Job Description

Do you have a good level of English and a genuine interest in supporting a small, almost entirely volunteer-run charity that provides services to newly settled communities in the capital? Then this volunteer role might be for you! 

We provide a range of services aimed at supporting people to find work, learn English, understand and receive their rights, access healthcare and education. Our aims are to promote independence, wellbeing and community integration.

Purpose of the role:To provide the services of an interpreter for LADPP.

The Qualities and skills we are looking for:

  • Have an advanced level ofEnglish and Spanish/Portuguese
  • Have a qualification in Interpreting or in the process of getting one.
  • You need to be willing to undertake work on an ad-hoc basis. There is no fixed timetable: interpreting appointments are arranged depending on the client’s needs (volunteer interpreter will always have the right to refuse appointments).
  • You need to be willing to travel within London. Appointments will take place in different places around the city, (the volunteer interpreter will receive £10 expenses per appointment).
  • You will have a friendly and confident personality.
  • You will have strong organisational and communication skills.
  • You will be trustworthy, honest and reliable.
  • You will have a desire to give your time to the community and a genuine interest in gaining experience in the voluntary sector.

As an interpreter at LADPP you will:

  • Request and obtain in advance any relevant documentation and information relating to the interpreting appointment in order to ensure adequate preparation.
  • Provide true and faithful interpretation between the parties (between the service user, e.g. an LADPP member, and the service provider), without adding or omitting anything.
  • Observe impartiality whilst interpreting, abstaining from expressing personal opinions and giving advice, or letting your own morals, religious beliefs or views interfere with the interpreting process.
  • Treat any information obtained during the course of an assignment as strictly confidential.
  • Be punctual and proactive in finding the location of the appointment.
  • Be polite and courteous at all times whilst representing LADPP.
  • Complete the interpreting assignment log form, have the service user and service provider sign it, and return it to LADPP.
  • Work with the utmost integrity at all times.

What would you gain?

We believe that volunteering is a two-way exchange of skills that should be beneficial for both parties. Volunteering with us, you would receive lunch (up to £4) and travel expenses (up to £5), an initial induction, ‘on the job’ training, regular supervision and support from a named supervisor. In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend training from external third tier organisations.

Time commitment:

We are looking for volunteers able to commit minimum a few hours per week for at least 3 months. For this role, there is no guarantee of how many volunteer hours will be offered per week as this depends on the needs of the service users.
