Human Rights Volunteer Roles in Channel Islands

Hekima is a small organization in Tanzania that promotes children rights, and youth through nurturing that enables children, families and communities in ending Violence Against Children (VAC). Hekima achieves this through community accountable where children and young youth demand their rights; strengthening child protection and participation systems and structures.

PROGRAMME SUPPORT

• We are looking for a Programme Support Volunteer to understand the organization and its programs; review the current strategic plan; prepare meetings with the team; prepare a logical framework; and, elp create a theory of change.
• Volunteer 4-6 hours per week for 3-4 weeks.

We are recruiting several board member roles including Secretary and Treasurer and general Non-Executive Director. All board members share these responsibilities and requirements:

~ Provide governance oversight over our legal and financial duties as a Community Interest Company. 

 ~Guide OSN staff, team leaders and contractors, to deliver our mission and strategy. 

For some responsibilities on the Board i.e.the legal, finance and fundraising, will require a degree of management of our delivery due to these being underdeveloped areas within the organisation.

PROFILE

We are looking for ONE suitably qualified and motivated International Board Members with the following competencies:

-Governance in other international organisations

To succeed in this role you will have a proven track record in either a senior executive management or governance role within a commercial or non-profit international organisation. Experience in the non-profit sector is welcomed but not essential.

Essential global governance skills:

-Global Perspective: Demonstrates understanding of global trends, including Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) trends relevant to the organization's mission. These trends encompass a wide range of topics including climate change mitigation, promoting workforce and board equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), human rights and good governance critical to ensuring the responsible development and ethical use and transparency of artificial intelligence technology.

-Strategic leadership and execution: Demonstrated experience of successfully implementing organizational strategies in organizations of similar scale and complexity as Amnesty International. Proven track record of ensuring alignment between Board and management for optimal organisational performance, ideally in a Trustee, Board member or senior leadership role.

-Legal and regulatory compliance: Proficient in ensuring the organization's adherence to legal requirements. Experience of working with international organisations to implement policies and standards needed to strengthen governance and accountability.

-Risk management: Comprehensive grasp of the financial, operational and ESG risks linked to organizations with a presence in multiple locations.

WHAT'S INVOLVED?

The International Board is made up of nine members including the International Treasurer, who are elected to office for a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms by the Global Assembly, Amnesty International's highest governing body.

As an International Board member you will play a key role in setting and monitoring the strategic direction of Amnesty International and ensuring the organization lives up to its shared vision, aims, and values.

We are looking for online English teachers to join our vibrant team! 

HBC offers online English classes using Zoom on Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-1pm UK time. Classes run for about 45 minutes, offering L0- literacy, L1-Beginner, L2- Elementary and L3- Intermediate. We also do some one-one literacy tutoring. The classes start on the hour. Some of our teachers teach multiple classes and some only teach one depending on their availability. As an online English teacher, your responsibilities will include preparing and delivering lessons to improve students' reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Job description

The Plateful Café works to relieve poverty amongst refugees in Lewisham. As a small charity, it is important to share information and updates through our communications and social media content, to help us fundraise and grow. 

What will you be doing?

• Leading on one of our social media channels (currently Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn)
• Producing occasional blog posts (minimum one per quarter except LinkedIn lead who will do one per month) on topics related to Plateful Café including research and interviews. 
• Recording social media analytics on a weekly basis
• Identifying potential content and opportunities
• Adding ideas to the content planner
• Postings and scheduling content
• Attendance at team catch-ups virtually/phone 
• Ad-hoc attendance at events and markets
• Other duties in line with the role description

Jail Time Records is a non profit record label producing the music of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists from prisons in Cameroon and Burkina Faso. We built the first recording studio inside an African prison in the Central Prison of Douala-Cameroon. Jail Time Records believes that art and creativity can be used as powerful instruments for change, integration and rehabilitation. Incarcerated populations are amongst the most marginalised communities worldwide, and particularly in Africa. The punitive justice system in place does little to help those incarcerated reintegrate into society, and society sees incarceration as a sign of stigma and taboo. In Cameroon's prisons rehabilitation programs are almost inexistent.

We bring cultural activities and programs to one of the most marginalised communities in Cameroon and Burkina Faso, the incarcerated population. Through music and visual arts we stimulate inmates and former inmates to engage positively, find ways to express themselves non violently, and find hope and trust in new ways of being. Through the work of the prisoners that we publish and promote, we help transform the way society sees incarceration.

