About the role
2x Trustees (People or Finance)
Circa 12 days a year
We exist to improve student life at the University of Reading.
We are a students’ union with a strong history that is proud to represent the students of the University of Reading and work tirelessly to further their interests. We have an excellent partnership with the University by working together to improve student the experience.
As a £5m+ multi-purpose charity, this can see us campaigning and influencing on behalf of our members, through to delivering a range of services to empower students including our advice centre, societies and sports clubs. We also operate a comprehensive commercial portfolio, including a nursery, several bars, Reading’s largest nightclub, a café and multiple tenanted retail units.
RUSU is at a critical point in our history, operating in an increasingly challenging education sector with ever-changing student needs, and global pandemic to navigate. We have a new Board of Trustees, newly elected student officers, a new Chief Executive, and about to start building a new strategy to set our direction for the future. We are currently going through a board-level governance review to ensure we have the right structures and processes in place for a modern charity of our size. We have already established new board committees, including a dedicated People & Culture Committee and a revised Finance & Risk Committee. The goal of which will be to build an even more values-led approach to leading people, and to enhance our financial sustainability.
As Trustees, you will benefit from a charity that is operating well in a strong financial position, with talented staff and passionate elected officers fostering an excellent relationship with our university partner.
Who we are looking for
We are now looking to build on this foundation by recruiting two Trustees with experience in developing people strategies and HR or strategic finance. Our People (HR) focused Trustee will Chair our new People & Culture Committee, and our Finance Trustee will Chair our revised Finance & Risk Committee. We are open-minded about your background and experience but do expect you are operating at a strategic level.
RUSU is an inclusive organisation that is proud of its diverse workforce, that proudly includes a number of women in leadership positions, disabled and LGBT+ staff. Currently, we do not have as strong a representation of BAME people within the organisation and would encourage any BAME candidates that match our person specification to apply. We are committed to removing barriers within our workplace and will be open to considering requests for flexibility or alternative working arrangements.
This is a fantastic opportunity to help a charity with huge potential to continue their pursuit of excellence.
