These are strengthened by three cross cutting themes: civic freedoms and human rights defenders; corporate legal accountability; and racial and gender justice.

The position

The successful candidate will work closely with the EU/Western Europe team to contribute to our work in the region, with a particular focus on debates and developments around corporate accountability regulations in Europe. The Researcher will be responsible for updating and maintaining the digital portal with relevant news items and information on policy trends related to the region, engaging with European companies to seek responses to allegations of human rights abuse, both within the region and in their value chains, as well as supporting our efforts to promote effective implementation of (mandatory) due diligence.

Responsibilities

• Media monitoring: Conduct media monitoring online in English and German to identify news reports, NGO/civil society/trade union statements and reports, and policy development relating to business and human rights in the region as well as cases of alleged human rights abuse by European companies.
• Website content maintenance: Publish relevant items in English and German on the Resource Centre website, curate information, news and resources on online portal pages relating to Mandatory Due Diligence, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and Beyond Social Auditing.
• Company responses: Invite European companies in English and German to respond to allegations of human rights abuse and concerns raised by civil society about their conduct; maintain contact database information.
• Contribute to regional strategies and priorities: With partners and colleagues, support the EU team to implement our regional strategy, with a particular focus on the effective implementation of emerging and existing mandatory due diligence laws in Europe.
• Develop high quality written materials: (Co-)author materials for our website, including newsletters, blog posts, workshop summaries, guidance documents, briefing notes and papers.
• Outreach and representation: Help sustain and build a network of contacts in the region. Occasionally represent the Resource Centre at meetings, conferences and workshops.
• Administrative and project support: Assist as necessary with ad-hoc administrative tasks including donor reporting, organising travel and workshops.
• Team work: Participate in regularly scheduled Global Team and EU team calls, and ad-hoc calls and meetings as needed.

• Experience: Experience working on business and human rights issues or in a related field; understanding of relevant international standards

A major new initiative, The CRUK Cancer Data Trusted Research Programme (TRP), is an advisory service that offers a secure environment which supports researchers who are working with sensitive cancer-related data. It will also enable the further use of CRUK-funded research data.

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Research Data Officer. In this role, you'll play a key role in the running of the TR Programme and work with external researchers to help the format and wrangle their data to conduct their research. Further to this, you'll work with CRUK's internal teams and the wider research community to catalogue the data holdings held by CRUK and support the interoperability of data holdings within CRUK and with other health data repositories across the UK and internationally.

What will I be doing?

• Catalogue and publish comprehensive data dictionaries of CRUK data holdings (including on the HDR UK Gateway)

• Working with CRUK's TRP and Data Liaison Teams to onboard data sets and users into our data architecture

• Working closely with the wider Data and Informatics Team and external infrastructure providers to onboard research projects and ensure technical setup is in line with researcher requirements, including validating testing of the environment before it goes live with external researchers

• Working closely with the onboarded researchers to ensure their data management plans, configuration, formatting and processing of the data can be achieved

• Developing and establishing linkage and interoperability with datasets and repositories external to CRUK

• Transferring data from completed projects to centralised repositories of data in line with appropriate permissions and approvals

• Developing and delivering training materials to external researchers about the environment and ensure confidence in ability before go-live

• Working closely with relevant teams across CRUK to develop the TRP

• Developing and maintaining relationships with relevant external organisations

What skills are you looking for?

• Strong understanding of health data management principles, practices and standards, particularly related to cancer and its management

• Knowledge and understanding of wider health, care and social data related to cancer and the experience of patients

• Knowledge of data dictionary publication methods, meta-data management and data cataloguing techniques, methods, and coding schemes such as SNOMED-CT, ICD-9, and READ codes

World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRFI) leads and unifies a network of cancer prevention charities based in Europe and the Americas. Our shared vision is a world where no one develops a preventable cancer.

WCRFI is responsible for the Global Cancer Update Programme (CUP Global) which is our global cancer prevention and survival programme focussing on the links between diet, nutrition, physical activity and cancer. Forming the cornerstone of all our work, the project is the only authoritative scientific resource of its kind in the world.

We are seeking a Head of Research Interpretation who will be responsible for managing the delivery of CUP Global. You will chair the CUP Global Secretariat and also provide support to the Assistant Director of Research and Policy and the Director of Research, Policy and Innovation in the oversight and strategic direction of the programme of work. You will also contribute to other projects such as ensuring that the WCRF network has the latest global cancer statistics, including new estimates of the preventability of cancer. 

You will be educated to PhD level, with ideally at least 2 years postdoctoral experience in a research environment, in a relevant area (e.g. nutrition, cancer, epidemiology, public health). You will have a good understanding of public health and epidemiology, nutrition and/or cancer and have experience of conducting and/or interpreting systematic reviews. You will have strong people management skills, with direct line management experience.