GRANT WRITER

• Help identify and apply for grants and funds that will help Jail Time Records' sustainability. There is potential for this role to become a full-time paid position in the future.
• Volunteer 2-3 hours per week for 3-5 months

Wootlab Foundation tackle four challenges. These are youth unemployment, gender disparities in education, the digital skills gap and the limited opportunities present for economic growth. They do this by implementing digital upskilling and green entrepreneurship initiatives to empower unemployed youth, promoting inclusive education through digital literacy interventions to overcome gender barriers, developing comprehensive digital upskilling programs to bridge the skills gap, and leveraging technology-driven entrepreneurship to stimulate economic growth and job creation.

FUNDRAISING

• We are looking for a Fundraising Volunteer to sourcing funds and implement strategies for resource acquisition. This role requires a dynamic individual with a proven track record in fundraising, grant writing, and partnership development.
• Volunteer 7-9 hours per week for 1-2 months.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

• Create visually appealing infographics, website banners and social media graphics in line with the strong visual language and identity of Jail Time Records and work on the layout of our new website.
• Volunteer 2-3 hours per week for 3-5 months.

Bath Welcomes Refugees (BWR) is seeking a Volunteer who will coordinate the monthly social gathering we hold for Ukrainian refugees.   The aims are to offer friendship and support, the opportunity for people who are potentially isolated to come together and to signpost people to services and activities.  Volunteers can also help with wider community integration, helping with language development, cultural exchange, local knowledge, etc. 

Who we are:

BWR harnesses the goodwill of the community in welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers to thrive in their new community.  BWR is a small inclusive charity. Volunteer-led and non-partisan, we help refugee families out of desperate circumstances and into a promising future. Our volunteers provide hands-on support with English-language teaching, resettlement support, helping with our creche and at social events. We also have volunteers who help with employability, DIY, gardening, fundraising and more.

Expectations for this volunteer role include:

• Liaising with volunteers and planning the volunteer rota for sessions, in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator.

• Liaising with the management of the premises as required.

• Unlocking and locking up the premises and overseeing setting up at the beginning of sessions and clearing up at the end. 

• Liaising with representatives of the Ukrainian community to plan activities and publicise events.

• Overseeing the provision of drinks, snacks, cooking ingredients and materials which may be required (e.g. for games or crafts). 

• Allocating volunteers to specific roles or tasks as required (e.g. kitchen, supervising activities with children, registering arrivals).

• Coordinating and supporting volunteers during sessions.

Your skills and experience:

• Understanding of refugee issues

• Sensitivity to other cultures

• Experience of coordinating team work and working within a team

Time commitment:.

• Sessions run on Saturdays from 12pm to 2pm monthly - time commitment from 11.30am to 2.30pm for setting up and closing down. 

• 2 or 3 additional hours monthly liaising with volunteers; contacting leaders of the Ukrainian group 

• Full day Induction Training session and full day First Aid training

• There is scope for expanding the role to include activities beyond this event, if you have a little more time to offer

Responsibilities:

Executive Director Assistance

▪ Provide direct support to Executive Director to ensure IWI meets organisational goals and targets;

Faith to Faithless are launching a brand new helpline for apostates in the summer of 2023, for people leaving high-control religions, and we’re looking for committed, compassionate volunteers to join us. 

You will be a motivated, dedicated, and organised person with great communication skills, who is enthusiastic about volunteering your time and skills to support individuals leaving high-control religions (also known as apostates). You will have lived experience or understanding of the issues apostates face, and a kind and empathic approach to working with others.

We’ll train you to handle calls with confidence, and you’ll be getting valuable experience in supporting service users with multifaceted needs. This is a volunteering role where you can develop your interpersonal skills, help members of our community that need it most, and make a real difference in their lives by helping them to get back on track to living happy, purposeful lives without religion.

Key Tasks and Activities

• To respond quickly and efficiently to calls requesting help, providing a listening service, signposting and information to people who have experienced victimisation due to leaving their religion.
• To deliver work which adheres to high service standards, ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures.
• To keep and maintain accurate and confidential records of all work undertaken.
• To identify and maintain appropriate boundaries for all callers and recognise when and where to signpost callers for further help/information as appropriate with appropriate support from the apostate services manager
• To proactively continue to develop appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skills through regular reading of information and attending training courses.
• To support the training of helpline volunteers as required.
• To attend supervision, meetings and appraisals.
• To undertake any other appropriate duties as requested by the ASM
