Job description

At a pivotal moment in AfriKids’ history, join us to take our philanthropy fundraising to the next level. We have a bold strategy to reach more children than ever over the next decade and you will be integral in making it possible.

Summary of role

As Philanthropy & Partnerships New Business Manager you will be responsible for growing income from corporate partnerships and major donors through excellent new business development and fantastic donor stewardship. Reporting to the Fundraising Director, you will focus on identifying prospective individual donors and corporate partners and developing lasting relationships with them. You will also support the management of relationships with existing donors, ensuring all donors have a brilliant experience supporting AfriKids.

Joining our small but award-winning team, you will work closely with the Director of Fundraising, a Philanthropy & Partnerships New Business Manager and the team in Ghana, so strong relationship management skills will be essential. You are a values-driven, confident and determined fundraiser who thrives in a people orientated, target driven role.

Key responsibilities and duties

Managing relationships with prospects, donors and volunteers

  • Through meetings and correspondence, you will develop excellent relationships with existing major donors, communicating the impact of their support and keeping them engaged to maximise the value of AfriKids’ major donor income long-term
  • Where appropriate, you will involve AfriKids’ senior staff and the Board of Trustees to make the most of opportunities to engage and build relationships with existing and potential major donors
  • You will create and develop inspiring and compelling funding proposals, feedback and impact reports for major donors, ensuring they understand the impact of their gifts and are inspired to continue supporting

Securing donations

  • You will come up with great ideas for how to effectively build relationships, and engage and inspire people to support AfriKids with major gifts, ideally through multi-year commitments eg. events
  • You will manage a portfolio of both current and potential new major donors, to secure four to five figure donations and pledges to transform lives, delivering against an ambitious team target
  • You will ask major donors for financial gifts and engage appropriate senior leadership to increase the likelihood of a successful ask
  • Through relationship building, you will understand the motivations of each existing and potential new major donor, identifying the most suitable projects for them to support (where appropriate), enhancing their long-term value and experience as an AfriKids supporter

Identifying new major supporters and corporate partners

  • Majority of your time will be spent building and developing a pool of global major donor prospects and corporate partners who have the potential to make a big difference to young lives with AfriKids by giving five to six figure gifts
  • You will recruit, manage and support well connected, influential volunteers who will proactively fundraise through peer-to-peer fundraising, and make introductions from within their networks, working closely with them to come up with effective plans to engage them and bring in new gifts
  • You will identify potential new high-value donors and corporate partners through networking e.g. attending events
  • You will manage the new AfriKids Development Board, working closely with the Chair to recruit 3-5 new members each year.
  • You will develop new philanthropy products to cultivate new donors, as and when needed. 
  • You will research, develop and write high quality partnership proposals, cases for support, appeal letters, pitches and reports and submit them to prospective donors and corporate partners in a timely fashion.

General

  • You will prepare phased budgets and reforecasts in line with activity plans and progress to ensure the value and timing of planned restricted and unrestricted income to the organisation is accurate.
  • You will develop an excellent knowledge of AfriKids; work, liaise with colleagues to prepare and present high-quality information such as tailored presentations and proposals for the donor.
  • You will maintain an awareness of philanthropy and corporate giving trends, news, events and legislation in the UK, USA and Ghana and pick up on opportunities or topical issues that will enhance the charity.
  • You will work to an agreed individual target to deliver an agreed corporate income target annually.
  • You will create and maintain accurate records in line with GDPR on the CRM database of all leads, knowledge about partner organisations, individuals and any communications sent out/received as well as fundraising forecasts.  You will develop and use reports to analyse and report back on the data and your work.
  • You will assist with and lead events as needed, including but not limited to launch events and cultivation events
  • You will represent AfriKids at fundraising and other events as required as well as at occasional corporate and partner events
  • You will undertake other tasks that are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, to contribute to fundraising objectives and those of AfriKids

Essential
(please demonstrate all of these)

  • Extensive experience with prospecting and new business development
  • Proven track record of fundraising from high-net-worth individuals in the not-for-profit sector, or similar transferable experience gained in the commercial sector
  • Proven track record of corporate new business development in the not-for-profit sector, or similar transferable experience gained in the commercial sector
  • Experience of developing an delivering fundraising products to attract new supporters, or similar transferable experience gained in the commercial sector e.g. development boards, events, giving circles
  • A working knowledge of the principles of major gift fundraising and corporate fundraising
  • Tenacious and self-motivated approach to work
  • Performance and target driven
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Personable and engaging
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Highly professional, flexible and committed to achieve and exceed KPI’s
  • Ability to manage own workload through appropriate planning and prioritisation
  • Ability to understand complex international development systems, politics and economic environment, and communicate this in an engaging way with supporters
  • Dedicated team player with the desire to develop within an organisation

Bonus

  • Proven experience of working with senior figures and volunteers
  • Fundraising or relationship marketing certificate or qualification
  • Experience in wider fundraising disciplines
