Job description

Zanzibar....a paradise island of white sandy beaches, azure sky and sea, coral reefs, famous for exotic spices and endless sunsets. Right? Sadly, for the 1.5 million people who live in Zanzibar, the daily struggle of life is a very different experience to the holiday brochure ideal.  For thousands, basic medical care that we take for granted and which can easily prevent early death is denied, due to lack of money, lack of trained staff and education of staff and patients. Health Improvement Project Zanzibar (HIPZ) is committed to working with the Zanzibari Ministry of Health to change this permanently. We are a small and highly effective charity that wants every person in Zanzibar to have access to the healthcare that they need. Working with Zanzibaris from grassroots to the Government, HIPZ is embedded in every level of the health system in Zanzibar as the positive catalyst for change. We run two District Hospitals in partnership with the Zanzibar Ministry of Health, with clinics covering the provision of a full primary care service, as well as pioneering programmes focusing on mental health, and maternal and infant health. Since our inception and despite being run primarily by volunteers in the UK, we have raised over £2m from grants, gifts and major donors, alongside a small number of loyal individual donors and key events. To date, this has enabled us to continue to grow and reach more of the Zanzibari population.

As we enter into a new and exciting growth phase for the charity, we are seeking additional Trustees to bring new ideas, new approaches and new skills to bolster our current Board capabilities. This is where you come in! We are looking to recruit three new trustees, in particular those with Finance, Global Health or Charity Governance experience. 

HIPZ welcomes people who share our values and have some of the skills, experience and personal qualities needed to play their part on our Board of Trustees. The position of Trustee carries legal duties and responsibilities and is a voluntary role, so we look for people who are passionate about, and committed to, the aims of our charity. Our Trustees have overall responsibility for the strategic, financial, operational, medical and commercial management of the charity.  They set the direction of the charity, make decisions on how to use our funds and monitor the progress we’re making towards our aims. HIPZ Trustees are also hands-on: whether that’s running Task and Finish groups and committees; helping to write the annual report; or offering advice to the staff team.
