Our Vision and Focus

Our vision at Misión México is that through a loving, caring, family environment where we focus on education, the children in our care will have the opportunities to grow and reach their full potential. Misión México is a family group home model established in 2001 by Pam and Alan Skuse. Since this time the number of children within our care have expanded and grown older. This has led to a complex case load of youth with varying levels of need. Misión México maintains a relationship with the DIF and other refuges to develop pathways which best support children coming in to Misión México. The vision of the Misión México refuge is to support children to excel in education so that they can transition successfully to positive, healthy futures.

Role Context

The main focus of our Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteer Program is to :

(1) ensure an adequate supply of volunteers are available to meet the needs of Misión Mexico

(2) assist with the day to day running of our main Misión Mexico house, and the care of our children and young adults

Our Volunteer Coordinator and volunteers play a vital role in ensuring our children´s routines are upheld, extracurricular obligations are attended, and activities are planned and delivered.

The Volunteer Coordinator manages all elements of volunteering on behalf of Misión México; including the online recruitment and communication with volunteers. The role involves assessing Misión México’s volunteer needs through consultation with the House Caregiver, and then meeting those needs through the placement and retention of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator manages volunteers and their relationships with those they come into contact with, such as the children, YTP, and locally engaged employees of Misión México. They also monitor, evaluate and accredit volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Direct Service Delivery and Pastoral Care

  • Act a supervisor and coordinator for volunteer shifts, working shifts when needed

  • Provide live-in house cover for the House Caregiver, allowing them to have time away from the house each month

  • Coordinate and facilitate activities for youth living in the main Misión México home

  • Assist in managing and supervising the children and young adults involvement in any extra-curricular activities, medical appointments or offsite excursions

  • Respond appropriately and effectively to day-to-day situations including challenging, trauma-related behaviours.

  • Consistently be a positive role model to the young people of Misión Mexico, acting as a source of authority in the house, whilst maintaining the confidentiality and safety of all our children and young adults

  • Resolve conflicts between children, or between children and volunteers and to escalate to the House Caregiver when necessary

2. Administration, personnel and project management

  • Assist with and lead on projects and activities as designated by the House Caregiver

  • Regularly meet with the House Caregiver to discuss the program

  • Coordinate the recruitment of volunteers, managing volunteer applications, police checks, fees and references

  • Conduct induction and training for all new volunteers. Ensure volunteer handbook and policies are read, understood and signed

  • Monitor, motivate and accredit volunteers, their performance and their work through ongoing supervision and supporting volunteers, ensuring their training needs are met

  • Organise weekly rosters, weekly volunteer meetings, monthly Misión Mexico socials (volunteers and staff) and one-to-one support as required

  • Be administratively self-supporting, and maintain effective electronic and paper-based office information systems including volunteer database and volunteer program related documents including policies, schedules, induction and training materials

  • Manage the volunteer annual calendar ensuring status is communicated regularly to the House Caregiver

  • Participate in the volunteer evaluation program monitoring through administration of the volunteer engagement survey. Use the evaluation findings to inform the House Caregiver to develop and improve services

  • Promote and champion the role of volunteers, both internally and externally, so that they are respected and valued for their contribution to the organisation

  • Ensure volunteers maintain the volunteer quarters and bathroom to a hygienic standard

Essential Criteria

Be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong communication and relationship building skills, the ability to influence and motivate volunteers, enthusiasm and a positive, outgoing attitude

  • Experience of working with children and young adults with a history of trauma, including understanding the impacts of early trauma or neglect and that long-term growth with children and youth may take time

  • Effective administrative skills, and a good standard of IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Effective time management skills with the ability to work autonomously including managing and prioritising own work load

  • A minimum of 4 weeks experience of volunteering at Misión Mexico

  • Fluency in English language and Basic/Conversational Spanish

  • Experience of personnel management and leadership skills in a similar context

  • Valid Working with Children Check and/or Criminal Record prior to employment. Subsequently staff must report any criminal charges or court appearances

Desirable Criteria

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of volunteering issues at an operational level including working with volunteer policies and procedures

  • An understanding of equity and diversity issues, and a commitment to putting these principles into practice

  • Experience in facilitating activities, sports and group work suitable for children and young people

  • Full driving license, with willingness to drive 7 passenger or 18 passenger vans in Mexico if required

Additional

On engagement of role there will be a 6-week probationary period at which time the House Caregiver and successful applicant will review position and future of the role. Annual leave and working hours will be negotiated with the House Caregiver. This job description is not exhaustive, and is provided to assist the post holder to know what her/his duties are. It may be amended from time to time, without change to the levels of responsibility and in discussion with the post holder.
