The Role of the Board

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. Specifically, the Board is responsible for:

• Ensuring that the charity and its representatives function within the legal and regulatory framework of charities and in line with the organisation’s governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
• Upholding the fiduciary duty invested in the position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the charity.
• Determining the overall direction and development of the charity through good governance and clear strategic planning.

Trustee - Role Description

• Ensuring the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements, and acts within the confines of its governing document and in furtherance to organisational activities contained therein.
• Acting in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times.
• Promoting and developing the charity in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to society.
• Maintaining sound financial management of the charity’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the organisations’ objects, and investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.
• Interviewing, appointing, and monitoring the work and activities of the senior paid staff if necessary.

What will you be doing?

Essex Sight in the trading name of Essex Blind Charity. We have been operating across Essex since the 1920s and our purpose is to provide practical and emotional support and advice to enable blind and partially sighted people to enjoy a full and active life in the way they want to. Following the sale of our care home last year, we are now focussing on our community services. This includes: information, advice and guidance; assessment services; home visiting; and social activities, all with the aim of helping people to improve their independence and wellbeing. 

We are in the fortunate position to be partly self-funding for the foreseeable future as we look to invest the funds from the sale of the care home in the continuation and development of our community services. We also operate under a contract for Essex County Council. 

We are looking to appoint several new trustees to support our succession planning process and to bring additional skills to the board. 2: Marketing and Digital – to help us build our reach and amplify our impact with the visually impaired community, volunteers and local and national networks including employers and other charities.

4: Lived experience - to ensure we build lived experience of vision impairment into all our work and reflect that experience in what we do.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home.

The role would suit someone looking for a flexible volunteering opportunity as times and days could fit in around work and other commitments to suit you.

What would you be doing?

• As part of a team of volunteers, maintain branch microsites and social media feeds.
• Look at ways to increase traffic to microsites and improve SSAFA’s digital brand.
• Keep content current and accurate.
• Support and maintain the SSAFA brand by consistently using our brand guidelines and tone of voice.
• Working with the digital marketing team, interpret analytical data to develop local communication plans.
• Working with local SSAFA branches, build social media channels and integrate on-line and off-line activity to best effect.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What training and support would you receive?

• Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
• Support from our Digital Marketing team based at SSAFA Central Office.
• Training on our web platform
• Access to analytical tools and our digital marketing tool kit
• Induction covering all the aspects of SSAFAs services and the difference we can make to people’s lives.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?

• Friendly and approachable people, possibly with some experience of digital marketing/ IT or social media
• Ability to write in English to a good standard.
• Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with clients, supporters, volunteers, other agencies, and staff.
• Understanding of how social media can be used to engage and influence.
• Ability to use social media applications including adding and editing content.
• Basic understanding of website maintenance, training will be provided.
• Basic understanding of digital analytical tools, training will be provided.

This is a on-site postion in our central London location, requiring a commitment of 2-6PM on Saturdays.

At its core, the Trans Legal Clinic is a human rights practice because Trans+ rights are human rights and without the influence of trans+ and non-binary people many of the human rights which are enjoyed by our cisgendered counterparts would cease to exist as we know them today. The mission of the Trans Legal Clinic is simple; we provide free and accessible legal help to transgender and non-binary people in need. Our overarching vision is a society where all people have access to the legal resources required for gender self-determination and where gender diversity is not just accepted but embraced, with trans+ people equipped with the necessary legal tools to navigate the world in their affirmed gender.

We are currently looking to expand our Social Media team to help us build upon our Social Media presense, primarly throughInstagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.This would be a great opportunity for someone interested in gaining experience in Social Media curation, Marketing, Communications and passionate about making the world a safer place for Trans & non-binary people. 

The ideal candidate is creative, interested and motivated by our mission, and familiar with Social Media landscape (trends, algorithms, and knowledge of Canva. No professional experience is required, though it is preferred.
