About the role

Are you an experienced corporate fundraiser with an interest in working in the international development sector? Are you creative, strategic, highly organised, a confident and effective communicator and strong team player? 

We are looking for an experienced Senior Corporate Fundraising Manager to work closely with the Head of Programme Funding to drive new donor engagement and secure sustainable, multi-year funding. If you are seeking a dynamic and engaging fundraising role which offers you the chance to play a pivotal role within a small but ambitious organisation, then this could be the job for you.

You will be an exemplary relationship builder and have experience in developing multi-faceted corporate partnerships (ideally with experience and success in employee engagement, corporate sponsorship, and/or operational partnerships).

The role also line manages the Senior Fundraising Officer post, a position that provides administrative and fundraising support across the whole fundraising team.  Please note that we are a small team and so you’ll need to be comfortable rolling up your sleeves to help out team members and to support new business across other restricted income streams.

Role Summary

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

Team Leadership and Management

17.  Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.

18.  Lead the process of recruiting and inducting new team members, as appropriate.

19.  Proactively develop your own skills and experience as well as those of staff within your team.

Cross-organisational Role

20.  Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.

21.  Be an active and positive member of the charity’s Executive Team.

22.  Work with colleagues across the charity to support their work and to act as ‘one team’.

23.  Work particularly closely with colleagues in the Wales office, optimising opportunities for joint working.

24.  Contribute actively and positively to the development of charity-wide strategies and activity.

Other Duties

Who are Women’s Aid?   

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. We are a federation of over 170 organisations which provide just under 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across England. Purpose of the Senior Communications Officer role:   

As Senior Communications Officer, the successful candidate will be a creative, agile and impactful professional, who will play a pivotal role in shaping Women’s Aid’s communications campaigns, working closely with the Communications Manager and the Head of Media, Brand and Relationships. The successful candidate will take the lead on generating creative, engaging content and ideas for Women’s Aid communications – including major campaign moments and brand awareness. Working across all external channels, including traditional media and social media, you will curate compelling stories that build our profile and target key audiences in our mission to keep women and children safe from domestic abuse. You’ll be joining us at an exciting time, as we mark our 50th Birthday with some powerful campaigns and engagement. 

Key duties and responsibilities of the Senior Communications Officer: 

• To be the key communications officer representing the communications team, developing the key messaging of external campaigns, brand-building and communications for the organisation and developing public awareness of these.

• To lead on planning, drafting and implementing a communications plan for Women’s Aid key communications campaigns such as International Women’s Day, 16 Days, as well as wider organisational projects, incorporating press and social media and providing media support as required. 

• To develop relevant media and social media contacts, as well as contacts in the sector, to maximise the reach and coverage of key communications campaigns as well as wider organisational projects. 

• To work with colleagues to ensure the campaigns take an intersectional approach and centres the most marginalised voices. 

• To work with a diverse range of survivor case studies and media spokespeople, including Women’s Aid member organisations, and to ensure they are treated in an appropriate and safe manner.

• To help identify both proactive and reactive media opportunities. 

• To write blogs, news articles and promotional copy for Women’s Aid.

• To proof and typeset publications as required.

• To be part of the communications team out-of-hours on call rota for media calls. 

• To line manage the Junior Communications Officer 

What we are looking for in our Senior Communications Officer: 

• At least two years experience working in communications/journalism/publications or similar. 

• Experience of liaising with a variety of individuals and organisations of all seniorities, internally and externally. 

• Experience of maintaining systems for information storage and retrieval.

• Experience of online communications/websites/social media, including Content Management Systems. 

• Experience delivering public-facing campaigns with a range of stakeholders. 

• Experience in getting effective PR results. 

• Ability to produce high quality written material, for copy writing, copy editing and publicity materials, posters and press releases. 

• Capable of translating complex information into audience-friendly messages. 

• Ability to carry out a range of research and information-gathering activities. 

