Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Bournemouth, Plymouth or Wiltshire? Reach South Academy Trust seeks two non-executives/directors to join its board with a background in educational leadership and committee chair experience in either primary or secondary education.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The Opportunity

Reach South Academy Trust was established in 2016 to provide primary, secondary and special education in Bournemouth, Plymouth and Wiltshire in the South West of England. The trust is an independent charitable company promoting the values of the REACH family (Raising the Educational Achievement of Children).

Reach South oversees 883 staff, 5,100 pupils aged from 3-years old to 19-years old, a combined budget of £50 million and 14 academies in Bournemouth, Plymouth and Wiltshire. The trust operates: ten primary academies; two all-through academies for pupils aged 4-16; the University Technical College in Plymouth; and an academy for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) called The Springfields Academy, for children with autism related conditions sited in Calne and Salisbury.

The board seeks two educational leaders with expertise in

  • Academy Trust CEO / Executive Headteacher / Principal
  • Primary education leadership or
  • Secondary education leadership
  • Local Authority or Academy Trust Director of Children's Services / Education
  • Leadership of Teaching / National Leader of Education (NLE)
  • Ofsted HMI
  • Audit and Risk experience would be advantageous but not essential
  • Corporate governance

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 - 24 months:

  • Mitigating the impact of Covid19
  • Integrating the recently acquired Plymouth School of Creative Arts (now re-named Millbay Academy), which comes with a very poor academic record; and
  • Preparing for the opening of a new special free school for special educational needs pupils in Salisbury within the next 24 months

What's involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours' time per month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.
