The Green House Bristol is looking for a new Treasurer to join our Trustee board. As Treasurer you will maintain an overview of The Green House’s financial affairs.
Overview of the role
3 in 20 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. Yet, with access to the right help, children and their families can heal and recover. The Green House offers this lifeline, delivering the only specialist service to children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse living in Avon and Somerset.
We are currently recruiting for a new Treasurer to join our Trustee board. As a Trustee of The Green House, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to survivors of child sexual abuse, and their families.
In addition to the general duties as Trustee, as Treasurer you will ensure that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls, and procedures are put in place and report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.
Please note that you will also be appointed as a Director of The Green House, reflecting our registration as both a charity and a Private Limited Company.

Duties of all Trustees

Prepare for and attend Board meetings, using your skills, expertise and knowledge to contribute to discussions.

Participate in setting the charity’s strategic direction. Contribute to decision-making on key matters, including long-term planning, financial sustainability, and program development.

Provide support, learning and challenge to The Green House’s CEO.

Ensure The Green House acts in line with its governing document and complies with all relevant laws and regulations.

Ensure the charity lives its values (hope, creativity, and connection), delivering accountability to children who have experienced sexual abuse and their families.

Monitor operational progress against The Green House’s new strategy.

Ensure the charities financial and wider resources are being used effectively and treated with care.

Ensure all relevant policies and procedures are in place and are being implemented.

Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.

Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect The Green House’s interests, to the exclusion of your own personal and/or any third-party interests.

Duties of the Treasurer

Oversee the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees

Ensure that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.

Ensure that robust and comprehensive financial policies and insurances are in place, are revised as and when required, and are being implemented.

Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity.

Oversee and develop financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with The Green House’s Business Development Manager and CEO.

Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process and advising the Trustee Board representative and In-House Fundraising Team.

Ensure investments and assets are maximized.

Lead on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors.
-
Ensure that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, including the Charity Commission and the Registrar of Companies.

Keep the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Chief Executive to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.
Terms of appointment
Terms of office

Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, with renewal for two further terms to a maximum of three years.

This is a voluntary position, but all reasonable expenses are covered.
Time commitment (Approximately 2-4 days a month)

Attend monthly Board meetings. These are typically held on a Thursday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual although we do meet in-person on a quarterly basis.

Attend monthly Finance and Resources Meetings (max 1hr 30). These are typically held on a Monday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual. Ensuring that there is sufficient time within the month to work with the Business Development Manager to oversee and contribute to any actions relating to the Trustee Board and the role of the Treasurer (1.5 days per month).

Additional time is needed to take ownership of actions that arise from meetings (from supporting with recruitment and exit interviews where appropriate, to attending events on The Green House’s behalf). You will also need to be flexible in responding to emergent time-urgent issues when they arise.

We also ask Trustees to attend an initial induction day at The Green House, The Green House’s annual Festival of Activism against Child Sexual Abuse (1 day in early February) and spend a strategy day with the staff team (typically 1 day September). From time to time, depending on the nature of the Fundraising activity it may be necessary for Trustee’s to attend fundraising events/meetings with the CEO.

Background
Thyroid UK is a charitable company working primarily within the United Kingdom. Formed in 1998, we became a company limited by guarantee in 2007 and in 2008 we became a registered charity.
The provision of quality information for people with both diagnosed and undiagnosed thyroid disorders is the primary concern of Thyroid UK, and we work effectively in this field through dialogue with NHS departments, networking with other voluntary organisations, and providing services directly to patients.
We are a small charity, with just three permanent employees, plus contract staff, but we have a wide influence, and provide a great deal of support to our beneficiaries, within the UK and abroad. The charity’s annual income in 2023 was £96,900.54 with the majority of that income being spent on both running the charity and conducting campaigns and activities to support our beneficiaries.
The Thyroid UK Board of Trustees is a diverse group of 7 individuals, including the CEO, a Chairperson, Deputy Chair and this Treasurer role.
Role
We are looking to fill the position of treasurer for our Board of Trustees. Working with the CEO and Finance Manager, this role monitors the financial administration of the charity and reports to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health, in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements, to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make operational and strategic decisions.
The ideal candidate will have experience of finance or finance management, preferably including some experience in a small company or charity.
Time requirement
The role will require a time commitment of an average of 1 to 2 days per month, with more time required in some months than others. This includes three planned board meetings of approximately 3 hours (two held online and one held in London with the option to join remotely, if needed) and the Thyroid UK AGM.
The Treasurer should be available to support the CEO, Chair and fellow trustees between board meetings, including taking responsibility to deal with issues which may arise, and have one-to-one meetings with the CEO and Finance Manager before board meetings.
Term of office
The Treasurer’s term is two years, following which the trustees may re-elect the position for a further one or two term(s).
Remuneration
Thyroid UK is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation. Trustee roles are not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses for travel can be paid for those not living in London.
Key Responsibilities
· Liaise with CEO and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy, advising on the financial implications of Thyroid UK’s strategic plan
· Present Thyroid UK’s financial position and broader context at Trustee meetings, and oversee the production of an annual budget.

