About Barts Charity

Our Finance and Audit Committee sets the financial strategy that underpins our ability to fund vital healthcare innovation in the NHS. We fund ground-breaking medical research, state-of-the-art hospital equipment and innovative healthcare projects which the NHS could not otherwise afford.

We provide awards totalling £30m each year, making us a nationally significant healthcare funder. Our funding supports the patients of Barts Health NHS Trust (comprising St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London, Mile End, Whipps Cross, Newham and the Nightingale London Hospitals) with funds providing life-saving patient care and well-being support for staff.

We also fund medical research undertaken at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary University London, supporting medical breakthroughs in a wide range of areas including cardiology, trauma, HIV and COVID-19.

About the role

Our Finance and Audit Committee is responsible for the Charity's financial strategy, monitors the annual audit process and oversees compliance and risk management. We are looking for one or two new Committee members who will not also be Trustees, and therefore the time commitment is approx 2-3 days per year. This makes the role ideal for someone who wants to volunteer at a senior level but has other demands on their time, or who has not volunteered at this level before.

About you

We are looking for someone who has an accountancy qualification and experience of some of the following:

  • Working in a senior financial role with understanding of financial strategy
  • Working in a senior financial role with understanding of governance, compliance and risk management
  • Audit practice in an accountancy firm, holding client relationships
  • Explaining financial data and appropriate risk matters to a non-financial audience

We encourage applications from under-represented groups, particularly people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, but also a broad age-range and people living with disabilities. We also welcome applications from people who have not been senior volunteers or non-executives before.

Application is by submitting CV and supporting statement.

Closing date for applications: 11 October 2020
