Job summary

We are looking for a Chief Executive who can provide leadership, aligned with our valies and manage the organisation, working with the Trustee Board to provide vision and communicate a clear and inspiring strategic direction, implementing change as required.

• To lead all staff and volunteers engaged by Motiv8 to successfully achieve objectives in line with Motiv8 valies in an inclusive way

UNISON are partnering exclusively with Robertson Bell in their search for a new Head of Internal Audit to join their team on a permanent basis. UNISON is the UK’s leading public sector trade union, with more than 1.3 million members working in the public services, energy services, private, voluntary and community sectors.

The Head of Internal Audit will report into the Finance Director and will manage a well-established team of six undertaking routine branch audits on a cyclical basis as well as ad hoc special investigations when required including fraud investigations.

The organisation:

UNISON employs around 1,200 staff, approximately 370 at our national centre in Euston, central London and the remainder in our 12 regions across the UK including Northern Ireland. Its main functions include supporting the General Secretariat and the NEC via the Finance and Resource Management Committee. With an annual subscription income of around £170 million, the key objective is the effective management and safeguarding of the union’s finances, ensuring that UNISON considers the financial implications when meeting its objectives and the needs of its members. There are 34 members of staff in the department with responsibilities over financial management and operations, regional and branch financial management, staff pensions and internal audit.

The role:

• Managing, integrating, and coordinating the activities of the Internal Audit Team and overseeing and ensuring the delivery of a planned program of audit visits to branches
• Reviewing, testing, and monitoring of branch activities to ensure compliance with internal and external financial regulations and legal requirements.
• Undertaking branch audits and fraud investigations when problems are identified at a branch, regional or national level, to minimise the risk of exposure and safeguard the Union’s assets.
• The post holder will report findings to Senior Management, NEC, and to external parties as and when circumstances dictate.
• Ensuring that the production of reports and similar communications present the financial affairs of UNISON in an appropriate manner to members, committees, Secretariat, Senior Managers, as well as other external agencies.
• Liaising with relevant committees, legal parties (internal and external) and any relevant third-party representatives on legal cases and proceedings.
• Putting forward and following up on recommendations to mitigate risks identified to Senior Management, Regions and Branches and maintaining the audit log, records and working papers to high standards.
• Developing and updating internal audit procedures, relevant policy and process documentation including handbooks, training materials and guidance ensuring they are fit for purpose and communicated effectively.

The successful candidate will:

• Hold a recognised CCAB accountancy qualification with proven post-qualification experience in audit and financial accounting
• Be experienced in managing an Internal Audit function in a large and complex organisation.
• Have the ability to lead audits and investigations to conclusions and report to the necessary internal and external bodies.
• Have highly developed interpersonal and communicative skills.
• Hold the ability to advise on financial and operational matters concerning compliance with internal governance and external regulatory and legal requirements to a wide range of audiences.

Arts Emergency – Head of Fundraising

Arts Emergency, a mentoring charity and support network aiming to address the inequalities in the creative and cultural sectors, is looking for an experienced and motivated fundraiser to provide leadership and management for fundraising activities. 

Since 2013, Arts Emergency has been providing 16-25 year olds in London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and beyond with a trained mentor working in their field of interest. Mentors help Young Talent set goals, explore their passions and make decisions about higher education, training and careers.  After they complete a year of mentoring, Young Talent can continue to access opportunities, advice, resources and paid work from the Arts Emergency Network until they turn 26. The network is made up of thousands of cultural professionals who’ve all offered to share crucial gateways into hard to crack industries like TV, publishing and architecture with young people.

This position will be responsible for raising the necessary income to ensure Arts Emergency’s high-quality, person focused, asset-based services for young people are sustainably funded and can

scale. This is a new role that reports to the Director of Fundraising & Marketing, overseeing a diverse income portfolio including individual giving, major donors, trusts and foundations, corporate donations, commercial income and community fundraising. The Head of Fundraising will have a particular focus on managing and growing the charity’s income from individuals and organisations, with an aim to increase overall fundraising to £1.25m in 2026.

