Our vision is enabling university students to live God-centred lives, so we teach structured, engaging and transformative face-to-face foundational Islamic education to over 1,800 students across the UK.
Role Summary
Roots Academy is in the process of registering as a charity. As part of this process, the team are working towards creating policies, procedures and frameworks to ensure Roots is meeting charity governance requirements, and to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
The teams currently include:
- Executive team – will become the Trustee Board, once registered
- Leadership team – Team Leads include Finance, HR, Marketing, Fundraising, Academic, Delivery
As our Governance Lead, you will work closely with the Executive Team / Trustee Board, to establish a governance framework for the charity. You will also work closely with the relevant team leads to ensure each team has policies and procedures in place.
Key tasks
- Working closely with the Exec team, support the Trustee on-boarding process, to ensure all required documentation is obtained, and stored securely
- Support with trustee meetings, ensuring accurate record keeping of meeting agendas and minutes
- Manage registers; register of members of the board, register of interests, register of gifts, policy register, risk register, submitting to relevant regulators and responding to appropriate requests.
- Oversee the development of governance polices, such as Complaints Policy, Conflict of Interest Policy, Risk Management Policy, and Whistleblowing Policy.
- Work with the leadership team to ensure policies and procedures are in place, in line with best practice, and signed off by the Trustee board. This includes but is not limited to:
- Finance policies: Anti-Bribery and Corruption, Anti-Money Laundering, Cash Handling, Due Diligence, Expenses, Reserves
- Marketing & communications policies: Data Protection, External Communications & PR Policy, Social Media Policy, IT & Internal Communication Policy
- Fundraising policies: Acceptance & Refusal of Donations Policy, Ethical Fundraising Policy
- Work with the People Team Lead to roll out HR and safeguarding policies and procedures
- Work with the relevant Team Lead to ensure Roots has all relevant insurances is in place – e.g. public liability insurance for fundraising events, travel insurance for trips abroad, employer liability insurance if employees are recruited in the future.
- Advise the board as necessary, keeping up to date with relevant laws and regulations, including but not limited to Charity Commission Regulations and the Fundraising Code of Conduct.

About The English-Speaking Union (ESU)
The English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth is a membership organisation with a charitable purpose. It was founded by the journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench in 1918 and is governed by a Royal Charter, granted by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. The Princess Royal is the President.
The ESU is best known for its extensive work in supporting children and young people to develop speaking and listening (oracy) skills through primary education programmes, public speaking competitions and debate.
The ESU is an international organisation with a network of 54 national ESUs, each operating independently and according to its own jurisdiction. The ESU provides secretariat to the International Council.
The international headquarters of the ESU are at Dartmouth House, one of the most notable properties in Mayfair.
It is Grade II Listed and is scheduled as a building of national importance. The venue is operated under licence by Graysons, who run weddings, private events, corporate activities and service our members.
The ESU also operates a private members’ club at Dartmouth House, where members establish new friendships and networks through its varied events programme.
We plan to refurbish our Grade II listed building in the heart of Mayfair whilst retaining our heritage and maximising our opportunities.
We plan to develop our volunteering strategy and grow our network of volunteers nationally and from within our existing membership and new audiences.
Alongside planning to establish our fundraising capability to grow, diversify and enhance our education and membership offers and establishing our new fundraising strategy.

About the role

Lay members of Council have a vital part to play in the governance of the University and bring knowledge and experience of particular value, given the nature of the environment in which universities work.
Lay Members are expected to play an appropriate part in ensuring that the necessary business of Council is carried on efficiently, effectively, and in a manner appropriate for the proper conduct of public business. You will be expected to make rational and constructive contributions to debate and to make your knowledge and expertise available to Council as opportunities arise.
Members have a responsibility to ensure that the governing body acts in accordance with the instruments of governance of the University and exercises efficient and effective use of the resources of the University to meet its charitable objectives, maintain long-term financial viability, and safeguard its assets.

Members of Council are appointed for three years and membership may be renewed for up to two more terms of three years. It is hoped that Lay Members will serve on one or more of the Council’s sub-committees.
As such, the University is seeking Lay Council Members who can commit up to 16 days per year to this role, which roughly equates to a time commitment of one to two days per month.

As a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) Trustee, you will be one of the legal directors of the company and will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction, governance, and overall success of our partnership. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the education and well-being of young people in the communities that we serve.
The Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (“ATLP”) is a growing multi-academy trust of 21 schools and one teaching school, based in Birmingham, Coventry, North Warwickshire and Staffordshire, with more than 10,000 students and over 1,000 members of staff. All academies are quite distinctive and separate schools, serving different communities and phases: but all either are, or have the capacity to become good and outstanding.
Key Trustee Responsibilities
Governance and Leadership:
- Act as a responsible and active member of the Trust Board, providing leadership and guidance to achieve its strategic objectives.
- Attend Trust Board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and other relevant meetings to contribute to decision-making processes.
- Oversee trust compliance with legal and regulatory requirements governing academies and trusts as a member of the trust’s legally accountable body.

Strategic Planning:
- Contribute to the development of the trust's strategic plan and policies, ensuring alignment with the trust's mission, vision, and values.

Financial Oversight:
- Provide financial oversight by reviewing and approving budgets, financial statements, and expenditure and contributing to long-term strategic planning.

