Human Resources Volunteer Roles
The Kennedy Memorial Trust is seeking TWO new Trustees to join its Board from October 2024, one with university academic experience and one with operational management experience, to succeed Trustees who have reached the end of their terms of office.
The Kenned Memorial Trust funds exceptional UK students to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Set up as a ‘living memorial’ to President Kennedy following his assassination, the Trust has funded some 600 Kennedy Scholars since the first cohort departed in 1966. The strong trustee board is chaired by Sir Mark Walport.
The specific experience and skills we are seeking to recruit in these two roles are:
·Trustee 1: Current or recent experience as a an academic in a UK university, with insight into the landscape of postgraduate opportunities, outreach and selection, and good practice in supporting student welfare.
·Trustee 2: Experience and skills in operational management, covering issues such as IT, finance and HR systems, project oversight and risk management.
We are keen to strengthen the diversity of the Board and – reflecting the UK basis of the charity - hope to recruit at least one Trustee who lives or works in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The Trust
The Kennedy Memorial Trust funds exceptional UK students to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Set up as a ‘living memorial’ to President Kennedy following his assassination, the Trust has funded some 600 Kennedy Scholars since the first cohort departed in 1966.
The Trust prides itself on the talent and service of the candidates it selects. Following their time at Harvard or MIT, scholars have gone on to play leading roles in the UK and across the world, in public service, the law, science/technology, health, education, business, charities, the arts and media. Alumni of the programme include Lady Mary Arden (Supreme Court Justice from 2018 to 2022), Lord Mervyn King (Bank of England Governor from 2003 to 2013). David Miliband (ex Foreign Secretary, now CEO of the International Rescue Committee), Dame Kate Bingham (Chair of the UK Government's Vaccine Taskforce), Zanny Minton Beddoes (Editor-in-Chief, The Economist), Sir Richard Moore (Chief of MI6) and Matt Clifford (CEO of Entrepreneur First and Chair of the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency).
Originally funded by public donation, the Trust has an endowment of around £16 million. It has developed a medium-scale fundraising programme over the last decade, and now intends to grow both its alumni activity and its fundraising, taking advantage of the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the first scholarships being awarded. An externally conducted feasibility study for the fundraising programme is underway at present.
The Trust is supported by a small administrative team. A new Director has just been appointed. The team is being strengthened to reflect plans for increased fundraising and alumni relations activity: a part-time executive assistant is in post, and a fundraising/alumni relations specialist will be recruited later in the spring.
The Trust is a registered charity overseen by a ten-person Trustee board chaired by Professor Sir Mark Walport. Many but not all of the Trustees are former Kennedy Scholars. The current recruitment is to replace Stephanie Flanders and Professor Fiona Macpherson, who will have served two five-year terms by Autumn 2024.
What Trustees do in the Kennedy Trust
As with any charity, Trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the charity. It is the role of Trustees to develop and update the charity’s strategy and oversee its work to deliver it. Trustees support and challenge the executive team to deliver on the charity's goals, oversee the charity’s finances, approve its policies, manage risks, and help to build its external networks.
In the Kennedy Trust, selection of scholars is a key annual activity: a number of Trustees are asked to be involved in the short-listing process, and Trustees also participate in two days of face-to-face interviews (currently in early January).
A recent Board Development Review has established a revised structure of sub-committees to handle detailed issues in a time-efficient way, and make more time for strategy within the Board itself. The new sub-committees are set out below.

Time commitment and specific contributions sought
The time commitment for Trustees is:
- Attendance at and preparation for three 2-3 hour board meetings a year, in spring, summer and autumn. In-person attendance is encouraged at all meetings, especially the summer meeting.
- Participation in two days of interviews in person in London in January.
- Participation in at least one of the board’s sub-committees (2-3 meetings, usually online).
- Ad hoc and occasional support to the Board and to the executive team on issues within the Trustee’s skillset.
- Where possible, attendance at trust events such as the annual summer reception, the annual lecture, and other ad hoc alumni gatherings.

