ABOUT BONYAN

Bonyan works to implement humanitarian and development projects in Syria. We were established in the city of Aleppo (North Syria) in 2004 and registered in Turkey in 2014. We have worked tirelessly since the start of the devastating war in Syria to support some of the world’s most vulnerable and impoverished communities. Our thematic focus is on education, early recovery, social empowerment and integration, in addition, we implement short-term interventions including food aid and seasonal projects such as winter provision. Since 2004 we have provided humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees in the region seeking to empower and facilitate integration. 

The next chapter for Bonyan is an exciting and challenging one, as we plan to set up operations in the UK allowing us to reach more people, widen our programmes and diversify income streams. We are seeking motivated and skilled individuals to help maximize our impact and help steer the next chapter of Bonyan. 

THE LEGAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A TRUSTEE INCLUDE: 

  • Ensuring Bonyan is carrying out its purpose for the public benefit 
  • Complying with the charity’s governing document and the law 
  • Acting in the charity’s best interests 
  • Managing the charity’s resources responsibly 
  • Acting with reasonable care and skill 
  • Ensuring the charity is accountabl

Trustees contribute by giving firm strategic direction to the charity, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets as well as safeguard the good name and values of the charity. 

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: 

  • Supporting and advise on the mission, goals direction and management of Bonyan 
  • Oversee the setting up of Bonyan’s UK branch/chapter
  • Responsible for the governance of the charity, ensuring that Bonyan acts in accordance with its governing documents and Charity Law
  • Providing relevant reports, materials, and other items associated with Board responsibilities and activities in a timely manner
  • Contributing knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Ensure the charity is financially sustainable and meeting its legal obligations 
  • Attending and contributing to Board meetings 
  • Network on behalf of the charity to raise Bonyan’s profile
  • Trustees must keep the board informed of any work they are doing on behalf of the charity. 
  • Trustees must not make any financial or material gain from the charity, for themselves, their families or their friends. 

  • Trustees must try to foresee and avoid any conflict of interest. Where one arises, the trustee must inform the Chair of Trustees. 

REQUIREMENTS 

Essential skills and experience

  • Commitment and understanding of Bonyan’s vision, values and strategic vision 
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee 
  • Ability to operate at a strategic level – possessing both a strategic vision and thinking 
  • Work with integrity, by behaving in an honest, fair, and ethical manner  
  • Excellent communication skills  
  • Build relationships and liaise with a range of stakeholders 
  • An ability and willingness to work as a part of a team and to support a developing staff team
  • Commitment to openness and respect for diversity in opinions
  • Experience with planning, evaluation, and implementation of a strategic plan, including an ability to focus on long term goals and strategic outcomes.
  • Make a time commitment to actively contribute and participate.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Previously held executive or non-executive board position(s) in the charitable or commercial sector
  • Knowledge of UK charity governance requirements

  • Experience in a charity leadership role


  • Overseas experience for example in humanitarian emergency/crises 
  • Experience in diversifying income including institutional funding  
  • Digital, marketing and/or campaigning skills

COMMITMENT 

Being a trustee is a voluntary, unpaid role with an expected minimum time commitment of approximately 12 days a year. We expect trustees to prepare for and attend Board meetings, 4 times a year. These will take place online until further notice. Additionally, as Bonyan seeks to set up operations in the UK, you may be required to provide ad-hoc support in an administrative, strategy and operational capacity.
