The Canal and River Trust is committed to growing its fundraised income and has developed ambitious targets for fundraising over the coming years. Currently seeking a Philanthropy Manager. The Philanthropy Manager is an exciting role within the Philanthropy & Partnerships team which will identify, cultivate and maximise relationships with Major Donors and Family Foundations through research, networking, events, proposals, and excellent stewardship. Securing philanthropic income against target to further the work of the Canal & River Trust.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
- Identify, cultivate and develop a portfolio of Major Donor and Family Foundation prospects.
- Meet or exceed fundraising targets each year.
- Develop high quality funding proposals, applications and reports for submission to prospects and donors.
- Support the development of the new Major Donor fundraising programme, taking a proactive approach to networking, and cultivating new cold contacts and prospects.
- Support the development and delivery of the Stewardship and Events programme and other Philanthropy processes.
- Depending on experience, may be involved in developing the US fundraising strategy with the support of the Senior Philanthropy Manager, Head of P&P and Director of Fundraising.
- Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
- Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.
Experience & Knowledge
- Proven experience of philanthropy fundraising with a track record of initiating new philanthropic relationships.
- Successful track record of meeting or exceeding income targets.
- Experience of identifying and cultivating cold prospects.
- Experience of deepening donor relationships and growing philanthropic giving year on year.
- Thorough knowledge of legal, financial and ethical considerations related to fundraising from Major Donors and Family Foundations.
- Experience of developing high quality proposals and stewardship reports for prospects and donors.
- Experience of effectively using a CRM system for fundraising.
- Experience of fundraising in the Heritage or Environment sector is desirable.

We are seeking an experienced fundraising and business development professional responsible for co-ordinating Birthrights fundraising ambitions – including developing and delivering a new fundraising strategy that is aligned with our new organisational strategic framework. We want to strengthen our longer-term financial stability and ensure our fundraising aligns with our commitments to anti-oppressive practices.

You will be resourceful and organised, with the ability to build great relationships and have excellent co-ordination and administration skills. Your experience may be in one area of income generation or in many, but you will be able to see how you can draw on your experiences to shape and deliver a broader fundraising strategy.

Role outline and purpose
Working as a key link between the Philanthropy team and wider organisational teams, the Philanthropy Content Reporting Manager – Trusts will create specific reporting materials for our key funders. You will hold responsibility for a reporting schedule for named partners and work closely with our impact and finance teams to track progress of funded projects and ensure that we deliver partner/funder updates in line with agreements.
You will have experience of supporting high-value fundraising teams and be adept at building strong relationships across the organisation to help inform the Trusts team about the activities and outputs of our operational teams. You will understand complex qualitative and quantitative data and use this to write up, design and produce high-quality communications for donors. You will be confident at taking the lead on the reporting requirements of our relationship managers, with efficiency and effectiveness.
Responsibilities
• Lead on the bespoke and restricted high-quality reports for funders in line with grant conditions
• Work closely with our project delivery, impact, communications and finance teams to ensure funds are delivering greatest impact for our donors
• Keep up to date on project delivery plans and aspirations
• Understand and translate both qualitative and quantitative information and present these in a visually compelling, digestible format
• Provide insight and performance information to help inform team strategy/projections, including the management of CRM, financials, and KPI reporting requirements
• Coordination of events to support effective donor engagement

• Experience in producing high-quality donor reports
• A track record of working collaboratively across a number of teams, including fundraising, operations and communications

This organisation runs projects that transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and young people every year. Children who have lived in poverty, sexual exploitation and those living with disabilities.
As the Philanthropy Manager, you will take a leading role in managing and developing high-value relationships with existing and new potential major donors. Reporting to the Senior Philanthropy Manager and joining a collaborative team, you will support on the strategic direction and implementation of the charity’s major donor fundraising and focus on securing gifts of £5k plus. An opportunity to join a growing team and have variety across a major donor portfolio, this is a great chance for a philanthropy fundraiser to join a well-known charity brand and grow their donor portfolio.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in securing four, five or six-figure gifts from either trusts and foundations or major donors. They will be confident in creating compelling cases of support and be able to build long lasting relationships with existing and new donors within the high value space. This person will be able to work autonomously, but also collaboratively within a fast-paced team.
