Job description

Our goal at Temwa is to harness the power of bringing communities together. We partner with communities in Malawi, empowering local people to end poverty and transform their own futures. We inspire local communities in the UK to help bring about this change. 

From sharing stories of hope to promoting our stand-out events (including wrestling challenges and Totally Toto Africa), you will help to use our voice to engage our supporters and widen our reach in order to achieve our fundraising goals. Our content aims to mobilise individuals, groups and whole communities into action, providing ways to raise, give, volunteer or partner with us to transform lives. 

Location: Temwa UK offices, Portland Square, central Bristol

Expected interview dates: w/c 19th August

Work pattern: we ask for a commitment of two days per week, for six months. Exact working days will be agreed between the intern and their line manager; we are flexible and work to accommodate existing commitments as much as possible. As an events focused role, there will be some evening and weekend work with appropriate time-off given back following the event. 

This is a voluntary internship, with reasonable travel and lunch expenses covered.

About Temwa

When communities come together. Temwa means ‘love, within a community,’ in the language of Tumbuka. We are Bristol based charity committed to empowering remote African communities to end poverty and transform their own futures. 

We know that without the central involvement of the communities in a project we cannot do anything that lasts. Temwa draws on 16 years working with remote communities in Malawi to understand that many of the challenges faced by poor rural communities are linked and mutually reinforcing. To make a lasting change, we partner with the communities and work through local structures to tackle the various causes of poverty simultaneously, not just symptoms. 

We have a highly skilled team in Malawi implementing this work, based out of two offices in the Northern Region. Our UK office, based in Bristol, comprises a small fundraising and operations team of six staff, 3-5 volunteer interns and a wider family of volunteers and supporters, committed to achieving this goal. 

Internship Overview

As a Communication Intern, you will be passionate about seeing Temwa grow in strength and reach. Supported by the Communications and Fundraising Team, you will feel confident drafting copy, identifying new stories and using digital and print marketing to spark interest, engagement and action to help us reach our goal. 

This is a great opportunity to gain invaluable experience of working across both the charity and communications and marketing sectors gaining public relation skills, developing your writing and covering and promoting large-scale events. As a key member of the team, you’ll have real responsibilities leading on particular areas and supporting the internal and external communications of Temwa. You will be able to apply your existing skills and experience to our organisational mission, whilst developing your skill set and enhancing your CV.

What you will do..

  • Draft social media posts and case stories

  • Support with keeping the website updated

  • Help promote events through flyering and digital marketing

  • Assist the Deputy Fundraising Manager in brand development

  • Keep the media stock up to date

Help achieve our wider goals by:

  • Ensuring all new contacts are added to the organisational database, and existing ones are kept up-to-date

  • Supporting the rest of the team with ad-hoc tasks when necessary, including live event support

Who we are looking for...


  • Interest in international development, with a passion for and belief in Temwa’s objectives

  • Creative and strong communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills

  • Reliable, proactive and self-motivated attitude, with the ability to take the initiative and work independently when needed

  • Strong all-round ICT skills, with proficiency using MS Office and web-based applications

  • Well-organised approach to work with excellent time management, with experience of working to tight deadlines

  • Good knowledge and use of social media platforms 


  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in communications and marketing

  • Graphic design and photography skills

  • Interest in communications and social media trends

  • Experience in website development, especially Wordpress

  • Experience of working or volunteering with a charity or NGO
