JOB DESCRIPTION

Marie Curie Helper is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.

Helper volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, eg family home, a care home or in the community.
• Provide one-to-one companionship and support. 

For example: offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (e.g. to medical appointments) or taking short trips out. Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. You may be supporting your client’s family or carers before or during bereavement.  This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested 

(This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Helper volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)

• Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone 
• Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required 
• Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
• Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required 
• Represent the Marie Curie Helper service positively to those using the service

Why we need your help 

Coping with bereavement involves painful emotions, coming to terms with loss and making adjustments in life. Many people find it a great comfort to have someone to talk to about how they are feeling during this difficult time.  

We are looking for volunteers to provide emotional support over the phone to adults who have been bereaved by a terminal illness. This role will be supporting individuals who have made contact with us through our national telephone Support Line. You will be helping them to explore their feelings and adapt to life post-bereavement. Training, support and supervision will be provided.  

What we need you to do 

Your role will include the following tasks:

• Provide short-term emotional support over the phone to matched clients for up to 6, 45-minute, sessions (normally 1 or 2 at any given time) 
• Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around their loss with empathy and sensitivity
• Direct clients to relevant sources of information and support as needed
• Complete necessary documentation as required by the service (e.g. Confidential Working Agreement) and pass on appropriate service information to your supervising manager 
• Participate in one-to-one and or group supervision with an assigned contact on a regular basis (around once a month, by phone or skype) 
• Undertake both initial and ongoing training in line with the role, some of which will be face-to-face, some independent study. This includes attending a two-day (likely weekend) training programme.

What skills or experience do you need? 

• Ability to provide emotional support without judgement and within boundaries 
• Ability to deal sensitively with bereaved people and have an awareness of their individual needs 
• Patience, empathy and emotional stability 
• Commitment and reliability – able to keep to appointments and volunteer for the duration of a client match 
• An understanding of the importance of safeguarding and maintaining client confidentiality
• Willingness to learn and undertake required training and participate in support supervision 
• Basic IT skills and the ability, or willingness to learn, to use the calling system.
• Welsh speaking is desirable

Working requirements 

• A quiet and confidential space for working, away from distraction or interruption
• Access to a smartphone, laptop or desktop computer
• Available at the same time every week for up to 6 sessions
• Willingness and ability to travel within the UK once or twice a year for training and support – training will require a weekend, (overnight stay depending on location). Expenses will be reimbursed.

My Death, My Decision campaigns for a compassionate assisted dying law to help end unnecessary suffering for the terminally ill and those suffering unbearably. You can lead its strategic initiatives and inspire the team to achieve the goal.

As our current Chair must step down at the end of 2024, we are seeking a Chair elect to join the board no later than the end of the first quarter of 2024. This will allow shadowing of the current Chair to ensure a smooth transition, by maintaining continuity and facilitating a seamless handover of leadership.

As the Chair of My Death, My Decision, you will play a pivotal role in leading our organisation to further our campaign goals. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about the cause either from personal experience or from professional engagement with those making end of life choices.

You will be a seasoned leader with a proven track record of strategic thinking and decision-making, whether in the context of a campaign, a charity or a not-for-profit company. Your leadership should inspire and guide our team towards achieving our mission, making a tangible impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Governance: Oversee the governance of My Death, My Decision, including chairing board meetings and member meetings, ensuring effective decision-making processes and working closely with the Director of Finance.
• Leadership and Coordination: Provide strong leadership by chairing events, onboarding new board members, and coordinating our membership at the ‘World Federation of Right to Die Societies’.
• Spokesperson: Act as the primary spokesperson for My Death, My Decision, responding to media requests and inquiries, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the campaign and its objectives.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a key point of contact with our patrons, benefactors, and key supporters, nurturing relationships and promoting our mission.
• Miscellaneous: This role will require the successful candidate to ensure the smooth running of the organisation, both internally and in its external presentation. This will include occasional tasks outside of the realm of the job description. 

We are looking for a board member willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role.

You will be a good fit for this role if you have:

• Commitment & Enthusiasm: A strong passion for changing the law on assisted dying and a commitment to our campaign goal. The ability to inspire and engage others.
• Knowledge on assisted dying: As the role of chair will require much external engagement with relevant stakeholders and the media, in-depth understanding of the subject matter is essential. We are however willing to consider candidates who have a broad understanding but need time to become familiar with the details of the campaign during the Chair elect transition referred to above.
• Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic thinking skills to develop and execute a campaign strategy in collaboration with other board members and small team of MDMD staff.
• Governance skills: Previous experience around not for profit governance.
• Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to act as a spokesperson for the organisation, in particular towards bodies such as the Houses of Parliament, medical associations, the media etc.

