Job Description

Post:              Volunteer Fundraiser (to join sub group of Steering Committee)

Hours:           Flexible

Reports To:   Sarah Bentley, Project Manager

Overview

Made In Hackney is a pioneering educational eco-community kitchen. Nestled underneath not-for-profit health food shop Food For All, we teach vital cooking, composting and food growing skills that are good for people and planet.  In our classes we draw people's attention to the much overlooked reality of, 'without a healthy planet, how can we be healthy people?' We therefore teach people in fun and inspiring ways healthy eating and lifestyle skills alongside environmental best practice.

Our courses are attended by local charities, housing associations, support groups and community groups most in need of developing food skills. On Sunday’s we run pay-by-donation Community Classes open to anyone, and led by local volunteers. We also run an enterprise arm of the charity which delivers Masterclasses on a ticket only basis for members of the public, as well as corporate and catering events. Over 750 participants over the last year have attended classes and reported back positive changes.  

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a Fundraising Sub Group of the Steering Committee.

The Fundraising Group develops and implements fundraising strategies and actions according to Made in Hackney's key long term goals, incorporating varied sources of funding.

You can become involved in one or several of areas including:

  1. Development of a medium term fundraising plan
  2. Designing and writing applications to relevant sources for funding (including housing associations,Trusts & Foundations, statutory sources and Lottery funds)
  3. On-going support to staff in developing effective fundraising practices.

Desired Experience

1. Excellent Writing Skills

2. Genuine interest and/or related experience in fundraising.

3. Transferable skills in one or more areas of fund-raising, marketing, communications, public relations, promotion, stakeholder relations, etc.

4. Time and energy to contribute as a member and volunteer of the Fundraising sub committee 

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a cross section of the corporate, social enterprise and charity sectors, as well as education and/or community health.

A detailed understanding of, and passion for the health and environmental issues underpinning Made In Hackneys food policy (local, seasonal, organic, planet based) and mission statement is essential.

Experience/knowledge of food growing and environmental issues preferred.

The Made In Hackney Local Food Kitchen is a project of the independently run, UK arm of international humanitarian relief charity AMURT set up in India in 1965. AMURT works in over 80 countries and presently has grassroots relief teams and development projects in over 30 countries. Amurt UK’s two other projects are Food For All, a not-for-profit health food shop which has served the community of Hackney with affordable health products and herbs since 1976  and a Homeless Feeding Program which involves volunteers cooking and distributing hot meals to homeless people in central London.
