Relief volunteer Chef [email protected]  

Community Activities Project Ealing (CAPE) was founded 21 years ago, to meet the needs of individuals living with mental health needs in the local community. Our founding service was a safe place in the form of a Café where people could meet and take up peer support. This service continues to this day. However, over the years we have recognised that we are working with a wide range of needs that have an impact on an individual’s mental health and well-being, so we have developed and continue to develop a suite of services to respond to a wide range of needs. We focus on the individual not just the diagnosis, which encourages us to recognise that each person is different and has complex needs and so our response needs to be multi-layered.

CAPE is a growing and thriving charity. We believe in serving our local community, creating a positive experience for our customers. As a volunteer you will be joining a small dedicated team, supporting and endorsing our values and working alongside our client volunteers to provide hot meals and snacks  


We are seeking a volunteer chef/cook who can cover for our chef during holidays (6 weeks per annum) and periods of sickness. We are open 3 days per week at our Recovery point Acton.

If you have the following skills  

   Extensive food knowledge with the ability to cook and present fresh food to a consistently high standard.

   Cooking and preparation of high-quality meals with the team to serve 50 hot meals a day, plus snacks and beverages.

   Deputise for the Catering Coordinator in her absence, motivating and leading the team of volunteers and work placements.

   Provide financial costings for planned menus in line with budgets when required.

   Ensure financial and cash handling procedures are complied with.

   Ensure customers are served promptly and efficiently.

   Implement Health and Safety legislation in line with CAPE's policies always.

   Consistently and actively apply good housekeeping principles, such as turning off lights and equipment when not in use, to contribute to reduce utility costs. Ensure the Kitchen and Cafe areas are always cleaned and tidy, creating an inviting environment for customers.


Essential / Desirable Skills and aptitude for the role;

   Experience of working as a Chef/ Cook using fresh ingredients.

   Self-motivated, using own initiative, desire to learn and achieve.

   Ability to motivate others.

   Hold a Certificate in Food Hygiene or a Level 1 or 2 NVQ in catering Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety or equivalents is desirable.

   Health & Safety awareness required.

   Customer care/service awareness required.

   Good numeric and literacy skills required.

   Experience of handling money required.

   Experience of working with people with mental health needs and those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder desirable