• IT skills, including accurate data inputting skills, ability to use Microsoft programmes, understanding of Content Management Systems and troubleshooting simple website problems,  and willingness to learn new packages and IT skills as required. 

• Ability to communicate sensitively with survivors of domestic violence to discuss case studies. 

• Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise work, work to tight deadlines and respond to urgent unplanned demands. 

• An understanding of public affairs and the role that campaigning plays.

THE OPPORTUNITY

THE ROLE – SENIOR EMPLOYMENT ADVISORS

Senior Employment Advisors (SEAs) will manage a team of Employment Advisers to provide supervision, training, caseload management, and role modelling best practice approaches to job retention. The SEA will play a pivotal role in managing a high-quality service that meets the exacting standards of our commissioners and delivers positive outcomes for service users.

Providing vision and direction, you will lead the development of our network of relationships, building capacity and ensuring the success of our job retention services across all providers. Making sure our clients receive the best service to meet their needs, you will be comfortable in managing contracts against our agreed service objectives and performance outcomes. Uppermost in your mind, will be building strong collaborative working relationships in your community with our partners.

This role would ideally suit someone experienced in employment support and managing a small team, however, we will consider applicants with transferable skills from relevant fields (e.g. psychology, counselling, human resources or recruitment).

SENIOR EMPLOYMENT ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Manage a high performance, quality-driven service. You will be required to lead by example in line with our values, motivate the team and demonstrate best practice principles of delivering a job retention service. This will include managing direct reports and working alongside managers and frontline staff and members of partner/commissioner organisations.

2. Deliver a role with a dual responsibility to clinical partners/therapeutic services and Twining, while complying with Twining’s internal procedures and all relationships, both internally and externally.

3. Monitor and manage performance of the Employment Advisors (EAs), carry out monthly 1-2-1 meetings, quarterly performance appraisal reviews, managing the full spectrum of employee relations issues, the wellbeing of your staff and guiding EAs both individually and collectively on the achievement of individual and team performance targets.

4. Manage a small caseload advising and supporting clients to address problems in the workplace to help them return to work, remain in work, or find new employment.

5. Submit accurate, timely monthly reports to the Service Lead and any other management information requested on the performance and delivery of the service.

6. Produce regular monitoring reports for external stakeholders, including commissioners.

7. Create a culture of continuous improvement, taking ownership for problems, adopting forward thinking strategies for improvement in everything we do and take the lead on making change happen.

8. Identify barriers for service excellence and work with internal and external stakeholders to implement solutions to ensure a high-performance service.

9. Identify, devise and lead on the training needs of staff and arrange appropriate training to support with continuous professional development.

10. Support the design and delivery of in-house staff training and development (including facilitating peer learning and best practice).

11. Lead on presentations, network meetings, site meetings or any other people-facing activity required of the service.

12. Coordinate the work of EAs to build relationships with local employers to access the hidden labour market, external agencies and delivery of job seeking groups.

13. Provide solution focused monthly supervisions and case management for each EA as well as those with other providers/partners.

Overview of job

This is a hugely exciting hands-on role which combines a marketeer’s audience-focused thinking and digital skills, along with an understanding of using data to engage new audiences and encourage supporters to donate. The postholder will be responsible for supporting the delivery of various fundraising campaigns and activities, as well as the day-to-day running of our social media channels.

Responsibilities of the role

• Lead key marketing areas and provide support across the organisation to deliver effective communication and fundraising activities. 

• Manage and schedule social media activity. 

• Use social and digital platforms to drive fundraising through our digital community. 

• Lead on creating insights reports that can drive fundraising, using data from the website, social media insights, our fundraising platforms and the Global insights team. 

• Support the delivery of the marketing strategy and implement communications plans for fundraising and awareness-raising activities.   

• Maintain a monthly content plan and create engaging storytelling content for our platforms.  

• Find new and exciting ways of telling our story, promoting activities, and engaging with our audiences across digital platforms, keeping an eye out for trends and competitor activity.

