Key responsibilities:
- Strategic leadership and vision: Guide the organisation with a strategic vision, aligning the board and staff's efforts with the mission. Lead the development and review of long-term strategies to ensure responsiveness to community needs and adaptability to the changing environment.
- Governance and oversight: Ensure effective governance, oversee board operations, and ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and functional responsibilities. Monitor financial performance and adherence to non-profit management best practices.
- Resource mobilisation: Support and participate in fundraising strategies, leveraging networks, and engaging with donors and stakeholders to secure necessary resources for the organisation's work.
- Building and leading the board: Ensure the board comprises members with diverse skills and perspectives. Lead recruitment, orientation, and training of board members and facilitate effective meetings and discussions, ensuring productive governance to advance the purpose and values of the organization.
- CEO support and evaluation: Support and maintain a constructive relationship with the CEO, creating a positive and strong working relationship to jointly set and achieve appropriate targets, staying in regular contact and acting as a sounding board to discuss strategic or staffing issues - coaching, supporting and challenging as necessary. Our publicity team leaders have the important role of supporting a wider team of publicity volunteers. What we do
We help everyone use parks and their transformative health and wellbeing benefits. DEFRA estimates that if everyone spent time in parks, the NHS could save £2.1 billion a year, however often the people who could benefit most from using parks, do not.
We work with under-served communities to help them spend time in green space and we support small groups and community organisations to do the same. From supporting people with complex mental health needs to connect with nature and build community, to identifying and removing physical barriers to park access, we work to make sure parks fulfil their potential as free to use, community assets.
The role
As a Trustee with a communications background, you will take the lead at board level, whilst ensuring that the collective responsibility of the Trustees for the oversight and support of marketing and communications goals and activities.
The main responsibilities of a Trustee is to:
- oversee the strategic direction of the charity as it scales to meet demand, and support the CEO in managing this growth;
- use their expertise to help guide the process;
- ensure the organisation works within the law and in line with its governing document and policies;
- keep informed about the activities of the charity in order to maintain effective oversight;

We have completed a skills audit of our existing trustee and staff team and we are looking to build experience and knowledge of marketing and communications practice.
At present, we do not have an in-house communication role. We outsource digital marketing to an agency and buy in support for campaigns when funding allows. What We Offer:

We have two volunteer houses that can host up to nine people where long-term volunteers are accommodated. Some volunteers choose to rent their own accommodation. In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the volunteer houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the volunteer houses are full, this would allow us to offer a volunteering opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to join us on the ground and immerse themselves in our work. Your participation could take on many forms, from support in the education programs to activities in the kindergarten to the delivery of workshops and expeditions with the Youth Scouts – we look forward to hearing your ideas on how best to apply your skills in this context. The mission of Colchester Foodbank is to “prevent or relieve poverty in Colchester and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively by providing emergency food supplies”.
Over the last few years the food bank has grown substantially in response to rising demand, and last year provided 20,000 food parcels to adults and children through 11 satellites in and around Colchester. In addition, it signposts clients to specialist agencies who may be able to help with specific problems.

Colchester Foodbank actively drives those campaigns locally.
As a Trustee you will play a vital role by ensuring that we are meeting the demand for our services, providing help and support to people in crisis in the local community as well as providing strategic direction for the charity.
Key tasks

A bit about this role
Our publicity team leaders have the important role of supporting a wider team of publicity volunteers. As a team our publicity volunteers collectively keep members of the public informed of the vital and varied ways we help our feline friends in need. Raising awareness is crucial to us being able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us. A higher profile can help raise funds, raise awareness of adopting a cat, promote neutering and encourage as many people as possible to learn about feline welfare.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Communicating with others including newsletter, social networking and website volunteers
- Advising others on the content of newsletters and web posts
- Interacting with others to make sure information is positive, accurate and consistent
- Liaising with your volunteer group and our National Cat Centre to organise media campaigns
- Responding to local media requests if required

Time expectation
Our publicity team leaders usually spend 3 to 4 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
