As a volunteer assessor, as well as assessing clients, which will include using our debt and benefit online assessment tools, you will also be exploring client’s issues, updating client case records and making appointments.
When you join Citizens Advice, you will be invited to join our comprehensive, in depth and rewarding training programme, you need no prior knowledge of law.
The training
We are looking for people with a friendly manner who are comfortable and confident seeing clients and using IT.
The initial training will last around four weeks and during this time you will complete our online Induction training module, to include, confidentiality, discrimination and Safeguarding.
You will then be trained in using our online debt and benefit assessment tools and given the underpinning knowledge to support you in using them.
Your training will also include, how to explore issues with our clients, case recording skills and having a chance to observe our full advice sessions.
It is vitally important that you are committed, reliable and punctual as much of the work you will undertake is essential to the smooth running of our client sessions, office and charity.
On successful completion of this training and after gaining valuable skills and experience in this role, you would then be able to progress onto the adviser training programme, should you wish.
The commitment
As this is a very challenging role, to become a great Assessor, you will need to be able to commit to at least two sessions a week, which is around ten hours a week, for at least six months.

Aim of Position:
To support the Ask Us Nottinghamshire service to provide high quality, confidential and impartial information, advice and support to families living in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire with children and young people with SEN and Disabilities (SEND) aged 0 to 25. The volunteers support parents/carers, children and young people with issues relating to their education, social and health needs. Support is provided individually and in groups, offering telephone and face-to-face contact in order to improve outcomes for families with a child with SEND.
Sample Activities:
- Listening to parents, children and young people and giving impartial advice and information about the SEN system and sign posting them to other agencies and services where necessary.
- Support parents & young people with paperwork and filling in forms (such as EHCP applications).
- Helping parents prepare for meetings.
- Accompany parents & young people to meetings in schools and in community or local authority venues.
Requirements:
- Some knowledge of the Special Educational Needs system and/or a willingness to learn
- An adequate level of literacy skills in order to be able to help with form filling.

Homeless Support Volunteer
Our Intensive Support Service is working in conjunction with The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council to support clients in a small first stage homeless resettlement unit based in Maidenhead.
This role entails supporting eight men in a resettlement unit, that will provide specialist support to clients with multiple disadvantages and a variety of support needs including substance use, mental health difficulties, rough sleeping, criminal justice contact and self-care issues. The service aims to deliver a high quality accommodation-based support service. During their stay, residents are supported by an Intensive Support Worker to address their needs and work towards independence.
We are looking for passionate, committed and insightful volunteers. You will have a passion for working with clients with complex needs, as well as a dynamic and solution-oriented approach to supporting vulnerable people make positive changes in their lives.
We are seeking volunteers from mid-December – March. The resettlement unit will be open seven days a week, and we are seeking volunteers across the following patterns:
Monday – Friday 7.30am – 1pm
Monday – Friday 4.00pm – 9.30pm
Saturday – Sunday 10.00am – 2.00pm

Employment Support Volunteer
This role entails working alongside a Support Worker to support our clients, who include adult males, ex-offenders and those with SEN (special educational needs). The sessions are carried out in a public setting such as Job centres, libraries and community spaces within the local area. At times the role will also involve undertaking home visits with a member of staff.
The aim is to support users to develop interpersonal skills and self-confidence to enable them to meet the objectives set within their client care plan. The aim is also to empower, motivate and enable clients to enrol and attend courses/ volunteer opportunities with the view for the client to begin to consider their employability skills set, and furthermore be supported to become work ready and make appropriate applications for paid work .