Educational Excellence:
- Support and challenge the executive leadership team to maintain and improve educational standards across the trust both in formal appraisal processes and throughout the year.
- Foster a culture of high expectations and accountability.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders through various formal and informal channels, including parents, teachers, students, and the local community.
- Getting to know schools within the trust, including undertaking planned occasional visits during school hours.
- Act as an ambassador for the trust and promote positive relationships with external partners.
Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate risks to the trust's operations, reputation, and finances.
- Ensure robust safeguarding procedures are in place and adhered to.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A passion for improving outcomes for young people.
- Previous experience in governance, leadership, or strategic roles, preferably within the education sector.
- Strong understanding of the principles of corporate governance, finance, and risk management.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Due to the planned committee memberships across the three roles, recent or specific experience in any of the following areas will be held in high regard;
- Qualification or professional knowledge of accountancy or audit processes.
- Experience in financial forecasting and strategic planning.
- Educational Technology (Ed Tech) knowledge.
- Estates and sustainability knowledge.
- Practical experience of applying risk management and/or internal controls principles.
- Programme or project management experience.

Time Commitment:
The role of a Trustee typically involves attending regular meetings and dedicating time to prepare for those meetings, as well as occasional additional commitments as needed. We expect the time commitment to be one day a month spread across various activities such as preparation of board meetings, reading board papers, ad hoc discussions and conversations with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year.
The schedule of planned meetings for 2023-24 is available and will be shared with shortlisted candidates during the interview process to ascertain capacity/availability to attend the scheduled meetings.

About the role
The Bournemouth & Poole College’s activities are overseen by the Board of the Corporation. It is responsible for agreeing, supporting and scrutinising the delivery of the College’s strategy.
The College Board has 16 members and includes members from the commercial, public, voluntary and education sectors. The Board operates a committee structure model and operates strictly in accordance with the government’s laid down ‘Instrument and Articles of Government’.
The role of the Governor is fundamental to strong and effective governance and is, therefore, key to Bournemouth & Poole College’s continued success. The Governors will bring experience at a strategic or senior level with a real recognition of the difference that education makes to the lives of thousands of people each year.

Our Vision: Through an exceptional Central Foundation education, every student learns, develops, and grows so they can reach their full potential.
Central Foundation Schools of London (CFSL) is a charitable foundation which supports two amazing voluntary aided Schools based in the East End of London – Central Foundation Boys’ School in Islington and the Girls’ School in Tower Hamlets. Between them the two schools support over 2,500 young people from highly diverse communities and backgrounds.
The Foundation has just completed a major building redevelopment project with the Boys' School and is about to start a programme to extend the Sixth Form facilities and provision at the Girls' School. Beyond that the Foundation has just embarked on its first 3-year strategy which aims to leverage our skills, funding and influence to collaborate with our schools to strengthen their education provision and outcomes.
The Foundation are seeking four new Board members to serve for an initial term of four years. We are particularly keen to appoint:
- Two new trustees with experience of leadership the secondary education sector and/or a strong understanding of education policy and the wider education context in which our schools are working.
- A further Board member with a strong background in finance who would also serve as a member of our Finance & Audit or Investment Committee, or possibly both.
- A new trustee with a keen interest in creating opportunities for young people potentially through experience in careers development, corporate partnerships, fundraising or income generation.
The Foundation Board meets in person quarterly and has an annual away day. As well as being members of the Board, trustees are asked to join one of the sub-committees or project groups - these meetings are usually hybrid with one in-person meeting each year.

Trustee Role Description
EqualiTeach’s trustees are responsible for the charity’s vision, mission, strategic direction and governance. They are bound to ensure that the charity complies with all legal and statutory requirements and that its assets and resources are properly secured and deployed in pursuit of its charitable objectives. They support and challenge the executive team to enable EqualiTeach to grow and thrive and through this achieve its mission of an equal, inclusive and diverse society where everyone is valued and able to succeed.
What We are Looking for in New Trustees
We are looking for trustees who will help us to continue to grow the charity’s impact and profile. Applicants should be driven by a desire to support an organisation at the forefront of providing exceptional equality, diversity and inclusion training and consultancy. We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
We are particularly looking for trustees who have some leadership experience or experience of leading in the charity sector. Ideally, applicants would also have knowledge and skills in one of the following areas: promotions and marketing, fundraising and HR. If you are unsure as to whether your skills and experience are what we are looking for, we would be happy to have a conversation prior to application. Previous Board experience is not necessary as there will be a full induction process and further training and support.
It is important that our Board reflects the diversity of our society, and we know that increasing diversity will help us to achieve greater success. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people from the LGBTQIA+ community, who are currently underrepresented on the Board.
Trustee Duties
- Support and provide advice of EqualiTeach’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Guide and approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee and approve EqualiTeach’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Provide support and challenge to EqualiTeach’s CEOs in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in EqualiTeach’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of EqualiTeach’s governance.
- Attend board meetings and adequately prepare to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect EqualiTeach’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of EqualiTeach’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
As a small charity, trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, providing advice on new initiatives, providing support with ad hoc requests, supporting staff recruitment, disciplinaries and complaints, representing EqualiTeach at meetings and conferences or any other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Terms of Appointment
Terms of Office
- Trustees are appointed for a term of up to three years and can be reappointed up to three times.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time Commitment
- Boarding meetings are quarterly. Trustees are expected to attend at least 75% of meetings, including the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are currently held in person at Suite 11, Davey House, 31a St Neots Road, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, PE19 7BA. Trustees may also be part of sub-groups which will meet independently of the main board meetings. These meetings will be a combination of online and face-to-face meetings.
- In addition, trustees are expected to devote on average two hours per week to the role. This may involve scrutinising board papers, providing advice on new initiatives, providing support with ad hoc requests, supporting staff recruitment, disciplinaries and complaints, representing EqualiTeach at meetings and conferences or any other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