• Create high quality assets to support activity using Photoshop, Canva and in-app video editing tools.  

• Use Canva, Photoshop and in-app (video) editing tools to design and create assets including social media posts, short-form videos, ROS ads, screens, internal resources, fundraising materials, print programme ads, team presentations and digital banners. 

• Collecting photo and video content (on iPhone) for use on social channels at charity visits, challenge events, fundraising activities, Make Some Noise Day and Make Some Noise Night etc.  

• Act as a brand guardian, ensuring all internal and external stakeholders have the resources and support they need to meet brand guidelines.  

• Ensure all output is compliant and in-line with the latest rules and industry guidelines.  

• Support on production of email marketing. 

• Support on managing our website through content generation, copywriting, uploads and data analytics 

• Maintain Google Ad Grants, SEO and SMO tactics and analyse data to optimise future marketing, content and design.    

• Working with the Social, Digital and CRM teams across Global to collaborate on content creating an ‘always on’ presence for Make Some Noise across the brands’ digital channels.  

• Digital reporting of social media platforms, fundraising platforms, QR codes, email newsletters, UTM links and the website and utilising these insights to make content recommendations to inform future fundraising and content plans. 

• Supporting the wider team in creation of marketing and fundraising materials 

• Community management of our social media platforms – posting and scheduling content, replying to messages, comments and replies.  

• Managing our subscriber data   

• Assisting in product development, working with internal and external stakeholders to build new products for our store.  

• Assist with online presentation and promotion of the Make Some Noise shop and take ownership of shop brand guidelines. 

• Support delivery of the brand review and ongoing work to drive brand awareness 

• Support the wider charity team with marketing support as and when required.

• Write-up post-project reports and analysis, suggesting areas of improvement.

• Look out for digital trends and innovations that could benefit Global’s Make Some Noise in terms of awareness, efficiency or fundraising income. 

What you will need

The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of the following:

• Background: Relevant experience in digital, marketing or communications environment. Previous charity experience is an advantage.   

• Social and Digital: You’ll have an excellent grasp of social and digital marketing and experience of using digital platforms to engage audiences.  

• Analytical: You will be data driven and always looking at the insights to inform and improve future activity, especially with regards to social media activity/engagement and user journeys from digital to donation. 

• Writing: You’ll be experienced in writing content for a variety of media, with a brilliant style that can range from punchy to emotive, to suit different audiences and activations. You’ll have a high standard of literacy and strong attention to detail. 

• Planning: You’ll be highly organised, with demonstrable experience of working under pressure, often to tight deadlines.

About the role

The Centre for Ageing Better launched the first ever campaign focusing on ageism in January 2024.

Ageism is the most widespread form of discrimination in the UK. And it will impact us all at some point, particularly as we get older. Ageism affects how society sees older people: they’re often reduced to offensive stereotypes, patronised, or treated as a burden. And it even affects how we see ourselves. As the years progress, we start to believe what we read, see and hear, and come to think that we’re ‘past it’.

The Head of Ageism Campaign plays a key role in a small team responsible for planning and delivering a nationwide public-facing campaign to bring an end to ageism in England. The public-facing campaign is one strand of a wider ‘age-friendly’ social movement aimed to make people think, feel and act differently about ageing, which will work on a number of levels and with a range of different audiences.

Under the direction of the Director of Communications & Policy and with an expert external consultant, this role is responsible for planning, delivering, measuring and iterating campaign activities that lead to measurable changes in attitudes and behaviour amongst the public.

The campaign will position Ageing Better as a thought leader and expert on ageism in England and mobilise the public and stakeholders around key activity and campaign moments, working at a national, regional and local level.

The postholder will jointly manage a creative agency to deliver phase two of our mass marketing campaign, ‘always on’ activity, and a moment of collective action once a year for warm audiences and ambassadors for the campaign.
