About Durham Students’ Union
Durham Students’ Union was created by students in 1899 to bring students from across the university together.
We exist so that students can make Durham University better and fairer together, acting as the champion for every Durham student.
We support over 250+ student societies which are run by students to cater to a diverse array of interests. We also lobby and campaign on important issues and elect, train, and guide officers who create the changes they and their peers want at all levels of the university.
We have developed our new strategy to tackle the issues that affect our members. We have prioritised complex long-term goals that will bring benefits to our student’s academic, social, and mental well-being.
We have proudly worked on decolonisation and mental health support and now have a strategic focus set on housing/accommodation, induction, and access — whilst continuing to students provide a high level of service for students.
About the roles
We currently have a strong level of expertise at the staff level within the Union and have made it a positive place to work. Our board is welcoming and provides an effective challenge and level of scrutiny for our executive team.
We want your help to ensure we stay on a positive trajectory, whilst ensuring our new strategy and developments for our long-term financial and commercial sustainability.

Geoscientist is the quarterly Fellowship magazine of the Geological Society of London. It features a vibrant mix of science, opinion, news and more, and serves as a resource to the community, with articles that aim to stimulate thinking within and across fields of expertise.
Geoscientist is seeking an Editor-in-Chief to lead the editorial team from June 2024, and to help shape and deliver the magazine content over the next five years.
The Editor-in-Chief role is voluntary and requires a typical commitment of a day (~8 hours) per month. The role is fully remote, with contributions primarily achieved via email, with occasional meetings (in person or online) to liaise with the Editorial Team and Editorial Advisory Panel, review the magazine, and develop ideas for content. Additionally, at each Annual General Meeting of the Society, the Editor-in-Chief will report to the Fellows regarding the previous calendar year’s performance of Geoscientist.
Key responsibilities
1. Ensure compliance with the Terms of Reference of Geoscientist (available at www.geoscientist.online/about/)
The Terms of Reference of Geoscientist define the magazine’s editorial independence, content, responsibilities, etc. It is a key aspect of the role of the Editor-in-Chief to ensure compliance with these Terms of Reference by the Executive Editor and Editor(s) and, if appropriate, by the Society.
2. Assist, support and advise the Executive Editor and Editor(s) on magazine content.
Where there are disagreements amongst the Editorial Advisory Panel concerning suitability of major articles, the Editor-in-Chief will resolve such matters if not resolvable through the Executive Editor. Geoscientist provides a forum for Fellows to offer their views and opinions. It is the role of the Executive Editor, Editor(s), and the Editor(s)-in-Chief to ensure that content is suitable for the Society’s magazine, in particular with respect to scientific content and external reputation of the Society, effectively communicated and legally compliant. This is particularly the case in respect of areas of sensitive and/or controversial matters and with respect to legal compliance. The Editor-in-Chief has a particular responsibility in respect of ‘challenging’ content in ensuring that it is appropriate, timely, etc. Although legal advice can be called upon to assist in this decision, it is likely that the mere question of legal compliance would normally suggest that the content should be excluded.
3. Ultimate responsibility for content, including legal compliance.
The Editor-in-Chief reviews the intended content of forthcoming issues. In the case of any disagreements regarding content, the Editor-in-Chief has the final decision.
The Editor-in Chief shall comply with the professional principles laid out in the National Union of Journalist’s published Code of Conduct, and the Society’s Code of Conduct and Code of Publishing Ethics.
Selection criteria
1. Able to fulfil all aspects of the role.
2. A broad knowledge of the Society, for instance gained as a past member of Council or Officer of the Society.
3. Experience in scientific publishing (for example, as an Editorial Advisory Panel member, journal Editor, past member of the Publications and Information Committee), with an understanding of the publishing process and landscape.
4. Of high repute with an international network of expert colleagues in the field.
5. Broad expertise in the geosciences.
6. Enthusiastic Geoscientist magazine advocate.
7. A historical appreciation of Geoscientist and its importance to the Society, but offering a fresh perspective.
8. Ideas for new development initiatives and opportunities to improve the quality of the magazine.
9. Geological Society of London Fellow or willingness to become one.
