VOLUNTEER MEMBER - INCOME GENERATION, MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
Title: Independent member of the Income Generation, Marketing and Communications Committee
Expected time commitment: 4 - 6 meetings per year with preparatory reading before and after meetings.
Function: Sub-committee of the Boards of Trustees
Line managed by: Chair of the Income Generation, Marketing and Communications Committee
ABOUT THE ROLE
The purpose of the Income Generation, Marketing & Communications Committee is to oversee and support the associated business and development plans on behalf of the Board of Trustees. The role will be to assist the Committee to monitor progress and performance of the Charity’s income generation, marketing and communications activities against CRW strategic objectives and ensure the stewardship and effective management of funds which have been donated, bequeathed and given to CRW for charitable purposes.
We are looking to recruit 3-4 new members from different backgrounds and expertise. This position is a volunteer position and is not remunerated, although reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
We are looking for four exceptional people to join our committee who can help ensure that we can transform the outcomes for people affected by cancer in Wales. We would particularly welcome applications from those with proven experience in the following specialisms:
- Fundraising Management (working at a senior level across different disciplines)
- Fundraising Governance
- Charity Retail
- Digital Marketing
- Brand Development.
This is a challenging but very rewarding role and your contribution could assist Cancer Research Wales and its beneficiaries in a meaningful way.
ABOUT US - CANCER RESEARCH WALES
Every 30 minutes, someone in Wales is diagnosed with cancer and each week, 171 families in Wales lose a loved one to cancer. There are now over 130,000 people in Wales who are living with or have had cancer. This number would almost fill Cardiff’s Principality Stadium twice over. Here at Cancer Research Wales, we are funding some of the world’s leading cancer research. The discoveries our scientists are making in hospitals and universities across Wales are transforming how people with cancer are diagnosed and treated. This ground-breaking research is helping more people survive cancer than ever before.
We do not receive any government funding, so this innovative work is only made possible through our generous supporters and donors.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support and assist the Income generation, marketing and communications team (the team) in the development of annual plans and the overall strategy.
Support and assist the team in developing a marketing and communications plan to increase awareness of CRW.
Oversee and monitor progress of activities against plan, reviewing effectiveness against KPIs and report to the Board on a quarterly basis.
Monitor and ensure that CRW’s corporate image supports and endorses the Brand.
Monitor that the website is Brand compliant.
Signoff on Fundraising Appeals and Campaign plans ensuring that they are Brand compliant and meet the Code of Fundraising Practice.
Working with the Head of Income Generation, Marketing and Communications, keep under review all income sources into CRW, checking that they comply with the Code of Fundraising Practice and other legal and regulatory obligations.
Support the teams to develop and maximise income streams ensuring that they meet related targets.
Consider and review related risks through the review of the CRW Income Generation, Marketing and Communications Risk Register at every meeting.
Review any complaints made in relation to fundraising at each meeting ensuring that we comply with the CRW Complaints Policy.
Recent and relevant Fundraising, Marketing and Communications experience - Required
Interest and knowledge of the challenges faced by charities - Required
Good listening skills and the ability to ask challenging questions - Required
Experience of serving in a non-Executive/Trustee role - Desirable
Experience of risk governance - Desirable
Knowledge of fundraising governance - Desirable
Knowledge of Cancer Research Wales and its work - Desirable
Awareness of good project management - Desirable

ROLE EXPECTATIONS - be willing to:
Attend at least four meetings per year, with possible ad hoc meetings as necessary.
Review agenda papers in advance of meetings and minutes after meetings.
Serve a three-year term, with the possibility of it being extended for a further period of up to three years, provided the criteria for membership of the Committee continue to be met.
This is a voluntary role. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid in line with the charity’s expenses policy.

Welcome Programme introducing you to the charity and the role of the Income Generation, Marketing and Communications Committee.
Introductory meetings with key members of charity staff who regularly attend the Committee to present papers.
