Job Description

Rahab is a charity founded by Sisters Adoratrices to care for women affected by prostitution and human trafficking for purpose of sexual exploitation, helping them to rebuild their lives.

About the role

We are looking for a resourceful, flexible and committed volunteer ESOL teachers for 1:1 and small group classes for women who wish to develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  Learners are women from different countries, cultures and language groups where English is not their first language. Some wish to improve their conversational English whilst others wish to study at an advanced level to achieve IELTS or CELTs qualifications. Whilst we very much welcome teachers who are qualified, equally important is the volunteer’s ability to engage, inspire and support the women in their learning.

Qualifications and experience

  • Qualified e.g.TESL, TESOL, CELTA or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching English to people with limited English literacy.
  • Experience teaching 1:1 and / or small groups.

Personal qualities

  • Sincere, compassionate, positive and confident, committed.
  • High personal integrity / boundaries.
  • Resourceful and self-motivated.

Attitude and approach

  • Commitment to philosophy and approach of Rahab.
  • Open minded / non-judgemental; a positive outlook.
  • Professional and reliable;  friendly.

Skills and abilities

  • Competency in assessing women's learning goals and level.
  • Able to tailor classes to individual and changing needs.
  • Able to research and resource suitable training materials.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.


Weekly lessons, 2-3 hours a week (includes preparation and travel time).

Additional important information

Rahab reserves the right to select women only for roles working directly with our clients (exemption under section 7.2e of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975).

We also require every member of the team to undergo a check for details of any conviction of a criminal offence. These checks are free for volunteers and we will apply to the Disclosure and Barring Bureau Services on your behalf as part of the volunteer application process.

If from outside the European Union you will need to check that your visa allows you to volunteer. Please note that Rahab is not able to sponsor volunteer visas.

Confidentiality is essential for the women we support, and volunteers are required to adhere to Rahab’s policies and procedures at all times.
