Job Description

About Providence Row

Tackling the root causes of homelessness in East London

For homeless people, or those at risk of homelessness, finding employment and housing opportunities can feel like an uphill battle, even more so if they’re affected by physical, mental health or substance misuse issues. Providence Row works with more than a thousand homeless and vulnerably housed people a year in East London, offering an integrated service of crisis support, advice, recovery and learning and training programmes.  Our aim is to ensure that people who are so often excluded from mainstream services gain the support and opportunities they need to create a safe, healthy and sustainable life away from the streets. Central to our work are our core values of Compassion, Respect, Inclusiveness, Empowerment and Justice.  These inform the content, style and delivery of our services.

About volunteering with us

This role description outlines the tasks and responsibilities applicable to this position.  It also protects the volunteer from being asked to do tasks they may consider unreasonable. We recognise that volunteers have different strengths and want to gain different skills so to keep the role description relevant to volunteers it is reviewed in regular meetings with your line manager. As a volunteer working within the Learning & Wellbeing Team you will have the opportunity to develop skills in both client-facing and project work, as well as gaining new skills and experience in a homelessness charity. We are looking for enthusiastic, supportive and committed volunteers, with the ability to work with clients who have varying support needs and challenging behaviours.

About the role

You will be providing massage therapy at our weekly Adults (18+) service for those living with or affected by homelessness and substance misuse related issues. Our centre is a resource for support, information, encouragement and change. In addition to a range of workshops our members can benefit from services including counselling, advice and support and complementary therapies.

The impact of homelessness has led many of our clients to live very isolated lives that are often lacking any form of touch. By sharing your practice with us you are helping us break down those barriers that can transform someone’s life.

We provide all equipment necessary - massage table, oil, wipes, etc - in a private treatment room. The service runs on Friday morning from 9.30am to 1pm in half hour slots, with set up of the therapy room needed from around 9.15am. Therapies offered include full back, neck, shoulders and head massage, and legs are also offered through clothes. Type of therapy and areas for work are discussed and decided on between therapist and client.  Each client is risk assed and referred. The massage therapist conducts the health assessment with the client during their first appointment.

We are looking for

• Qualified massage therapists – minimum ITEC Level 3
• Fully insured massage therapists
• Ability to form relationships within a diverse community
• Non-judgemental, adaptable and open-minded
• Ability to use own initiative
• Passionate about helping the most vulnerable individuals

In return we will provide

• A full induction/training programme
• Ongoing support from staff

• Regular supervision

Place of work: Providence Row, 82 Wentworth Street, E1 7SA

Every Friday 9.30-13.00 pm .

As the post will involve working with vulnerable adults, we will complete a DBS check so we can make sure the post is appropriate.
