Job description

Rosetrees: an amazing challenge for exceptional Trustees

Rosetrees is a private charity created and funded by an entrepreneurial family since 1987. Rosetrees provides seed corn funding for the best new ideas in innovative cutting edge medical research at early or proof of concept stages where other funding is not available. Using this model, Rosetrees has launched and continued to support the careers of some of the best researchers in the UK.

Professor Patrick Maxwell, Regius Professor of Medicine at Cambridge, describes what Rosetrees does as “unique”.

Over 35 years Rosetrees has invested over £50m into the sector. From the work supported by this funding Rosetrees funded researchers have been able to raise over a further £1.1billion to continue their work. An exceptional range of projects is now supported to a very high standard and a leading Vice Chancellor has described the quality of Rosetrees service as having created a brand.

Our Chairman Richard Ross is an accountant with no scientific knowledge and yet says that working with talented exceptional researchers is incredibly interesting and inspiring. So much so that well past retiring age, Richard works for Rosetrees full time.

Ann Berger is the CEO at Rosetrees whose energy and passion is matched by her very capable team which includes 2 PhDs and three scientists. The nearly 3,000 researchers supported over the years in every area of illness, provide expert evaluations which help raise the quality of research funded to new heights every year.

Ann’s team cover the day-to-day work to review hundreds of applications and identify the very best to fund, based on expert external advice. The Trustee Board provides the overview support covering compliance, finance, investment and science.

The Trustee Board would now welcome the contribution from two new Trustees, one to take on the role as Treasurer and the other to overview partnership relationships to jointly fund research. Trustees are asked to be available to attend four Trustee meetings each year, to participate in sub-committee work related to their expertise as well as ad hoc meetings and consultations as required.

The qualities we are looking for in new Trustees (no medical or science knowledge necessary)

·         A passion for making a difference

·         Proven track record of sound judgement, strategic thinking and effective decision making

·         Able to spend time with the Rosetrees team to understand our unique approach

·         Willing to use your expertise to think and help improve the way Rosetrees works

·         Interested in how medical research improves everyone’s health, or even finds cures

·         Able to think constructively and positively out of the box to enhance Rosetrees outcomes.

This is a rare opportunity to make a major contribution to society. If you are interested, please email Ann Berger with a C.V. and a personal statement about why you would like to be a Rosetrees’ Trustee by Fri 26 January 2024.
