Job description

Studies have shown that 1 in 4 eleven-year-olds cannot read or write properly and almost 50% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds leave Primary School unable to read properly. This is where the Doorstep Library comes in.

Doorstep Library is a literacy charity that believes in the power of words to take children places, not just in their imagination, but in their lives. We want to see a world where all children can thrive in homes in which books are celebrated and a love of reading is embraced.

We recruit and train volunteers to go into some of the most disadvantaged areas in London to help introduce young children (0-11 years old) to the pleasure of reading. Other literacy charities get books into homes; Doorstep Library's unique home-based services means we are there in person, finding the most appropriate books for every child we visit and building a relationship with the whole family. Our projects not only improve literacy and confidence in children, but they increase family wellbeing and bonding through the joy of sharing stories.

This kind of tailored support enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in life.

We run projects on MondayTuesday and Thursday afternoons in estates across Hammersmith and Fulham.

The areas include:

  • Parsons Green
  • East Acton
  • Hammersmith
  • Fulham Broadway
  • Shepherd's Bush

Apply now to attend one of our monthly Information Sessions to find out if volunteering with Doorstep is the right move for you! Applicants must be 18 and over.
