Job description

Heart of Kent Hospice, established in 1991, provides exceptional care for people with terminal illnesses in Maidstone, Aylesford, Tonbridge, Malling and surrounding areas. The Hospice has built an excellent reputation within the local community for the quality of our care which has been further endorsed by the Care Quality Commission who have given the Hospice an overall rating of Outstanding.

The Hospice is seeking to appoint a confident, inspiring Chair of Trustees. 

 

Role summary

The Chair will lead the Board of Trustees, who are also directors of the Hospice, to determine the overall direction and development of the Hospice through good governance and clear strategic planning, alongside commitment to our organisation values.

The Chair will provide leadership and direction to the Board to take the Hospice forward, building of the success of recent developments and initiatives; and enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for governance and ensure its effectiveness. The Chair will establish a strong, supportive relationship with the Chief Executive and will ensure that the values of the Hospice underpin all of the Board's decisions and activities.

In addition to the above statutory duties, the Chair and Trustees should use any specific knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve focusing on key issues and providing advice and guidance requested by the Board on issues and initiatives relevant to the area of the Hospice's work in which the Trustee has special expertise.

 

Person description

The Hospice is looking for an excellent communicator with strong leadership and strategic skills who has senior executive/non-executive experience and a proven ability to build good relationships and networks.

The Chair will be fundamental to the development and sustainability of the Hospice which delivers tailored and individualised care to each patient and their family, free of charge, within their own home or in the Hospice to improve their quality of life.

The Chair will lead a professional board supporting a passionate and dedicated team.

 

Time commitment

  • Main Board, quarterly, approx. 2 hours
  • One Committee, quarterly, approx. 2 hours
  • Support to CEO
  • One away day per annum
  • Ad hoc attendance at other events
