Job Description

Our award-winning mentoring programme has proven impact. It has been replicated around the UK.

Chance UK is offering you the fantastic opportunity to become a mentor to a child between the age of 5-12 who needs you, for 12 months. You could be the mentor you wanted or had when you were a child.

Our Mission: Chance UK is an early intervention organisation that supports children experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The children that we work with are at risk of educational exclusion, anti-social and/or criminal behaviour in adolescence and early adult life.

We empower children to develop their skills, confidence and life aspirations through a nine or twelve month mentoring programme.

Our Values:

  • We are passionate: championing early support that is transformative for children and families
  • We are inclusive: embracing the diversity of everyone that we work with
  • We are child-centred: listening to children’s best hopes to bring out the best in them and provide a unique experience
  • We are solution focused: enabling children and their families to use their strengths to achieve their own goals
  • We are collaborative: working in partnership with other services to maximise our impact and embed sustainable changes
  • We are forward thinking: creatively looking at ways of adapting and growing our programmes, whilst continuing to deliver best practice

About you: We are looking for volunteers over the age of 18 who would like the chance to work with children based in Islington & Lambeth. It wouldn’t take much of your time, just 2-4, once a week, for 12 months.

In this time you would have the chance to plan fun sessions such as visiting a museum or even learning new skills such as swimming. This is your opportunity to build a child's self-confidence and watch them grow.

Don't worry, you won’t doing this alone! You will be supported by a supervisor who you would meet once a month. They will be there to guide you on your journey and help you if you have concerns. You would also receive comprehensive training accompanied by a manual to prepare for you mentoring.

Every child is matched with a mentor that is right for them. We don’t just match you with any child, we will try to match you with a child that shares the same interest as you. We can build on the interests and learn new skills together.

All volunteers must be 18 and over.

You do not need any qualifications or even prior experience working with children however it helps if you do.

We will require all volunteers to go through an enhanced background check.

All volunteers are required to attend all training sessions, while also ensuring they are able to commit for the full duration of 12 months.

Volunteers must be able to meet up with their mentee every week, however we do take personal holiday into consideration.

Volunteers will be reimbursed, within a limit of £30 for activities and £40 for travel, monthly.