The Senior Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager plays a leadership role in team management, development, and delivery of ARUK’s influencing strategy. The role leads a highly engaged and high-performing team that brings the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK to life and rallies people to our cause, devising powerful campaigns and building support among decision makers to invest in dementia research and ensure people with dementia can benefit from breakthroughs.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is a leading voice on dementia and research, and this postholder will develop a credible and comprehensive public affairs and campaigns strategy for the charity and oversee external stakeholder engagement activity with Government and decision makers. They will lead a team covering, public affairs and campaigns functions.

The Senior Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager brings expertise in developing influential campaigns, political engagement programmes, and devising strategies to achieve change in Government and NHS policy and practice.

The Senior Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager reports into the Head of Policy and Public Affairs and works closely with the colleagues across Policy, Communications, and Information and Involvement to ensure that Alzheimer’s Research UK continues to be positioned as the go-to organisation on dementia and dementia research. It would be advantageous for the postholder to be experienced at people management and working across multiple projects, bringing the drive to seek out new and proactive opportunities for the department and wider charity.

Main duties and responsibilities of the role:

· Leadership of the Public Affairs and Campaigns team, line managing two Managers and a total team of 4 people.

· Manage the day-to-day budgeting and reforecasting process, with an expenditure budget of circa £100,000, ensuring that the team operates cost effectively in meeting its objectives.

· Lead the development of a programme of influencing work, ensuring the team deliver high quality, impactful outputs such as Parliamentary events, Party Conference activities and other compelling activities that raise awareness of dementia, and drive investment in dementia research.

· Leadership of cross-organisational groups to deliver the strategic and influencing priorities for ARUK

· Represent ARUK on coalitions and external working groups as appropriate.

Public Affairs

· Work with the Head of Policy and Public Affairs and through their team, to deliver organisational strategy and develop positioning on key parliamentary and policy issues.

· Advise Alzheimer’s Research UK on effective political positioning to achieve our goals; working to ensure we are able to successfully influence key Government policy and decisions

· Build and maintain effective relationships with decision-makers and opinion formers including in Government and in Parliament.

· Develop and deliver a public affairs strategy for Alzheimer’s Research UK, working closely with their team, with a range of creative tactics that create pressure, build momentum and drive forward our influence in Parliament and with Government and opposition parties.

· Ensure ARUK has a meaningful role in shaping future legislation on dementia and scientific research.

· Work with the Head of Policy and Public Affairs to develop a synergistic Public Affairs and Campaigns strategy that embeds and exploits our policy work

· Lead responses and briefings on key legislation and guidance, including proposed drafting amendments where appropriate.

· Lead public affairs activity around Parliamentary set pieces e.g King’s Speech, Budget, General Elections and Party Conferences, to ensure that ARUK is positioned as one of the most influential charities in Parliament

· Oversee systems and processes within the team to develop high quality parliamentary briefs, develop submissions for parliamentary questions and to rapidly respond to other opportunities presented through the parliamentary system.

· Work closely with Parliamentarians, managing a programme of meetings and other parliamentary activities that maintain dementia research as a political priority for Government.

· Work across Policy and Public Affairs teams to ensure there is good co-ordination and communication of policy throughout the charity in order to foster a shared understanding of ARUK’s policies and issues.

· Responsible for providing written and in person briefings to colleagues who are attending Parliamentary and political meetings, including roundtables and select committee meetings

Stakeholder Engagement

· Provide leadership to the public affairs team and work closely with colleagues to grow political engagement in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

· Work across the organisation to develop stakeholder management processes and mechanisms that help us to manage and derive insights from key organisational relationships.

· Play a key role in developing ARUK’s influencing stakeholder contact programme and identifying opportunities and strategies to improve engagement.

· Supervise a programme of parliamentary engagement for the Chief Executive, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Director of Policy and Communications, working in conjunction with the Head of Governance and Head of Policy and Public Affairs.

Campaigns

· Ensure compliance with Charity Commission guidance, and other legislation on charities’ lobbying activities.

· Develop and implement campaign strategies that deliver against ARUK policy objectives.

· Grow digital campaigns and public affairs opportunities, building our reach and engagement with key audiences.

· Manage and grow a supporter-based campaigning network, online and offline, to advocate on behalf of ARUK, including the involvement of people affected by dementia.

