It’s fantastic that you’d like to find out more about volunteering at St Mungo’s. As an Outreach Volunteer you will be assisting Outreach Workers to carry out shifts, adding vital capacity to the team, and enabling us to engage with more rough sleepers who have been referred both via StreetLink and those already known to the team. You will support with navigation, client assessments and note taking while engaging with rough sleeping clients with sensitivity and respect.
What will I be doing?
In this role, you will be supporting us with some or all of the following tasks:
- Assisting outreach workers to carry out shifts and look for referrals.
- Engaging with rough sleepers who have been referred via StreetLink and those known to the team.
- Helping clients access support around immigration, employment and reconnections and accommodation.
- Working together with the outreach worker and divide tasks where appropriate.
- Supporting outreach workers with navigation and note taking.
- Engaging with rough sleeping clients with sensitivity and respect.
- Adhering to St Mungo’s Policies and Procedures at all times.
- Promoting St Mungo’s work in an appropriate manner.
Actively promoting equality, diversity and inclusion among staff, fellow volunteers and clients.
Do I need to have specific skills?
- Have personal resilience.
- Be reliable and able to handle early start shifts.
- Good IT literacy.
- The physical ability to work on the streets – there can be a lot of walking involved.
- Client and customer focused.
- A friendly personality, good interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and motivation.
- Willing to learn and develop within the role.
- Collaborative with good communication skills.
- An understanding of the causes of homelessness and its impact.

Since 2003, we've been on a mission to provide comprehensive eye care services to individuals experiencing homelessness across the UK. What We’re Looking For
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. At VCHP, we're on a mission to provide essential support to those experiencing homelessness, and as we move forward, we recognise the importance of having a diverse and skilled board to guide our efforts effectively. We're currently seeking individuals who can bring specific expertise to address the existing skills gaps on our board. We're particularly interested in candidates who possess one or more of the following skills and experiences:
- Board Experience: To provide strategic leadership and governance oversight.
- Digital Skills: To navigate the digital landscape and leverage technology for organisational growth.
- Cybersecurity: To ensure the security and integrity of our digital infrastructure.
- Lived experience of homelessness or experience as a service user: To offer firsthand insights into the needs and challenges of our service users.
- Charity Law and Compliance: To ensure that we operate in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Policy Development: To develop robust policies that align with our mission and support our organizational objectives.

It’s fantastic that you’d like to find out more about volunteering at St Mungo’s. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us at one of our cheer points at the Hackney Half Marathon on Sunday 19 May 2024! We’re National Charity Partners for the race and have a team of 100 amazing runners taking part on the day.
We’re looking for cheer point volunteers who are able to give a few hours of their time on the morning of the race, to help us cheer on our team of runners and show them how much we appreciate all the hard work that has gone into their fundraising and training. Your role will be to make as much noise as possible and give our runners a huge cheer as they pass by!

As an Outreach volunteer you will be assisting outreach workers to support Romanes or Romanian speaking clients face-to-face or over the phone. Other tasks involved in this role will include helping clients access support around immigration, employment, reconnections, and accommodation, to have a good understanding of the Roma communities and have knowledge of the UK EUSS requirements while understanding the rights clients have with pre settled statues and settled statues. For this role it is required that you can speak Romanes or Romanian fluently or to a high level.
In this role, you will be supporting us with some or all of the following tasks:

Young People in supported housing age 16-24 - To provide social and practical support to customers.
Helping towards improving the life chances of people with experience of homelessness. Volunteers empower our customers to identify their existing strengths and skills so they can achieve their goals and aspirations. As a volunteer, you can support customers to achieve their full potential by developing new skills and accessing opportunities
Activities:
- Building an empathic and person-centred relationship with a young person who may be socially isolated or lack confidence.
- Provide opportunities for young people to become more self-confident, maintain contact with important people in their lives and build-up their social networks.
Practical activities could also include:
- Support young people on a weekly basis by accompanying them to appointments
- Escort the young people to nearby shops, outdoor spaces and other places in their local area
- Accompany the young people to areas of interest e.g. the gym, art classes, places of worship etc.
- Help the young people to build their confidence engaging in the wider community
Support for Volunteers:
- To attend four half days of training, receive an induction and have access to any other relevant in house and external training
- Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed
- Volunteers will have a check in with the Volunteering Officer every 3 months to ensure they are happy with the role and to resolve any issues
