Job description

Can you listen without judgement? Can you keep a conversation going? Would you like to improve the quality of someone’s life and encourage them to be a little more active in their local community? We are recruiting people with good communication skills, who are patient and reliable, to befriend an adult in Bexley who has mental health problems, for 2 hours a week. It involves providing listening support and conversation.

This is a great opportunity for people studying counselling or psychology to gain experience and also a worthwhile role for people who want to help others in their community. We provide initial training (online) and supervision and guidance for you once you are matched with a client to befriend.

We are looking for volunteers from all groups in the community and backgrounds. Because of the nature of our work we can only accept volunteer applications from those aged over 18 years old. Experience of mental distress, your own or others’, can be helpful but it is not essential. You must be reliable and able to give time on a regular basis. You need to be patient, a good listener, and able to accept other people as they are.

Please note, at present this role is completed over the phone from home.
