Job description

High Trees was born of the local community 23 years ago, through collective community action to save the old library based in Tulse Hill, turning it into a Community Development Trust. Today, High Trees has grown significantly and is a well-regarded and trusted community anchor in Lambeth, delivering and leading on a range of integrated services to connect people and communities to strengthen skills and build stronger voices.

We are looking for two Trustees to join our active, engaged board to help ensure that the organisation continues to meet its strategic objectives, stays true to its vision and values and ensures that it continues to meet the requirements set out by the charity commission.

As a Board member you will be expected to attend a quarterly board meeting, with further opportunities to join a sub-committee which also meets quarterly and offer support based on your outside expertise. Sub-committees include a Peoples Subcommittee and a Finance subcommitee and other temporary subcommittees are set up from time to time to oversee particular areas of work. All meetings normally take place in the evening from 6.00pm and lasts about 1.5 hrs. The charity has a staff base of approximately 30, including a strong leadership team, and the role of Trustee is not an operational one.

The responsibilities of the board include setting the strategic direction of the charity, to provide independent and objective challenge and encouragement to the charity’s leadership, to monitor performance against internal and external objectives and to ensure the charity is delivering its charitable purpose and making best use of its resources.

High Trees is proud that its board is representative of the communities it serves, and that this balance continues is very important to us. We value diversity of experience and diversity of voice on our board, and if you are passionate about the work of High Trees, and feel you could contribute your skills, we would like to hear from you. We particularly welcome applications from those living locally or who have used our services, or the services of a similar organisation, but are also interested in those who may simply wish to contribute their professional skills to the charity. There is no expectation that you would have served on a board previously.
