Job description

Job purpose 

UCA is home to over 6,000 creative students, and as part of UCA Students’ Union the Advice & Wellbeing Coordinator is key to UCASU’s commitment to helping students have an amazing time at university.

At the heart of UCA Students’ Union’s relationship with its members, you will support students when things don't go to plan and lead on our work to promote a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing on campus.

You will be responsible for supporting casework via a number of channels, whether face to face, via video, email, or social media. Individual and group support are ways in which you can advise students on issues ranging from mental health and wellbeing, to complaints, academic appeals and even sexual violence and misconduct. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of current themes and issues within Students’ Unions and Higher Education Institutions and act as an advocate for students in non-legal dealings, primarily with the University but also with external parties.

The successful individual will have a strong understanding of the complexities of working in partnership with a large organisation and will be able to build comprehensive cases to empower UCA students. The role is expected to liaise with a variety of individuals including Students’ Union staff, Sabbatical Officers and University staff and therefore excellent interpersonal skills are required, in order to build and maintain relationships with these key stakeholders. The successful candidate will also be responsible for contributing to the Union's vision and strategy and will need to develop and maintain current structures.

Main Duties 

Responsible for providing one-to-one and group advice to students for academic issues and providing support and help for wellbeing related issues

  • Undertake casework with students on a 1-2-1 and group basis which will involve contact with students face to face, over the telephone and via email.
  • Assess individual cases and advise students on how they may best move forward, in light of legislation, relevant regulations and University regulations.
  • Where appropriate, act as an advocate of students in non-legal dealings primarily with the university, and on occasions with external parties.
  • Plan tasks and prepare content that contribute to publicity campaigns, workshops, website and information publications.
  • Manage the case management system and liaise with third parties on any relevant updates.
  • Maintain documents and systems in line with Union procedures.
  • Liaise with University staff and other relevant external parties to share information in relation to advice work and related projects.

Contribute to the Union’s strategic and operational planning and provide support to the Sabbatical Officers on issues relating to advice and wellbeing.

  • Present monthly reports on caseloads to Deputy Chief Executive.
  • Present monthly reports on key data findings to Union Development Manager.
  • Contribute to strategic planning by putting forward ideas which improve advice and wellbeing based upon evidence from all relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the operational planning of the department, in particular the academic calendar and the activities that fall within it.
  • Review the success of advice and wellbeing and make future recommendations on how to improve the service.
  • Advise sabbatical officers on specific projects relating to advice and wellbeing