Oxfordshire Breastfeeding Support (OBS) is a small charity (a charitable incorporated organisation or CIO) providing free direct breastfeeding support to the families of Oxfordshire - via a mixture of virtual one to one appointments, in-person sessions, Zoom groups, a private Facebook group, antenatal workshops and work targeted at groups that are under-represented. Although founded as an independent charity in 2018, OBS’s work is a continuation of 12 years of breastfeeding support under the Baby Café umbrella. OBS is well known and respected in the community, with strong and valuable relationships with other service providers in the NHS, Local Authority and voluntary sectors. OBS is seeking to recruit a trustee to act as treasurer of trustees for a period of 2-3 years. In addition to the responsibilities of a general trustee, treasurer of the trustees will:

Time Commitment
The board meets a maximum of 4 times a year and the Treasurer is expected to be available for all meetings, in person or virtual – dates agreed in advance. -
The Treasurer will Chair the Finance Sub-Committee which meets every month, and sit on the HR & Recruitment Sub-Committee as agreed in advance.

Set up in 1993, we support families with at least one child under five in Bracknell Forest. We are an independent charity, and although associated with the federation of Home-Start UK, our trustees independently govern our direction and manage our finances. As the cost of living crises impact on families, we’re needed more than ever; our trustees are planning our future, and need good financial governance in order to survive and grow.
Our income in 2024/25 will be ~£140k, so we’re a small charity, with a big impact.

As someone with a professional background in accounting or finance, you’ll use your expertise to help ensure sound fiscal decision-making across all Home-Start Bracknell Forest projects. An understanding of how charity finance works is important, of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as support from local charity-support organisations is always available. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.

The Lipman Miliband Trust is a charity whose purpose is to support socialist research and education as well as “educational activities that raise public awareness and understanding of struggles and movements for peace, human rights and a more equal, diverse co-operative and democratic society.”
The Trust was established by socialist businessman Michael Lipman in 1974 and academic Ralph Miliband until his death in 1994. We are celebrating fifty years of the Trust’s existence this year – and looking forward to the next 50!
Having benefited from a significant increase in resources in recent years we have started on an exciting new phase of our development that has meant increasing staff support and expanding our outreach, fund-raising and grant-giving activities.
We are currently a Board of ten trustees and we are now seeking a Trustee Treasurer who shares our values and our belief in the vital importance of socialist education. You will work with our Trust Coordinator as well as external advisors and accountants in helping to manage our finances and investments, and be a member of our Governance and Finance Working Group. As is the case with all charities, our finances are critical to the success of our work so experience or understanding of financial management and accounting would be very welcome. This is a voluntary, unpaid post, but we are happy to pay for appropriate additional training and there will be a lot of support from the Trust Coordinator and other trustees.
Being a Trustee is a significant commitment and responsibility, but it is also hugely rewarding. The role will require you to attend each of our four Trustee meetings a year, and to participate in regular online meetings of the Finance & Governance Working Group. You will be part of strategic decision-making about the Trust, contribute towards the Trust’s governance and take part in decisions about grant awards.
We are based in different locations around the country and most of our work is conducted online, however we aim to meet in-person as a Board at least twice a year.