Who are Blood Pressure UK?

Blood Pressure UK is a national charity which was established in 1996. In the UK, 16 million people are estimated to have high blood pressure with one in three (5 million+ people) unaware their blood pressure is raised. Known as the Silent Killer as you can be unaware your blood pressure is raised until you experience heart attack or stroke, or it’s picked up in a random check.

For over 20 years we have been leading the light on people understanding their blood pressure numbers so if needed they can take the steps needed to reduce it. This culminates each year with Know Your Numbers Week! in September, a week-long campaign with a range of partners for people to understand their blood pressure numbers with advice and guidance of how to make vital changes to their lifestyles to change it.

Our Team

Blood Pressure UK currently have a staff team of three (two who are part-time). We contract an external accounting company to provide financial services to the charity including annual accounts, monthly management accounts, payroll, invoice creation and book keeping, making sure the charity complies with relevant governance for the charity commission and companies house.

What we are looking for…

We are looking for a qualified accountant, either working or recently retired with ideally experience of charity financial processes but not essential.

You may have a connection either personally or through family and friends with high blood pressure but it’s not a prerequisite for the role. Your experience and enthusiasm are the key factors we are looking for.

We’re looking for someone with experience of working as a chairperson to join us as our Chair of Trustees, to help provide excellent leadership and ensure that everyone remains focused on the delivery of the organisation’s charitable purposes.

About YBTC:

Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity began in 2003. It was originally named ‘Andrea’s Gift’, set-up in memory of Andrea Key, who died from a brain tumour aged 42.  Our vision is to cure a devastating disease that affects so many people, of all ages and background. Whilst we’re working to find a cure, we provide the best patient and family support network we can. We fund dedicated research projects across Yorkshire into treating and curing child and adult brain tumours to try to change those statistics for the better. At the same time, we support patients, carers and their loved ones who are impacted by this devastating disease now through our specialist support services.

Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour is currently unincorporated. We are currently undergoing the process of moving the charity structure to a CIO, which will provide limited liability for Trustees to third parties. This process will take approximately 6 months to complete, and our current reserves policy is to cover 6 months of expenditure.

Marie Curie Companion is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.

Companion Volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, eg family home, a care home or in the community.
• Provide one-to-one companionship and support. 

For example: offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested 

(This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Companion volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)

• Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone 
• Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required 
• Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
• Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required 
• Represent the Marie Curie Companion service positively to those using the service

• Time Commitment: typically, 4 hours per month, for a term of 3 years (initial 12-month period)
• Location: Board meetings are held 4 times per year, and we work to find times that are accessible for Board members, which could include evenings and weekends. We meet twice a year in person in Oxford, and twice a year via Teams
• Renumeration: this is a voluntary role and reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed

An independent charity, The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) has been leading efforts to incorporate the values of environmental sustainability into the health sector since its establishment in 2008. Our work is underpinned by CSH’s Principles of Sustainable Clinical Practice: prevention; patient empowerment; lean care systems; low carbon alternatives.   

CSH has a particular focus on:

About You

Could you use your social media, marketing and communications experience to raise the profile of a small charity? Help us to increase our social media presence and engagement, generate greatr content and help promote existing activities.

Our charity delivers a range of awareness campaigns and support services to patients, relatives, partners and carers who have been affected by a poorly understood pain condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We are looking for 2 experienced social media and communications volunteers who are able to develop posts and campaigns from design to inception, create fresh and engaging content, increase engagement and to increase awareness of the charity and of the condition we represent.

Even though we are a small organisation we have big ideas and would like to draw on your experience in the communications world to help the charity deliver engaging content and communications to help us spread our aims and message to all our audience.

What Will You Be Doing?

• Help increase engagement, improve the number of followers/likes, create & execute a content calendar
• Produce fresh, branded and engaging content for our social media channels 
• Prepare graphics and text for sharing across channels 
• Engage with our followers and encourage interaction 
• Manage and maintain social media channels on a regular basis
• Support charity campaigns, marketing, events and fundraising activities by promoting them on our social media feeds
• Use your creative skills to devise games, competitions and other strategies to engage, grow, and widen our target audiences
• Develop publicity materials and communication techniques for social media to raise awareness of our chronic condition 

You will be working with the charity’s founder and Chair as well as with other trustees and volunteers who will provide an overview of our existing social media content, our brand and how we have approached our social media content to date. 