· To work with the Head of Public Affairs and wider team to develop campaign ideas with key audiences that deliver against ARUK policy objectives.

What we are looking for:

· Experience working in a public affairs, campaigns, parliamentary leadership or strategy role in a national organisation in the private, public, or voluntary sector.

· Experience working extensively in politics, political communications agency or charities influencing on complex health, science or policy issues.

· Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and an understanding of how to influence and use the media, including thought leadership.

· Extensive experience developing and delivering multi-media and multi-channel campaign strategies to reach both mass and specialist audiences.

· Experience leading market research and user insight projects to shape campaigns and messaging.

· Knowledge of how to develop inclusive communications, particularly working with people affected by dementia.

· Detailed understanding of the medical research environment.

· Strong leadership skills and experience of managing diverse teams.

· Excellent organisational skills; the ability to manage a large number of tasks to meet multiple deadlines.

· Exemplary leadership with both short and long term strategic vision

Education should be the means to break the link between demographics and destiny. Yet every week 109 children in England – equivalent to three full classrooms – are asked to leave their schools and never come back, with disastrous personal and societal consequences. The Difference, a young education charity, was founded to change the story on this lost learning. It exists to build the status and expertise of teachers working with vulnerable children, particularly those who are excluded from mainstream schools.

By 2030, The Difference want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.

The organisation was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, The Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.

The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

Our first permanent Head of Fundraising will drive the growth and sustainability of our fundraising function. Key Responsibilities

• Drive the delivery of a new fundraising strategy for The Difference, motivating and involving key members of the team, particularly the Development and Impact Manager.
• Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of around 20-30 major individual prospects and donors with capacity to give £50k+, working with key stakeholders to solicit and close asks.
• Grow overall fundraised income from £1.25m to £1.9m annually in next 3 years.

About the role

Reporting to the CEO and managing a talented team of 2 HR Business Partners and 1 HR & Recruitment Administrator you will:

• Develop and implement HR strategies, processes and services aligned with our overall strategy and vision
• Develop Staff Wellbeing strategy and oversee the Staff Wellbeing Action Group
• Lead the HR function and team and be a pro-active member of the Senior Management Team
• Ensure high quality delivery of HR responsibilities including policies and processes, HRIS, resourcing, reward, employee services, management development, employee relations and learning
• Be the appointed competent person to advise on Health & Safety across the organisation, this includes ongoing monitoring via KPI’s and internal audits and leading the Health & Safety committee meetings
• Support and continue to develop the Employee Forum, including being a point of contact for the Union
• Embed a co-productive approach with partners, managers and leaders to achieve strategy and targets
• Monitor and provide insight and guidance on the effectiveness of people management practices and processes via a range of KPIs
• Support change initiatives and programmes
• Be an influential and visible figure in the business driving improvements forward in relation to people and culture
• Budget management and oversight
• Ensure HR compliance and risk management for employee relations issues and ensuring the organisation remains up to date with relevant legislation

About you

Essential criteria

• Previous experience across most HR disciplines such as recruitment and retention, wellbeing, learning and development, and HR administration as well as navigating complex HR issues
• Strong team manager who inspires and motivates hybrid and remote team members, promoting a positive and productive work environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively
• Strong relationship building skills at a senior level internally and externally and able to nurture partnerships and collaborative relationships with a range of organisations and stakeholders
• Ability to lead change projects from initiation to completion, ensuring timely and successful implementation
• Proficient in identifying and mitigating risks associated with change initiatives
• Experience of using office productivity software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) or equivalent and HRIS
• Takes a values-based approach to HR, aligning practices and decisions with the core values and culture of the organisation
• Has an understanding or passion for mental health and what we do

Desirable criteria

• Strong experience in all HR disciplines including Reward management, organisational design and talent management
• Significant leadership experience gained at senior level in a complex environment including working with unions either formally or informally
• Demonstrates self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and integrity, working with clarity and honesty
• Experience of working in the charity/mental health sector or with a board of trustees
• Ability to think strategically, develop a clear vision for the organisation, and influence key stakeholders. Proven track record in making sound strategic decisions considering long-term impact
• Passionate about the organisational vision, inspiring and motivating teams towards ambitious goals. Visionary and resilient during periods of change
