Job description

Are you looking for a new challenge, to revive old skills and/ or learn new ones? Oxfam’s charity shop in Tooting are looking for a part time voluntary Deputy Manager/ Supervisor.


Postholder reports to: Shop Manager

Reporting to this postholder: A volunteer team of an average of 15 volunteers.

Volunteer Team Management

Support the shop manager to induct, retain and train an inclusive, diverse and motivated volunteer team.
Have the ability to identify and assess the skills and potential of the volunteer team and delegate accordingly.
Be able to communicate effectively with both the shop manager and the shop team and be comfortable to represent Oxfam within the shop and the community.
Provide a safe and healthy working environment and ensure that all team members are aware of and operate within Oxfam’s health and safety policies and procedures, including waste management.
Adhere to and enforce Oxfam’s safeguarding policies including the Child Protection Policy.
Work with the shop team to maximise Gift Aid on donated products.
Contribute to ensuring that all of Oxfam’s financial procedures are adhered to and executed in a timely fashion by the shop team.
Support the shop manager to maximise the shop’s opening hours and ensure the shop is open and managed by the shop team in the absence of the management team.
Shop Floor
Support the shop manager to set up and maintain efficient and effective stock processing systems, including backroom systems.
Ensure that the quality and safety of donated stock is monitored by volunteers.
Collaborate with the shop manager to set high standards of cleanliness, display and merchandising for both donated stock and any new products. Ensure that all legal and Oxfam internal procedures regarding the sale of donated and new stock are adhered to.
Work with the manager to inspire the team to provide a great customer and donor experience, which enables Oxfam to attract new supporters every day.
Being part of Oxfam
Play a key role in enabling the shop to represent Oxfam and increase the knowledge of the local community about Oxfam’s mission and work.
Keep up to date with developments and changes in the shop network and at area level.
Collaborate with the shop manager in empowering the team to respond to all appeals and fundraising opportunities.
It could be that you're looking to build skills for your CV - in our shops you can learn customer service, recruitment, training and mentoring, finance/ admin, sales and merchandising as well as all aspects of running a successful retail business. We will help you build your CV with the skills you’d like and will train you in all aspects of running the shop – we even run internship programmes, can offer NVQs or training as a voluntary assistant manager, or fixed term project based volunteering opportunities. It’s a great way to demonstrate your leadership skills, provide tangible examples of what you can do for future employers and grow your own confidence and experience.
