Job description

The Kids Network is a community of children and young professionals connecting through fun, friendship and hardship for positive social change.   We believe every child deserves the right to a happy childhood and a positive future. Our mentors help make that happen.

The Kids Network values fun, diversity, and commitment – this is the culture we want embedded throughout the organisation. If you are passionate about connecting for change and share our vision, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for a new Safeguarding & Advocacy Trustee to support the board on safeguarding matters and advocating for children's voices.  The ideal candidate will have experience of operating at a senior level which links to schools, child participation and/ or advocating for children’s voices.

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that The Kids Network achieves its core purpose. They ensure that the Charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and govern the executive team to enable The Kids Network to grow and thrive, and through this, support children to live the lives that they deserve.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Regularly review safeguarding policies, procedures, and culture at The Kids Network to ensure they keep children and vulnerable adults safe.

  • Proactively ensure The Kids Network is in line with best practice in safeguarding policy and reacts to any changes in charity commission guidance and legislation.

  • Champion safeguarding throughout the organisation, including at board level.

  • Educate and make recommendations to support the other trustees in their responsibilities to keep children and vulnerable adults safe.

  • Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve your organisation’s policies, procedures and practices.

  • Support the Designated Safeguarding Officer and other key staff on specific safeguarding issues, as required.

  • Support with the creation and implementation of an annual safeguarding workplan

  • Ensure the organisation’s risk register reflects safeguarding risks properly and determines which measures should be taken to mitigate risks.

  • Attend all People and Safeguarding Committee meetings

  • Attend relevant safeguarding training events and conferences.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Core Trustee Responsibilities

  • Support and provide advice on TKN’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.

  • Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

  • Oversee TKN’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.

  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.

  • Review and approve TKN’s financial statements.

  • Provide support and challenge to TKN’s CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.

  • Keep abreast of changes in TKN’s operating environment.

  • Contribute to regular reviews of TKN’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

  • Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect TKN’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.

  • Contribute to the broader promotion of TKN’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge, and contacts.

  Terms of appointment

  • This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

  • Trustees should serve a minimum of one term, lasting 2 years

  Time commitment

  • Attending 5 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held remotely

  • Attending 1 offsite strategy day

  • Attend 5 People & Safeguarding Committees annually

  • Ad hoc and occasional support through working groups and / or support to the executive team

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

The Kids Network is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS check.

We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups and candidates who have had lived experiences to apply for this role as we continue to build our culture of inclusion and representation within our organisation.
