Job Description

Advocacy for OCD: Volunteer Role Description

Volunteer Role Title: Admin Volunteer

Our Advocacy Service has been providing people with much needed support since 2010. To date we have had a major impact on the lives of more than 600 people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and we remain the only advocacy service working specifically with people with those conditions.

Our Service provides adults who have a diagnosis of OCD or BDD, and who have a specific issue because of that condition, with independent advocacy support via email, on the phone or in person. The main issues that people bring to the service include difficulties in accessing care & treatment or problems with their housing, education provider or employer but we will try to support people with any issue they may have.

Our Advocacy Volunteers are home-based across England and the Service is overseen by the National Advocacy Manager and Lead Advocate who are based in our office in Islington, London. We are now looking for an Admin Volunteer to join the team to add to the smooth running of the Advocacy Service.

Location: OCD Action’s offices: Suite 506-507 Davina House, 137-149 Goswell Road, London EC1V 7ET.

Responsible to: National Advocacy Manager

Hours of work: Negotiable Monday to Friday. Session times 9.30-1pm and/or 1-4.30pm. Commitment required is at least 2 sessions/week or one full day/week.

Please note that we would require a minimum commitment of 6 months volunteering following training.

Purpose of the Role: To provide admin support to the Advocacy team.

Specific Responsibilities could include:

  • Answering the telephone.
  • Making calls to potential clients of the service.
  • Emailing enquirers to the service with referral forms, holding emails etc.
  • Keeping a waiting list of enquirers.
  • General office duties including typing, photocopying, printing, scanning & shredding.
  • Working at all times in accordance with OCD Action’s Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Assisting the office team with any other administration duties seen as appropriate.

Benefits to Volunteer:

  • The opportunity to develop new and existing skills and gain experience volunteering in a charity.
  • The satisfaction of knowing you are making a vital difference to the work of OCD Action.
  • An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • Travel expenses (and lunch up to £5 a day if working a full day).

Person Specification

  • An understanding of and interest in the needs of people with OCD.
  • A friendly, professional and welcoming manner.
  • An ability to demonstrate patience, sensitivity and reliability.
  • An open-minded approach to individuals, avoiding judgement and stereotyping.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including a warm and professional telephone manner.
  • Fully computer literate and comfortable with the main Microsoft Office tools such as Word and Outlook.
  • An ability to use your own initiative but be able to ask for help when needed.
