We’re looking for a volunteer to visit one of our veterans in Hayes.
After joining the General Service Corps on 1945, this member was transferred to the Royal Buffs and was posted to Hong Kong and then Canterbury. Subsequently he returned to his first job as an electrical contract worker until his retirement at 65.
Now at 93, he enjoys his pottery classes and lunch clubs, he listens to the radio, local audio newspapers and audio books.
If you are a very organised person who enjoys administrative work and are available weekly on Fridays or Saturdays to help this veteran go over all his paperwork and decluttering his living room – you could be the volunteer we’re looking for.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. As understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
