Job description

Content is king – and with our website being the ‘front door’ to CLIC Sargent we’re on a mission to make sure it contains the key expert information young people have told us they need. We want to grow our content team and we’ve developed a new vital role for a volunteer to work specifically on writing content for young people with cancer. You’ll be based within our Brand and Communications team, and work closely with our Information Service Manager, video, digital community teams and young people’s workers to write brand content that engages and informs.  



What you’ll be doing


  • Writing 26 high priority articles on a variety of topics, from money to relationships, using source material suggested
  • Writing articles in line with best practice for writing for websites
  • Working closely with our young people’s workers and digital communities officers content, and test it with young people. They’re based all over the UK, so this will be at a distance, and from your own home
  • Consulting with young people to ensure their views and preferences are reflected in what you write
  • Following our brand guidelines to make sure the content you write is in CLIC Sargent’s voice
  • Consistently recording source information in line with CLIC Sargent’s information development process
  • Uploading articles to the website on Wordpress, once they’ve been signed off by the Information Manager -  we’ll give you training on this
  • Provide feedback throughout to help us improve how we can support volunteers doing this role in the future


About you:

You will have experience in writing and optimizing information web content, and know how to use web content systems (ideally Wordpress)

You’ll need an excellent grasp of English grammar and spelling and to be able to follow a brand style guide. Being a whizz at search engine optimization (SEO) would be an advantage, but not vital   

You’ll be talking to a variety of people – including young people aged 16-24 with cancer- to inform and test content during development, so you need to able to get on with a range of people and handle conversations sensitively

You will have a practical and pragmatic approach to finding out information to support those reaching out to contact us for support, and families and loved ones

You’ll understand the importance good information plays in empowering people, and be committed to writing accurate and timely content to for young people

You’ll know yourself well and have a good awareness about when to ask for support from staff, both on the practical nature of the role and in terms of supporting your own wellbeing

  • Support from a dedicated volunteer manager and regular check ins
  • You’ll be contributing to the quality of the service we are able to provide for children and young people diagnosed with cancer
