About Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers is an independent charity that gives people the power to speak up and stop crime, 100% anonymously. Whoever you are, wherever you live, from communities to companies. By phone and online, 24/7, 365 days a year. They also share advice on how to protect the people and communities you care about from crime, so everyone can feel safe.

Crimestoppers exists because a significant proportion of the population are unable, or simply refuse, to talk to the authorities. However, with Crimestoppers, there is hope. The charitable status remains an essential ingredient as it gives people much needed confidence in their hour of need to trust their unique service. Fear of revenge is a key barrier, alongside deeply ingrained cultural reasons. Keeping silent has a detrimental impact, allowing more criminals to flourish, causing significant damage and harm to society.

The information that Crimestoppers receives is as vital today as it was when Lord Ashcroft established the charity over 32 years ago. It assists police investigations, finds wanted criminals who are on the run and helps families who desperately seek justice.

It’s a team effort: from staff and volunteers, along with their partners including police, Police and Crime Commissioners and businesses. But ultimately, it’s the beneficiaries who are at the centre of everything they do. Thousands of them contact Crimestoppers every day, making a positive choice to do the right thing, often in the most difficult circumstances. This resulted in 2019/20 having well over half a million contacts from the public and over 172,000 reports being sent to the police. This has led to remarkable successes where information has directly led to the solving of murders, the capture of rapists, disruption of serious organised criminal gangs and the safeguarding of those most in need.

Role Description

The Role of the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Crimestoppers, developing its aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the Articles of Association, legal requirements and regulatory guidelines.

It is collectively responsible for promoting the success of the charity by directing and supervising the charity’s affairs. Its role is to provide leadership within a framework of prudent and effective controls which enable risk to be assessed and managed.

The Crimestoppers board has up to 15 trustee positions, including the Chair.

Specifically, the role of a Trustee is to:

  • Attend trustee board and committee meetings 
  • Contribute actively to the board’s work and decision-making 
  • Decide policies affecting Crimestoppers staff and volunteers
  • Oversee Crimestoppers activities, including risk management and management of the charity’s resources 
  • Contribute to setting Crimestoppers strategic direction and priorities 
  • Make sure that Crimestoppers pursues its charitable objectives 
  • Support and encourage volunteers, the executive team and their staff in their roles, whilst constructively challenging their advice and decisions 
  • Represent Crimestoppers internally and externally 

Person specification

You should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of the criteria listed below;

  • A commitment to Crimestoppers aims and objectives, and a proactive interest in and enthusiasm for shaping the future of the organisation
  • Demonstrable experience from a professional or community background with understanding of the beneficiaries of Crimestoppers and why they choose to  report crimes or not
  • We are particularly interested in individuals who bring knowledge and understanding of how crime effects communities, related disadvantage and adversity and the barriers to engaging with authorities
  • A willingness to give your time and effort to prepare for and attend trustee and other relevant meetings
  • Good independent judgement and the ability to challenge ideas constructively 
  • An ability to think creatively and strategically 
  • An understanding and acceptance of legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and the roles of boards 
  • The ability to represent Crimestoppers internally or externally and a willingness to build and use networks on behalf of Crimestoppers
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team while contributing an independent perspective 
  • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to analyse and interpret information 
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion

Time Commitment

Trustees normally commit to around 8 days per year. This includes reading and prep time, and breaks down roughly as: 

  • Attending two board meetings a year (virtual or face to face), and occasional additional meetings. Face to face meetings are held in London. 
  • Attending two sub-committee meetings a year 
  • Attending the AGM once a year 
  • Participating in some of Crimestoppers work, such as sitting on a trustee recruitment panel or attending the two large functions that we hold every year. Ideally, you would allow three or four days a year for this
  • Trustees serve for three years, with the possibility to renew for another three years after their first term

Additional Information

  • The role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration
  • Travel expenses may be claimed 

You must not act as a trustee if you:

  • Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception (such as fraud)
  • Are bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement (e.g. an individual voluntary arrangement) with a creditor
  • Have been removed as a company director or charity trustee because of wrongdoing
  • Have been disqualified from being a company director 
  • Are subject to an order made under section 429(2) of the Insolvency Act 1986 
  • Have previously been removed as a trustee by the Charity Commission, the Scottish charity regulator or the High Court due to misconduct or mismanagement 
  • Have been removed from management or control of anybody under section 34(5)(e) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (or earlier legislation)

In addition, anyone who has previously been barred by the Independent Safeguarding Authority from working with children or vulnerable adults cannot take on a role that would give them access to those people.
