About London Canal Museum:
London Canal Museum (LCM) is dedicated to educating and inspiring our visitors with the history of London’s canals – how they’ve shaped London’s development, the ordinary people that lived and worked on them, as well as the entrepreneurs who profited from them. We want to pass on the heritage of the canals so that future generations can learn about London’s industrial and social past.
The museum is a registered charity and is run almost entirely by volunteers. All Trustees, front of house, curatorial and many other roles are voluntary. The museum has two part-time paid staff – the Volunteering and Training Manager and an Education Manager who runs the schools programme.
London Canal Museum, 12-13 New Wharf Road, London, N1 9RT. We are a 5-10 minute walk from Kings Cross St Pancras tube and rail stations.
It is anticipated that the role will take approx. 25 hours per month.
The Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the Museum and are collectively responsible, through the Council of Management, for its governance. The role of the Council of Management is to ensure that the Museum has a clear vision and strategic direction, is sustainable and complies with the law. The Treasurer, with their strong financial background and experience, plays a key role within this team.
- Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
- Ensure proper financial records are kept
- Ensure effective financial procedures are in place.
- Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
- Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.
- As part of the Council of Management, develop the forward plan with a clear vision and strategic direction
- As a member of the Council of Management:
- Help develop the forward plan with a clear vision and strategic direction.
- Set aims, objectives and plans to implement the strategy.
- Ensure that the organisation pursues its charitable objectives as set out in the Museum’s Constitution and uses its resources exclusively in pursuant of these objects.
- Act as the lead trustee compiling the annual budget; monitor performance monthly against budget and ensure financial sustainability.
- Ensure compliance with charity law and all other legal and tax requirements.
- Safeguard the good name of the Museum, acting as an enthusiastic and well-informed ambassador. Promote the Museum and its activities, to enhance its profile.
- Use any specific skills, knowledge and professional expertise to help trustees reach sound decisions.
Line Management Responsibilities:
- Oversee the work of a volunteer cashier
- It is expected that Trustees will serve for a minimum of three years.
- The Trustees meet monthly. Trustees are also expected to take on specific tasks and activities.
- Trustees need to commit the necessary time to be effective.
- Trustees must adhere to the MA Code of Ethics and all the Museum’s policies.
- Trustees are expected to act reasonably and prudently in the best interests of the Museum, never in pursuit of personal interests or the interests of another organisation and to meet the legal obligations common to all charity trustees (i.e. comply with charity law, duty of prudence and duty of care).
Training and support
- Any training need to develop relevant skills and knowledge will be organised. Trustees are expected to attend where necessary.
What skills and qualities do you need?
- A strong background or interest in finance/accountancy (or related field) that enables the post-holder to undertake the required financial and legal tasks
- The ability to think strategically and creatively, demonstrate objectivity, good judgement and analytical ability.
- General competency in IT. Specific training will be given where necessary but the role holder will need to feel comfortable using email, spreadsheets, Xero and retail systems.
- A willingness to learn and open to new ideas.
- Good communication, team-working and inter-personal skills.
If you have an interest canals/waterways and London industrial history, that is very welcome but by no means essential!

- All volunteers who volunteer for 4 or more hours on site over the lunchtime period (11am-2pm) can claim up to £3.50 in food expenses

- The museum is currently in the process of moving its financial records from a spreadsheet system to Xero. A consultant is being sourced to carry out the necessary work.
- Conversion to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The Trustees have taken an in principle decision to convert from an unincorporated charitable trust to a CIO. The treasurer will play a role in assisting through this change. The project will be led by the Vice Chair.
- Museum Reaccreditation. The museum’s reaccreditation is due shortly and the treasurer will be expected to ensure that the Museum meets and retains the financial and governance standards set out in the accreditation scheme
