Retail Volunteer Roles in East Midlands

JOB DESCRIPTION

Our charity shops rely on generous donations made by the public to raise crucial funds for Marie Curie. From clothes, homeware and books, to CDs and DVDs, we sell a wide variety of products.

We are looking for volunteers to help us sort through all these donations, pick out the best items and prepare and sell them to our customers. Without the help of our dedicated volunteers we could not provide our customers with high quality items at affordable prices.  This allows us to raise funds so our nurses can continue to provide care to terminally ill people and support for their families.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Sort through donations, being aware of the possibility of a hidden gem and better quality brands
• Prepare items for sale by checking, hanging, steaming, sizing and pricing them
• Work on the shop floor and provide excellent customer service to our shoppers
• Operate the till 
• Help out with basic housekeeping to keep the shop clean and tidy

What is the purpose of this role?

Supporting staff to manage the stockroom at the shop in Sutton in Ashfield and the Ransom Wood storage unit. On an occasional basis, to help with collections and deliveries, and transfer of stock between our shops in Sutton in Ashfield and West Bridgford.

What impact does this role have?

This role helps the shop to run efficiently and effectively, to be able to sell products for Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, which in turn, can be used to allow Age UK Notts to continue to run effective services for older people.

What activities might you be involved in?

• Supporting staff to manage the stock room within the Sutton shop – keeping racking clean and tidy, organising space to maintain good health and safety systems.
• Accepting donations from supporters that visit the shop and encouraging those who are taxpayers to sign up to Gift Aid to increase the value of the donation when sold by 25%.
• Processing items at Ransom Wood storage unit when there is no room to deposit them straight into the shop.
• Travelling with the driver to pick up donated items (furniture, white goods, bric-a-brac, clothing, or a mix of all 4)
• Completing deliveries with the driver to customers’ homes
• Volunteering in line with the Charity’s policies and procedures and adhering to the Volunteer Code of Conduct

What are we looking for?

• The physical ability to lift and move furniture and other stock so applicants should be physically fit and be able to complete these tasks
• A willingness to complete a variety of tasks both in the shop and at the Ransom Wood storage unit.
• An individual who gets on well with people to facilitate good customer service

• Desirable:

• The ability to drive the van if needed (Luton van or equivalent) will be advantageous.
• Own transport to get to Ransom Wood storage unit (public transport is available but takes a long time

For insurance purposes, volunteer drivers are required to be over 21 and under 75

When would you be needed to volunteer?

We are looking for individuals who can volunteer either every Wednesday and/or Saturday between 9.30am and 4.30pm

What training will you be given?

You will be given all the training you need to enable you to carry out your role which will include a thorough induction.

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) was founded in 2009 and aims to provide protection and improve the welfare of animals in need. Our first project is based in Borneo, where we provide a lifeline to thousands of dogs and cats every year in need of veterinary care and support. Our companion animal programmes have since developed in other countries, including Romania and Penang Island, as well as support programmes to help other species.

We have recently relaunched our Auctions for Animals online fundraising events and are searching for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team to help source donations. Ideally our volunteers will have some experience in generating donations/prizes for events, or will be happy to spread the word within your local community and collect new or preloved donations for us. 

Tasks will include:

• Identifying suitable avenues for donations, creating and building relationships with our supporters and donors and helping to promote IAPWA within your local community.

• Assisting with the running of our monthly auction events via our Auctions For Animals Facebook Group.

• Packing and Posting sold items. 

Ideally you will;

• Enjoy promoting our charity within the community and help to generate a regular stream of donations. 

• Experience of using Google Docs/Sheets or willingness to learn.

• Be able to work independently and use your own initiative.

• Offer 1-3 hours per week (hours can be fully flexible)

• A passion to help raise funds for animals in our care

About this role 

You will be vital to the work of your local Scope shop, generating income and raising awareness of our work in your local community. You will receive all training and support you need to get involved and enjoy your time volunteering. 

Your role may include: 

• sorting and organising goods for sale
• helping to display stock and window dressing
• tidying and cleaning the shop
• welcoming and supporting customers
• using the till and taking payments
• steaming clothes so they look better for customers
• pricing and tagging new donations

When and where 

You will be in our Scope Burton on Trent shop at 41 High Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 1JS. We are flexible on the times you would like to volunteer. We’d love your help for as little as 1 hour a week, but if you can give more time that would help us even more.

As a Trustee, you will make a difference to your local community. You’ll have a key role assisting in the overall management and development of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland ensuring that all organisational and legal requirements are adhered to.

Volunteering in one of our Sense Shops will involve a variety of tasks that you can get involved with. These include:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

• A full induction and ongoing support and guidance from your Shop Manager to make sure you feel confident in your role
• Support to develop new skills, knowledge and experience, in particular of a retail environment, but also skills such as teamwork, customer service, communication and using your initiative

Our experts offer support that’s tailored to the individual needs of each person, whether that’s at our centres, through our holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes. In addition to practical support, we also provide information to families, and campaign for the rights of people with complex disabilities to take part in life.

Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

• A leader, able to motivate others and get them involved to achieve great results.
• A team player who is good with people and enjoys interacting with the public.
• Passionate about providing great customer service; friendly and helpful. 
• Enthusiastic and motivated with a positive attitude.
• Flexible, proactive, reliable and trustworthy.
• Confident with cash handling and have an eye for detail.
• Aware of health and safety issues and happy to follow policies and procedures.

• Interested making a difference to people who have complex disabilities and are deafblind. 

Our Key Volunteers are shop volunteers who have additional responsibilities. This is a varied and responsible role where you’ll be provided with training that will equip you to support the Shop Manager and Assistant with the day to day running of the shop, including: 

• Provide a warm, friendly welcome to customers.
• Provide great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience, support other volunteers to do the same.
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public. 
• Processing sales and serving on the till.
• Open and close the shop when necessary to support the Shop Manager.
• Cash up the till at the end of the day.
• Support with sorting donations and price stock, keeping the shop stocked up, clean and tidy.
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives.
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community.
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers.
