Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) is seeking Trustees to join our board and provide governance to our dynamic charity. We particularly invite applications from BAME candidates and people with lived experience of the asylum process or irregular migration.

About Us 

AFRIL supports asylum seeking, vulnerable migrants, and refugee families to lift themselves out of poverty and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community. We provide both crisis support to meet immediate need, and longer-term, flexible programmes to tackle the underlying problems that lead families to be in crisis. 


AFRIL has three core services: 

  • The AFRIL Foodbank programme comprising the Helping Hands foodbank together with a range of wellbeing activities such as [email protected] and the Allotment of Refuge;

  • Rainbow Club Supplementary School, offering weekly additional education in English and Maths, arts and sports activities to children from refugee, migrant and asylum seeking backgrounds from early years to 11 years old;

  • The Advice and Advocacy Service, which offers welfare benefits, housing and generalist advice, accredited by AQS. The Service also includes an immigration advice service in partnership with Southwark Law Centre. 

Trustees are responsible for ensuring that AFRIL:

  • Complies at all times with its governing document, charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

  • Pursues its objects as defined in its governing document and strategic plan.

  • Maintains proper financial control and ensures that it uses its resources exclusively to pursue its objectives.

  • Provides employment procedures and support which respects the roles of staff/volunteers in delivering AFRIL’s services.

  • Monitors and manages risks and opportunities for all aspects of the organisation and its services.

  • Maintains effective board performance to ensure the effective and efficient administration of AFRIL, with particular attention to its finances, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, and staffing to deliver its core services.

In addition to the general duties outlined above, individual trustees take on specific responsibility for particular areas of the organisation’s business or functions to support its business, so as to balance the workload amongst trustees. We currently have seven trustees, including a chair, vice-chair, secretary and two trustees who share the role of treasurer. One trustee currently leads on HR, and another on fundraising, marketing and events. All trustees need the soft skills that promote good teamwork and an understanding of the context of a small service delivery charity. At this time we are particularly looking for trustees to support on:

  • AFRIL’s fundraising strategy (through support of AFRIL staff and volunteers) and engagement with new fundraising activities, such as individual giving, major gifts, regular giving, corporate partnerships etc. 

  • Monitoring and evaluating our impact in the delivery of services, ensuring that the client voice is central. 

  • Communications, marketing and events.

  • Developing our legal partnerships.

As a board member, you will be expected to be available for board meetings approximately every two months.These are generally an hour and a half long and take place on a weekday evening. Since the pandemic, these have taken place online, via Zoom.

In between board meetings, you will need to be able to commit some ad hoc time to consider papers, take part in email discussion on issues as they arise, and to attend meetings of the sub-committee/s relevant to the functions that you take on as a trustee – which will generally fall in between board meetings. You would also be expected to attend the charity’s AGM, which usually takes place on a Saturday afternoon in January/February.

Job Type: Volunteer. This post is an unpaid post however we are able to pay travel expenses within London for trustees on low incomes.