Experience
We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in:

• Different types of marketing and communications media, including electronic and social media
• Writing and editing marketing content for social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn
• Building strategies to increase social media following and /or build fundraising or awareness campaigns
• Developing a coherent brand voice for social media, from content creation to community interactions
• Using and setting up tools such as Buffer, Canva, Tweetdeck etc
• Creating and executing content calendars to help plan social media activity 

Skills Required

Patient Drivers – Ely & Llanrumney

Patient Drivers support with City Hospice’s day center by transporting patients to and from their homes to our hospice in Whitchurch. Our patients are based across the city and often need support with transport to attend on Monday and Thursday afternoons.

By using your own car to transport our patients, you’ll be enabling them to socialise with other people, receive complementary therapies, and have some much-needed entertainment.

Our patient groups run on a Monday and Thursday between 1:30pm and 3:30pm, with patients coming from across the city. We're particularly interested to hear from prospective volunteers that live in and around Ely and Llanrumney.

Alex TLC is a trusted and experienced organisation offering support and information for all those affected by a genetic leukodystrophy. These are a group of often terminal, rare neurodegenerative conditions, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds, most notably children. Established in 2004, we are recognised by the NHS and global stakeholders as the "go to" organisation for those affected by these devastating conditions in the UK.

Like many other small charities, we have grown organically from an informal support group to a thriving organisation supporting over a thousand individuals affected by leukodystrophy worldwide. 

We are looking for experienced candidates to help develop and improve our existing beneficiary services as well as create and optimise future opportunities for growth.

It is an exciting time to join Alex TLC and we are delighted to be able to offer this opening to join our Board and complement current trustees.

Alex TLC currently employs 23 staff (three of whom are directly affected by leukodystrophy) and runs a charity shop business comprising five shops to support core costs.

We are looking for new trustees with experience in one or more of these areas: legal, PR, marketing, communications, fundraising, campaigning, political activity, IT, public health/care services, management, partnership, not for profit

As a collection tin volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting us to raise our profile and fundraise within your community.

You will look after the Magpas Air Ambulance collection tins within a designated area, replacing full tins and returning them to an agreed location. You can also help us by finding new locations in which to place tins. These collection tins are an important part of how we raise money, raising approximately £20,000 per year.

As a collection tin volunteer, you will be expected to:

• Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner
• Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance, having basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service
• Wear your Magpas Air Ambulance ID badge, ensuring it's visible at all times
• Travel to your collection tins (on two or four wheels). Where motorised vehicles are used, you must hold a full UK driving license, have a road-worthy vehicle with up-to-date road tax, MOT certificate (where applicable) and fully comprehensive insurance.
• Establish the regularity of required tin collections in your area, keep a log of your activities and feedback to the Supporter Care Officer
• Proactively replace full collection tins as needed and deliver them to an agreed location within one working day of collection
• Place new tins in locations within your area, ensuring they are accurately labelled with the location and organisation's name
• Inform the Supporter Care Officer of any new tins placed or any changes, helping us to ensure records are accurate and kept up to date
• Follow all Magpas Air Ambulance policies and procedures, including reporting any accidents and incidents
• Recognise, respond to, and report any safeguarding issues or concerns

As an event volunteer you will play a vital role by raising awareness of our services, assisting with fundraising and engaging with the local community.You will represent Magpas Air Ambulance at a wide range of events indoors and outdoors, come rain or shine. You may be assisting with car parking, meeting and greeting, setting up a stall, selling merchandise, engaging the public and answering questions. Magpas Air Ambulance have a presence at over 150 events each year and need reliable, friendly people like you to help us achieve this. At larger events you will be supported by an event lead and we'll always make sure you are prepared and confident, you don't need to have previous experience, just be willing to get stuck in!

As an event volunteer, you will be expected to:

• Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner.
• Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance to secure basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service.
• Wear your Magpas Air Ambulance ID badge while volunteering, ensuring it's visible at all times.
• Follow the leadership and guidance of the event lead, staff member or event organiser.
• Assist in all event activities in a flexible and friendly manner.
• Have good communication skills and be able to work with other volunteers and staff as part of a team.
• Process the sale of merchandise and take donations.
