About the role
University of Sunderland Students’ Union (USSU) is a £1.2m independent charity dedicated to empowering the students of the University of Sunderland. USSU does this by giving students a voice within the university and wider community. We also deliver advisory services, create a welcoming community of students on campus, and enable more students to feel at home in Sunderland.
It’s an exciting time to join us as we have recently launched a new student-facing space on City Campus. Our new plan takes us up to 2022 and sees us target three core objectives:
- “Your voice”, We want to ensure that we articulate the voice of students to the University and other key stakeholders in the city and wider student movement in the most effective way possible.
- “Your course and you”, We will be providing a range of supportive services that can support students. This includes Peer mentoring and buddying programmes as well as campaigning on major issues such as Mental Health and Wellbeing as well as local such as the accessibility of our campus and how we can best support commuter students.
- “Your place”, We love Sunderland, we were proud to have backed the Capital of Culture bid and want to build on the exciting partnerships we have developed in the City. We want to promote the diversity, vibrancy and talent within our student population and help more students act as ambassadors for the city.
Alongside your statutory responsibilities as a member of our Board of Trustees, you will have a crucial role to play in ensuring that our plans and goals are effective, students are empowered and that we make a strong impact on students’ lives. You will have the opportunity to help guide our thinking, contribute new ideas and take part in some of the most current discussions in the Higher Education sector.
Who we're looking for
To help us achieve success, we are primarily seeking a strategic and progressive senior leader who can support our Senior Leadership Team, Student Sabbatical Officers and student trustees with advice and guidance. We are open to your background, but particularly interested in seeking individuals with HR, Education and Policy experience. For the position of Vice Chair, it would be ideal if you had prior experience of serving on a board.
We are proud that our Trustee Board empowers students and Sabbatical Officers to take part in the governance of our charity. To add value to our Trustee Board, you will need to be excited and motivated by the opportunity to work with a diverse range of fellow Trustees, which includes other External Trustees as well as Student and Sabbatical Trustees.
The post of a Students’ Union Trustee is an amazing opportunity to add value to an incredible organisation.