For the academic trustee we are looking for
·Current or recent experience as a an academic in a UK university
·Someone who would make a good contribution to the Academic, Scholarships, and Welfare sub-committee, whose major task will be to conduct and oversee the shortlisting process each Autumn
·A good understanding of how study options at Harvard and MIT fit with the wider landscape of postgraduate opportunities elsewhere
·Extensive experience of candidate selection and good practice in shortlisting, interview, and selection
·The ability to add value to the Trust’s ambitions to further widen diversity of the scholar pool
·Insight into, and experience of, handling welfare issues for postgraduates and supporting candidates to make a success of their award.
·No academic discipline is ruled in or out. However, when the current Chair reaches the end of his term we shall lose our only Trustee with a medical background. This is therefore a gap we hope to fill at some point in the next few rounds of recruitment.
For the operational trustee we are looking for:
·significant experience of operational issues gained, for example, as a COO, CEO, project or programme director, operations director, or in a start-up
·someone who would make a good contribution to the Finance, Operations and Audit Committee
·proven experience in business planning, risk management, and project planning and management
·someone who can assist the Trust in some of the operational projects that lie ahead, such as modernising its administration, data-systems, website and records, and overseeing a move to more flexible office accommodation
Terms of appointment
·Trustees are appointed for a five-year term of office, renewable for a further five years maximum.
·These are unpaid positions, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Exam Star Learner is an educational charity. We are on a mission to address the lack of access to personalised learning support for underprivileged youth. We aim to deliver personalised and affordable tutorials in Maths, English, Science, and French to underachieving and disadvantaged children and young people. Education is unfair
A growing number of parents and guardians are paying for children as young as four to receive additional tuition. Research show that unlike their well-off peers, many children from lower income families are unable to afford the cost of private tuition which averages £25 per hour in London. This exacerbates education inequalities and contributes to widening the attainment gap.
Exam Star Learner Levelling the Playing Field
Unlike other tuition organisations, Exam Star Learner’s private tuition is genuinely affordable and personalised. Compassion, equality, and independence are among our core values.
We want to inspire our students and help them gain confidence and self-esteem so that they can maximise their potential and achieve greater success in school and in the workplace. We pair children and young people with tutors, and they learn in weekly personalised online tutorials which cater to their specific learning needs. We are currently in partnership with Southwark Council and the DofE.
About the opportunity
We are on the lookout for ten motivated Volunteer Recruitment Officers to join our team. This is an unpaid and voluntary role. In this shared role, each officer will work closely together to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to recruit volunteer tutors. The goal is to recruit and retain a pool of at least 200 retired teachers who can dedicate 4 hours to one-on-one and small group tutoring in English, Maths, Science, and/or French for children and young people aged 5-18. These tutorials will be conducted both in person (in Southwark schools) and online. The professionals will be responsible for recruiting, training, supporting, and retaining volunteer tutors to help reduce the education gap and raise the aspirations of underprivileged children and young people.
Detailed Tasks:
1. Volunteer Tutor Recruitment Strategy Document (Candidates 1 & 2):
Candidate 1: Strategy Development
· Collaborate with the charity Director to write a robust volunteer tutor recruitment strategy document.
· Discuss and refine the strategy document with Candidate 2.
Candidate 2: Recruitment Process
· Execute the recruitment strategy developed by Candidate 1.
· Manage all stages of the recruitment process for volunteer tutors, including advertising, screening, interviewing, and onboarding.
2. Training and Development (Candidates 3 & 4):
Candidate 3: Training Design
· Design a training programme for volunteer tutors.
· Collaborate with Candidate 4 to align the training programme with the recruitment strategy and volunteer management system.
Candidate 4: Training Delivery & Development
· Deliver the training programme designed by Candidate 3.
· Develop a system to track volunteer progress and collect feedback on the training programme.
3. Volunteer Management (Candidates 5 & 6):
Candidate 5: Volunteer Support
· Establish effective processes for volunteer management.
· Offer guidance and support to volunteer tutors, addressing any questions or issues that arise.
Candidate 6: Coordination & Updating Systems
· Track and record tutorial attendance and ensure that both students and volunteer tutors attend the sessions.
· Liaise with parents/guardians, school teachers and volunteer tutors as and when required to facilitate tutorials (i.e. provide support around rescheduling missed tutorials, tutorial scheduling issues, payment queries, refunds, lateness, re-sharing video conferencing links, sending reminders about tutorial sessions etc)
· Regularly review and update the volunteer management database to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
4. Retention Strategies, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Marketing (Candidates 7 & 8):

· Write a strategy document to encourage volunteers to remain engaged.
· Monitor the quality of tutorials by gathering feedback success stories from students, parents, and school teachers after each session.

· Establish methods to monitor and assess the effectiveness of the volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
· Collect feedback and success stories from volunteer tutors to share on social media for marketing purposes.
5. Administrative Support and Tutorial Scheduling (Candidates 9 & 10):

· Liaise with the team and rovide administrative support as and when necessary, including advertising, screening, interviewing, and onboarding of volunteer tutors, coordinating tutorials and tracking tutorial attendance, record-keeping, scheduling, and documentation etc

· Update and Manage Tutors profiles on our website (ensure all available tutors are accurately listed)
· Update and Manage Students Records to help us monitor number of tutorials delivered.

Volunteer Tutor Recruitment Timeline
The recruitment process for volunteer tutors will commence immediately upon the start of the shared role. The goal is to recruit a pool of at least 200 retired teachers within a timeframe of 6 months. However, the timeline may be subject to adjustments based on the availability and suitability of volunteer tutors.
Work Schedule
This is an unpaid and voluntary role. Each candidate should not work more than 20 hours per week, but there is flexibility to accommodate the needs and schedules of team members.

What We are Looking for in New Trustees
We are looking for trustees who will help us to continue to grow the charity’s impact and profile. Applicants should be driven by a desire to support an organisation at the forefront of providing exceptional equality, diversity and inclusion training and consultancy. We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
We are particularly looking for trustees who have some leadership experience or experience of leading in the charity sector. Ideally, applicants would also have knowledge and skills in one of the following areas: promotions and marketing, fundraising and HR. As a small charity, trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. Terms of Appointment
Terms of Office
- Trustees are appointed for a term of up to three years and can be reappointed up to three times.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time Commitment
- Boarding meetings are quarterly. Trustees are expected to attend at least 75% of meetings, including the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are currently held in person at Suite 11, Davey House, 31a St Neots Road, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, PE19 7BA. Trustees may also be part of sub-groups which will meet independently of the main board meetings. These meetings will be a combination of online and face-to-face meetings.
- In addition, trustees are expected to devote on average two hours per week to the role. This may involve scrutinising board papers, providing advice on new initiatives, providing support with ad hoc requests, supporting staff recruitment, disciplinaries and complaints, representing EqualiTeach at meetings and conferences or any other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Since the temporary closure of our venue due to fire and water damage, we have been working hard to continue our mission with our 'out and about' activity as well as focussing on reimagining our strategic plan (Plan 2030) and governance.

What will you do in this role?
As a trustee you will provide advice, knowledge and support to the leadership team at We The Curious.
With the steer of the Chair, the board of trustees ensures we pursue our purpose responsibly, are compliant with our governing documents, charity law and other relevant legislation. The board will review and advise on best practice and appropriate policies and procedures and uphold excellent governance.

This will involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussion and providing guidance as requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of our work in which the trustee has expertise.
Time commitment
_We hold quarterly board meetings, typically from 4pm to 7pm and one strategy away day per year. Trustees are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings either in person or by joining virtually.
_ Board Meetings are located at the We The Curious offices within the science centre in central Bristol, and once a year at another location around the City.
_ You will also be asked to take part in one of our subcommittee meetings which take place online, at least once per quarter. There are currently sub-committees for Finance & Risk Assurance and Purpose Strategy.
_ You may also be called upon for advice or assistance by the leadership team or to attend occasional events.

This is a voluntary role. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered. Food is provided at the quarterly Board meetings and strategy away days.

_Trustees can serve a maximum of six years with a reappointment after the first term of three years unless the trustee holds an office, such as Chair or Deputy Chair, in which case they would be eligible for a further three-year term. The maximum term of office is nine years.

We want to ensure that our board bring a variety of skills and knowledge to We The Curious. We are particularly looking for people to join us who have skills/knowledge in any of the following areas:

We want our people to reflect our city and build a place where everyone feels like they can belong. But we know that our organisation doesn’t yet represent the rich experiences and cultures of Bristol. We think when our board reflects our city it will lead to innovative , well informed and better decision making. We’ll be more resilient, inclusive, and better equipped to fulfil our vision and mission.
We especially want to hear from you if
_You identify as and/or have lived experiences with either: African and African Caribbean heritage, Carers, d/Deaf, Disabled, East Asian heritage, Global majority, LGBTQIA+ and/or non-binary, Neurodivergent, South Asian heritage, under 40, Visually impaired, Woman, Working Class
We are also working with Rising Arts to recruit two young people (18-25) to our board this year.
I’ve never been a trustee before, should I apply?
Yes! If you feel you connect with these values or have some the skills/knowledge we are looking for, then we’d love to hear from you.
You just need to be at least 18 years old. You don’t need formal qualifications, or previous trustee experience or a science background or have reached any stage in your career. We’ll give you training on good governance and opportunities for mentorship. This opportunity would suit someone who is new to governance or hasn’t been a trustee before.

Supporting you
Training
If you join the board, you will have an induction and onboarding experience to support you with your role and get you connected with the rest of the organisation.
If you are a first-time trustee or want a refresher, we will provide you with training on good governance and other topics related to your role. We will also provide you with mentorship from other members of the board.

Start date: 6 May 2024. Induction will take place over 2 weeks with first board meeting to attend on Thursday 23 May 2024.
